AUGUST 11, 2019 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Décimo Noveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Últimamente he estado pensando mucho acerca del tráfico humano.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I’ve been thinking a lot about human trafficking la-tely. It’s horrible to think that human beings are being held in bondage all around us. We don’t see them because they are hidden on farms, in factories, hotels, sweatshops, restaurants, mines, and, in some terrible circumstances, armies. That’s why, in the letter to the Hebrews today, the part about Abram setting out in faith for an unknown land sent me back to the original story in the twelfth chapter of Genesis. And there it was, just as I remembered. Abram, in obedience to this unknown God, “took his wife Sarai, his brother’s son Lot… and the persons they had acquired, and set out for the land of Canaan (12:5). So, the original sin of our parents in the faith is that they, utterly in tune with their times and to the shock of no one, acquired human beings, and they brought those human beings (never named) across the border of Syria/Turkey into what is today Israel. Another compelling story of human trafficking is also associated with these same two characters. Having sojourned into Egypt because of famine, they came home with an Egyptian “maid servant” named Ha-gar. It was this woman who was forced to become Abraham’s concubine and bear him a son. Both mot-her and child were dismissed, though, when Sarah bore a son of her own. Is it fair to project modern sensibilities onto ancient biblical characters? Of course not. Who of us hasn’t grown in consciousness of cultural sins that were accepted just years ago? But oh, we can shine a light on those sins when we see them in our own towns, in our own times. In what ways are you educating yourself about hu-man trafficking in your city?

Questions of the Week First Reading How is your faith in the Lord a source of courage for you in troubled times? Second Reading The author of Hebrews defines faith as "the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen" and holds up Abraham as a model of faith. Who would you see as a model of faith in your faith community? Gospel Reading Jesus warned Peter of the responsibilities entrusted to followers of Christ. How well do you think you are stewarding the gifts God has given you?

GOSPEL Tickets booked, packing list double-checked, itinerary set - how do you know you're prepared for a trip? Being ready requires plenty of practical preparation. Do we give the same care to our spiritual preparedness? "Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom," Jesus tells us. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus reminds us to have the right attitude for the gifts and callings he wants to give us! Clear out your clutter! "Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." Jesus reminds the disciples that earthly standards of security and success will wear out in time. If our lives are struc-tured around values that don't align with the kingdom of God, we'll miss opportunities to receive God. If we're so concerned with our child's success in sports that we miss Sunday Mass for their tournaments, we're missing out receiving the sacraments and building a consistent community of faith. If our quest for the promotion takes us away from family commitments, we won't be able to fully receive the love intended in our closest relationships. Set faith-based priorities. "Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival." Our conflicting commitments can cause any routine to slip from time to time. All the more rea-son to make sure faith is a priority. Pray as a family before meals. Bring your children regularly to the sacrament of confession. Make room in the schedule for faith enrichment activities offered by your parish. Volunteer once a month. "At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." When will the call come to care for an ailing parent? To take on a new leadership position? God speaks to us through the circumstances of our lives. He calls each of us to greater love, sometimes in very concrete ways. This week, take some time to consider: Will you be ready?

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 Sundays before the 9 am Mass

AROUND THE COMMUNITY AUGUST 11, 2019

Schedule of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Com-munion, Lectors, and Sacristans

August 17-18, 2019

LIVE THE LITURGY We are asked to be vigilant until our Master returns. Even though our faith tells us that Christ will come again and that our purpose and destiny is an eternal one, it is hard not to lose heart, grow weary, and become distracted. Remembering the stories of our faith and what God has done throughout history is one way of remaining fresh and focused. Celebrating, re-calling, and making real and tangible again what God has done is what our community does liturgically each time we gather. As the author of Hebrews reminds us: Faith makes real what we hope for and is the evidence of things we cannot see. Let us take this time once again to remember and participate in what God has done and continues to do.

We are looking for volunteers! Lending a hand is a rewarding expe-rience! There are many things YOU can do for our conference in helping the poor families in our neighborhoods.
