Did you ever watch the Polar Express movie? It’s all about believing, and so is this edition of your ERIE Magazine. The movie is the animated story of a young boy on Christmas Eve who boards a magical train that’s headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus’s home. What unfolds is a doubting boy embarking on a journey of self-discovery which shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

This magazine is about people who believe in Erie, and like the train on the cover move steadily forward with perseverance, and are rarely idle.

The symbolism is even greater for me because of a recent visit to Erie by John Rice, Vice Chairman of GE, who headed GE Transportation here from 1997 to 2000. He graciously agreed to visit with about 100 of our community leaders during his visit.

Shortly after his visit, GE’s Board of Directors named John to lead the company’s global operations, with particular emphasis on high-growth markets such as China, India, the Middle East and Brazil.

His message to us was clear. GE believes in Erie. They’ve been here for more than 100 years. But believing in Erie has to be coupled with the need for flexibility to meet the challenges and competitors in the world today.

In the movie, the boy asks: Is everything all right? What do we do? The conductor replies: Well, considering that we have lost communication with the engineer, and are standing totally exposed on the front of the locomotive, and the train seems to be accelerating, uncontrollably, not to mention that we are headed to Glacier Gulch, which just happens to be the steepest downhill grade in the world, I suggest we all hold on...TIGHTLY!

That’s what GE and all of us face. John Rice said GE sustains its world-class position because “we run scared. There is always a constructive dissatisfaction.”

And it’s not about having the lowest costs. “Competency trumps cost,” was his message. But it was also that we all have to recognize that a willingness to be flexible and work together to look forward and not backwards will help GE and others stay and grow here.

“If you wake up every morning worrying only about protecting what you have you will lose out on the future,” John Rice told his Erie audience.

In the movie, the conductor says: The thing about trains... it doesn’t matter where they’re going. What matters is deciding to get on.

The line from the movie suggests a certain leap of faith moment. Brian Scott and the folks in the Flagship Niagara League know all about that. As Brian related to the 300 people at our recent

Annual Meeting, planning for the 2010 Tall Ships Erie Festival required a leap of faith and a belief in Erie.

The Niagara could have sailed to another port and made about $30,000 instead of staying home to host a tall ships event with no guarantee of financial success. But Erie believers stepped up with all kinds of support. The crowds came. And the net proceeds of $220,000 exceeded all expectations and will enable much-needed maintenance for the Niagara.

“Sometimes the most real things in this world are the things we can’t see,” said the conductor on the Polar Express.

Your ERIE Magazine features six people from different walks of life who have one common trait: Each of them believes passionately in Erie.

They include Bob Mazza of Mazza Vineyards, Mary Bula of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, Raychel Adiutori of Linear, LLC, Jim Martin of Highmark, Mary Beth Wilcher of the Erie Federal Credit Union and Scott McCain of Erie Concrete & Steel. These folks are true believers.

As are all 13 staff members of your Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership. You’re right. That’s our job. But, believing also means never giving up. So whether it’s working to take Erie’s story to the rest of the world or working to establish a community college for our region, this organization thrives on looking to the future. Because we believe in Erie.

At the end of the Polar Express movie, we hear the voice of the boy—who has now grown into a man—say that all of his friends could not hear the sound of Santa’s sleigh bell any longer. But, although he had grown old, he could still hear the bell—along with everyone who believes.

Some people no doubt have stopped believing in Erie. But like John Rice, Brian Scott, the six people featured in this magazine, your Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership staff and thousands of others, you can decide to keep believing if you want.

My personal wish for each of you during this magical season is for purposeful impatience, occasional leaps of faith, perseverance, flexibility, and all the other traits that could help you continue to…..

Believe in Erie.

Local Winemaker Brings Italian Heritage to Shores of Lake ErieBy Erika Howland

From Italy, to Long Island, to Erie, PA? That’s the journey that Bob Mazza and his family took before arriving here in the early 1960’s. It was during a time when there was limited winery action in many parts of the country, yet so much possibility for those passionate about wine. “Being Italian, and born in Italy, wine was very much a part of my upbringing,” Mazza says. “So as you can imagine the Lake Erie region and all of the thousands of acres of vineyards make this a place that was so close to home.”

