My definition of educational
technology
My definition of educational
technologyIn my opinion, technology is a
mode of inquiry used in the search for new knowledge. Under this definition, technology does not have to be “high tech”, rather
technology is any tool that helps satisfy a need through
construction, production and testing of artifacts, systems, and
techniques.

We had a felt board to tell stories in class.
I don’t remember even knowing there
was such a thing as a computer.
In fact, I don’t remember having a TV until 2nd grade, but I do think it was
in color.

In middle school, people had Texas Instrument and Atari games. There was also “speak n math or spell”.
In high school, we had an Apple II that my step dad bought from his friend who had upgraded it to an Apple II E. My mom took a college class and made a picture of a roadrunner using code. I wrote code to make the cursor draw a square. You also had to press the escape button before the key to make a capitol letter.
I school, I made the year book using real photos and an enormous half-toning machine. We actually cut pictures for the layout.
Slide shows of pictures played to music were really high tech, and we spent hours creating them!
Ps. Just say “mix tape”!

I bought my first real computer my freshman year in college, along with the book “The Mac is Not a Typwriter”. We used “real” floppies… and then new floppies.
I did statistics by entering code. Learning EXCEL and powerpoint was huge. Then, WWW started marketing, even at Safeway.
I really learned to type in the later half of college because email became popular, and I was trying to communicate with prospective graduate school advisors (1998).
By grad school in 1999 (UH), I had an IBM Thinkpad and zip drives. The school computer room had scanners and laser printers. People still used overheads as backups for slide projectors at conferences. Powerpoint was a tool to make slides for the slide projector (at the photo store).

A vivid technology
learning experience
A vivid technology
learning experienceIn “Back to The Future” there was a radio that was
“small”. I remember my step dad telling me after the movie that the country’s most forward envisioning think-tank members were not able to get close to the current rate of technology growth. I’ve always remembered that; we are progressing faster than we can even imagine in our wildest dreams. Now I use an ishuffle when I paddleboard in the ocean, and it is so small it fits in my ponytail. It also has a memory 4x larger than the hard-drive of the computer I began graduate school with, less than 10 years ago.

A technology I want to use in my
classroom
A technology I want to use in my
classroomI would like some “regular
technology” in my classroom - like microscopes that connect
to a computer and an LCD projector dedicated to my
room. A smartboard, a printer and classroom computers
would also be great. I’d love to have these things on
demand, but right now I can check out a lot of technology, it’s just not as immediate as I
would like.
I’d also love to use more online technology like Google Earth as well as online blog
sites and classroom networking that is safe and
educational.

My vision of the classroom
of the future
My vision of the classroom
of the futureA classroom without
borders … and a world to explore.
In my classroom of the future, we are connected
but also independent explorers.
We share knowledge and feel empowered.

A challenge for teaching
A challenge for teaching
The challenges for teaching with technology are that:
1. It takes a lot of time (especially because it doesn’t always work).
2. It can be very expensive.
3. It is always
changing.
