Adams County destinationsNECEDAH NATIONALWILDLIFE REFUGEThe Refuge features sedge meadow, savanna, prairie, and pine-oak forest habitats. The Ref-uge is home to dragonflies, whooping cranes, trumpeter swans, wolves, Karner blue but-terflies, badgers, and red-headed woodpeckers. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge has one ofthe largest savanna restorations taking place in Wisconsin. These efforts have provided habi-tat for more than 110 species of migratory birds, three species of amphibians, 14 types ofreptiles, and more than 44 species of butterflies.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING TRAILSThe Van Kuren Trail in Monroe Center, Lake Arrowhead in the Town of Rome and Roche-A-CriState Park north of friendship feature groomed and marked cross-country ski trails. LakeArrowhead’s trails follow the Pines Golf Course for a unique view of the links. Both CastleRock County Park on Highway Z in Quincy and Petenwell County Park on Bighorn Drive inMonroe Center feature ungroomed trails. Petenwell has 15 miles of trails and Van Kuren hasalmost three.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILSAdams County boasts more than 230 miles of state-funded/county-sponsored snowmobiletrails that are maintained by local snowmobile clubs. Many of the trails afford views of placesdiffi cult to reach or inaccessible during the rest of the year. FISHINGAshland County is known for world-class smallmouth bass fishing and offers four-season fishing fora variety of species, including trout, salmon, walleye, bass, northern pike and panfish. There aregreat fishing hot spots among the islands in Lake Superior near Ashland. The scenic Sand Cut andLong Island are a must see for any visitor.

WATERFALLSCopper Falls State Park is in Ashland County. There are numerous hiking trails that meanderthrough the park with observation points overlooking canyons, streams and waterfalls. MorganFalls is located about 13 miles west of Mellen and 6 miles south of Sanborn in the Penokee Range.At the south fork of Morgan Creek, a stream of water cascades 70 feet down the face of a rock cliffto a small pool.

Iron CountydestinationsMECCA TRAILSThe MECCA Cross-CountrySki Trails are located in thetown of Mercer. There areapproximately 18 km oftrails groomed for classicand/or skate skiing. Trailsare groomed by volun-teers, as conditions allow.Hiking, snowshoeing, anddogs are allowed only onthe untracked portions ofthe trails. The trails arealso open for hiking andmountain biking in theautumn. The daily trail-use donation suggestionsare $8 per adult, $5 perchild, $1 per dog, or $20for however many peopleyou have in your car.

WHITECAPMOUNTAINSJust west of Hurley, thisskiing complex features 43runs of a variety of skilllevels, from expert tobeginner.

SNOWMOBILETRAILSIron County offers over500 miles of groomedtrails, and 175,000 acres ofoff-trail boondocking. These trails arevery scenic, and traverse through aNorway Pine Plantation, uplandhardwood and cedar swamps alongthe Gartzke Flowage. Parking area,restrooms, warming shelter with firewood and tables. From Antigo,travel east on Highway F. Once pastthe Highway S intersection, con-tinue east on Fifth Avenue Road fortwo more miles.

ICE AGE TRAILDust off your hiking boots andhead to Langlade County. Boasting50 miles of the thousand-mile IceAge Trail you can get a taste for theTrail on any of five segments thatrun through the county.

KETTLEBOWL SKI HILLKettlebowl Ski Hill is a volunteer-run, community ski hill. It has sever-al rope tows, and great skiing forlittle kids to young teens, and evenolder folks. The vertical drop is onlyabout 200 feet and is not toocrowded, so you can ski all day. It’sa short ride out from Antigo. Thereare indoor bathrooms in a nice newchalet, lots of good food and hotdog variety, and lots of great fam-ilies hanging out and enjoyingwinter. Kettlebowl also includes 4.3miles of groomed cross-country skitrails, and is part of the 13-mile IceAge Hiking Trail. From Antigo,travel north on Highway 45 toHighway I. Then, go east on High-way I to Highway 52 for approxi-mately eight miles.

NOV. 2, 3:DIRTY DOG DRYLAND RACE, 9 A.M.,MA-KA-JA-WAN BOY SCOUTRESERVATION, PICKEREL. Experiencethe excitement of sled dog racingwithout the snow! HELENE’S HILLTOP ORCHARDSouthwest of Merrill, the orchard offers freshapples, pumpkins and baked goods. Once a dairyfarm, the orchard has grown to 20 acres of appletrees, 10 acres of pumpkins and features a cornmaze, bakery and barnyard play area. BIRDWATCHINGThe George W. Mead State Wildlife Area north of Wisconsin Rapids on Highway S,offers 28,500 acres and more than 70 miles of hiking trails. POWERS BLUFF PARKThis park in Arpin is home to many winter sports including downhill skiing,snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tubing.