Mazza began harvesting grapes as a teenager, and following graduation from Gannon University, he and his brother Frank opened Mazza Vineyards in 1974. They produced 25,000 gallons of wine during their first harvest. “We were the seventh winery to be licensed in Pennsylvania,” Mazza explains. “And if it’s any indication of how the business how grown, there are now over 150 wineries just in our state alone.”

Over the years, Mazza has been able to expand his business in the Erie area, opening a store on West 8th Street in Erie, as well as opening another winery in New York State. Additionally, Mazza purchased and now operates the old South Shore Winery located in North East. Being right on Lake Erie has been the biggest asset in helping to move his business forward. “I like water. I don’t like being inland, says Mazza. “It’s refreshing to see the horizon each morning, not to mention the water is very important to the macro climate. It helps to grow better grapes. Wineries and vineyards thrive along the water and it has certainly helped us.” It’s all the more reason Mazza believes in the Erie region to help grow his passion.

But water isn’t the only thing that Mazza is crediting for a thriving business and a desire to stay in the Erie region. He says the community support he and his competitors have received makes it easy to believe in Erie. “Networking opportunities are really key. The Chamber helps provide some of those opportunities where you can meet other business people that are movers and shakers and those are people that make things happen. It’s a matter of building relationships that builds your business.”

Mazza says it is a comfort to people who visit our region or dine out and order a bottle of wine and can say they know the wine maker, or they have visited the winery. In addition, he feels the Erie region is full of opportunity for community involvement and that’s where all business owners get a sense of not just promoting themselves, but promoting the region as a whole.

With the holiday season approaching, Mazza isn’t looking for a particular gift to be left under the Christmas tree. Instead, he’s hoping his belief in Erie becomes contagious with fellow business leaders and community members following in his spirit of cooperation and promotion of our region as a whole. “Erie has a lot going for it,” Mazza comments. “The ability of a small business to have some success but also some succession is a gift. My son and my daughter have come back to Erie to work in our family business and that says a lot about being able to keep young educated people here in our region.”

“It’s refreshing to see the horizon each morning.”

Commitment to positive change gives community leader appreciation for the place she calls home By Jennifer Duda

Every day, Mary Bula sees the great potential that lies right here in the Erie region. As vice president of the ERCGP’s Growth Partnership division, bettering the community in which she lives and works is part of her job. But it’s also Bula’s personal passion, after falling in love with the place she’s called home for more than 13 years.

“I believe so strongly in Erie, and I really enjoy working on initiatives that can make a positive difference here,” she says. “I’ve made some very dear friends here, most of my family is close, and I love my job and my coworkers. There’s really not much more I could hope for in a hometown.”

A Titusville native who earned her bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College and master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Bula has worked in Erie since 1990 when she accepted her first job as supervisor of a local group home for girls. She subsequently became director of research at the Pennsylvania Economy League – Northwest Division (PEL), and after 10 years at PEL, she took a position at the Center for eBusiness and Advanced IT (eBizITPA) as an outreach specialist.

In 2006 she made the move to the Erie Regional Chamber & Growth Partnership, which works to advance strategic community initiatives that will make a long term impact on the region’s economic vitality.

“Virtually everything we do has the goal of making our community a better place,” she says. “One of the things that has been so striking to me is the unwavering commitment that Growth Partnership members have to this community. It is because of them that my job is so exciting and personally rewarding.”

In addition to her role as vice president of the Growth Partnership, Bula serves on the Management Committee of Vital Signs,

a collaboration of The Erie Community Foundation, The Nonprofit Partnership, United Way of Erie County and the ERCGP to identify community-wide key indicators and monitor community progress for the next decade.

Bula believes it is initiatives like this, community college planning efforts, and other Growth Partnership projects that are promising opportunities for economic growth in our region. She also believes that private sector involvement in community initiatives is key to our region’s future.

