HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION 2022In addition to Sunday, the days to be observed as Holy days of Obligation for the Dioceses of the United States of America are six. However, in the Province of Chicago, The Ascension of the Lord, Solemnity, has been permanently transferred to the following Sunday. The remaining Holy days are:

January 1: The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God* *Not obligatory for the 2022 year.

August 15: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, SolemnityNovember 1: All Saints, SolemnityDecember 8: The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

SolemnityDecember 25: The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), Solemnity

The problem of suffering is the ultimate Gordian knot, the ultimate insoluble problem, that finally ends in mystery. Why do we suffer? Or, to put the question most acutely, why do the innocent suffer? No answer seems all that adequate to the question. The various traditions and schools of philosophy give us answers that bring only partial consolation. If the cause of suffering is our desires (Hinduism), or if it springs from the disturbance of our passions (Stoicism), or if it comes from our lack self-knowledge (the Greeks), if we suffer in punishment for our sins (Judaism), then still the question remains-- why do the innocent, who in one case or another are free of illusion, passion and sin, suffer? If suffering is simply absurd (Existentialism), again there is no adequate answer to the question.

The person of Christ provides us with the greatest clarification by opening up a whole new dimension of the problem. Above all humanity, Christ is innocent, sinless, undeserving of punishment and suffering. And yet he suffers according to the will of the Father. Thus the reason for Christ's suffering is revealed as atonement and redemption, expressing God's forgiveness and salvific love. It is also something that can perfect us and unite us via participation in fellowship with Christ. St. Paul says" 'we rejoice in our sufferings," and he goes on to spell out the sequence of spiritual steps that lead to hope "knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope" (Rom 5.3-4). That is, suffering perfects us and in perfecting us brings us hope of salvation. He adds in 2 Cor. 1:5-7: "For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too…… Our hope for you is unshaken; for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort."

In the figure of Christ and in his transfiguration, we have a hint of the ultimate answer. Suffering can transform us. In the old Anglo-Saxon poem of the ninth century, "The Dream of the Rood," the Cross (or Rood) explains its history, which begins in disgrace as it is cut down and then brought to the place of crucifixion, where Christ embraces the cross, which suffers with him. Beginning as a mere tree, proceeding through the disgrace of the passion and crucifixion, the tree ends up being an object of veneration adorned with jewels at the points where Christ's hands and feet were nailed. With profound theological insight, the author then calls the rood the "glory-tree." Just as Christ is transfigured, so the tree joined to him in suffering is finally glorified.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORDFocus: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

Today’s feast celebrates the revelation of the Messiah to those outside the Jewish covenant. The three Magi were among the first to recognize Jesus as King, and Tradition holds that their encounter transformed them from outsiders (Gentiles) to faithful believers who proclaimed this Good News. God desires salvation for the whole world, and we are commissioned by our baptism to bring others to encounter Christ, so that they, too, might be transformed.Isaiah prophesies a time when Jerusalem is radiant with God’s glory and people from afar will come to bask in the light of the Lord. Paul writes that Gentiles are coheirs in the promise in Christ Jesus. In the Gospel, the Magi inquire about the newborn Jewish king. Feeling threatened, Herod asks about the child’s whereabouts. The Magi follow the star and pay homage to the child in Bethlehem.

PART ONE - THE PROFESSION OF FAITHSECTION TWO – THE CREEDS

I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHERTHE HOLY TRINITY IN THE TEACHING OF THE FAITHTHE FORMATION OF THE TRINITARIAN DOGMA256. St. Gregory of Nazianzus, also called "the Theologian", entrusts this summary of Trinitarian faith to the catechumens of Constantinople:Above all guard for me this great deposit of faith for which I live and fight, which I want to take with me as a companion, and which makes me bear all evils and despise all pleasures: I mean the profession of faith in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. I entrust it to you today. By it I am soon going to plunge you into water and raise you up from it. I give it to you as the companion and patron of your whole life. I give you but one divinity and power, existing one in three, and containing the three in a distinct way. Divinity without disparity of substance or nature, without superior degree that raises up or inferior degree that casts down. . . the infinite co-naturality of three infinites. Each person considered in himself is entirely God. . . the three considered together. . . I have not even begun to think of unity when the Trinity bathes me in its splendour. I have not even begun to think of the Trinity when unity grasps me.92

TRAVELING MARY IS BACK!!What is it??The traveling Mary, Our Lady of Grace statue is a tool to encourage families to come together to pray for vocations and to encourage young people to be open to the priesthood or religious life. The aim of the traveling Mary statue is to help the parish families become more aware of the need for vocations and of the possibility that God may be calling a member of their family to serve the Church in this way. Vocations become a normal conversation topic in the household, and individuals are able to learn more about the beauty of vocations. How it WorksFamilies sign up to host Mary, Our Lady of Grace statue for one week (Sunday – Friday), gathering around the statue daily and using the Lanterian Prayer booklet to pray for vocations along with any other prayers of their choosing. The family will be invited forward to pick up the statue after the announcements, just before the final blessing. They will then return the statue to the parish office on the following wFriday so it can be passed along to another family within the Sunday masses. If the parish office is closed, please drop the statue off at the rectory. Families who hosted the statue do not have to be present at the mass where the statue is passed on to another family. Please call the parish office at (618) 465-4284 to schedule a time for your family to spend with Mary.
