We have Free U.S. Citizenship Study classes in Carson City, Douglas
and Washoe Counties. Students also receive help with applications
if necessary. The fee to become a citizen is $680. 00. Obviously,
many of these people do not have the full fee even though working
2-3 jobs. We have 51 students ready to take the citizenship exam
but do not have savings for the full fee. If there is a community
foundation member or individuals who would consider providing
some financial assistance to these students, in the form of a grant
or a loan, please contact Florence Phillips 775-888-2021.

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada currently has 89 tutors who are 55-88 years of age. They tutor 205 stu-dents in all levels of ESL, Workplace Communication, GED preparation, Practice English Conversation, Computer Literacy and U.S. Citizenship Study. A few Testimonials: From Tutors: “I now have a purpose….” “Since retirement, my volunteerism keeps me young and vibrant…”; “I love helping a single mother with ESL so she helps her child with school homework”; “My experience with this pro-gram has been a remarkable journey. I see the eyes of my students with a feeling of gratitude and pride as they progress”; “The opportunity to teach ESL is the gift that keeps on giving! I am forever grateful”; “I’ve learned so much from the people I am help-ing”; “While my student is handicapped physically and visually, he is making good progress. I know he is happy to have the chance to read with a tutor each time I come. He expresses his appreciation at every session“; “I'm thankful to be a part of an organization that is making a difference in so many lives, bringing the joy of accomplishment to many who would not otherwise experience it”; “My student who understood a little English when she started is now shopping alone at Walmart and Marshalls. She also orders for herself at restaurants.” A few Testimonials From students: “My tutor played a huge role in helping me pass the GED and helped me to be able to score in the top 10% of Nevada. I am very thankful for the help I got from the ESL In-Home Program.” “I now feel comfortable when I speak with a person and I understand more.” “My life has changed tremendously now that I can speak, read, write.” “I NOW UNDERSTAND THE CLERKS IN English-speaking stores and they understand me!!” “I can now read stories in English to my school children”. “I was able to help a friend so she could understand her bosses requests.” “I can now read my children’s teach-er’s letters that she brings home.” “Attending the GED class helped me find a job”. “I as an advanced student can now give back to the program by helping another beginner.”
Volunteering improves quality of life
According to a report in the October issue of AARP Magazine, only 28 percent of people who donated their time at a school, hospital, or other nonprofit organization or participated in a club or social group in the past 12 months reported they were lonely. This compares with 41 percent loneliness for those
who do not volunteer or belong to a social group. Volunteering and working with others for a common cause deepens relationships and increases a sense of belonging and satisfaction with life and self.

Experts say volunteering—and the connec-

depression, fewer hospital stays, and more
preventive health care. It’s also good for