“Over the last couple of years, I watched more than 50 business and community leaders donate thousands of hours and their expertise to define the region’s education and training needs and envision a fiscally sound local

community college to meet them,” she says. “Their commitment, and the efforts of dozens of others who spoke publicly on behalf of the initiative, was both inspirational and motivating, and made me proud to live, work, and believe in Erie.”

This strong commitment that business and community leaders have toward positive change and the quality of living that the Erie region already provides is what Bula appreciates most about the Erie region.

“There are so many things I treasure about living and working here. I love that we have so many amenities: Presque Isle; arts and sporting events; a great nightlife. I love that there are so many things to do in the summer that there’s just not enough time to do it all. And I love that with every change of seasons there are new, exciting things to do,” she says.

“I also really value that Erie natives have a strong sense of tradition and connection, and that I get to experience that—and be part of it now—even though I didn’t grow up here,” she continues. “And I appreciate that as a hard-working single mom, I can make a nice life for my

14-year-old son, Tristan, because Erie’s cost of living is so reasonable. Erie is a great place to raise a family, and I love my job. Simply put, Erie is home, and that’s what keeps me here.”

Bula is looking forward to spending the holidays here in Erie with her family, and also plans to travel down to Titusville to visit friends.

“Christmas is one of my favorite times of year, and I enjoy being in Erie because our snow makes the holiday season feel even more magical to me,” she says.

Besides a white Christmas, what’s at the top of Bula’s wish list this year?

“Without question, it would have to be health and happiness for my family and friends, she says. “There’s nothing more important to me than that.”

“There’s really not much more I could hope for in a hometown.”[ [

Staying Put, But Not StoppingBy Erika Howland

“Everything has worked out for the best,” says Raychel Adiutori, Partner and COO of Linear, LLC. In 2009 Adiutori, a former news anchor for WSEE-TV, and her partner Sean Morphy found themselves out of work, somewhat abruptly, but not unprepared. “We knew the stations were consolidating but we thought we were part of the move, she says. “There was talk, but we really had no idea until the very last day and then all of a sudden we were told it was done. That’s it.”

Adiutori says in the days before being let go, she and Morphy discussed their options. With so much talent between both of them, it seemed the possibilities were endless. And while they hashed out the details of what to do next, they knew one thing for sure: They were going to do it in Erie because they believed in their community. “We have family here,” Adiutori says. “My husband has a business here and his parents have a business here, so it would’ve been difficult to just pick up and move.”

Going on what they already knew, Adiutori and Morphy decided to start their own company, Linear, LLC. “I wanted to challenge myself,” Adiutori says. “I never had to think before about what else I would do, but when Sean and I saw the need for a new style of video production, we decided to take the skills we have and start the business from basically nothing.”

The duo started with mostly commercials, but evolved quickly into an agency role doing everything from testimonials, to training videos for local businesses small and large. “I realized that I didn’t have to keep

doing what I was always doing,” Adiutori explains. “I had other skills to showcase. I wanted to show I was resilient.” But with any career change comes challenge. Fortunately Adiutori says the Erie community has been very receptive to the transition and the company’s ideas. “I think with

having such a public career change, people in a sense wanted to help us. It did help us to start up quickly being able to work with people that were our contacts for so many years.”

With additional help from community resources like the Gannon Small Business Development Center, Adiutori says it was the extra jump they needed to get a handle on the business side of things and really help Linear, LLC to take off and believe they could succeed. “It’s not easy to start a business, especially in this economy, she says. “I had to learn all about accounting and payroll and other day to day operations. It was

definitely a learning curve, but with help and belief, we’ve come a long way.”

Adiutori says her company’s com-petitors have been welcoming with

positive feedback and insight. “Erie is just the right size. People really do want you to stay here and grow and are always willing to help. It

reaffirms we made the right decision and continue to believe in doing business here.”

In the spirit of the holiday season, Adiutori says she and Morphy have already been given so much, and they are really just giving thanks for their clients and the business. But, in case Santa is reading this they could use a few things. “Obviously our biggest wish is the continued success of our business and the health of our family and friends. But a fancy new computer and some other new fancy computer stuff sure would be nice to find under the tree Christmas morning.”

Reasons to Believe: Highmark’s Jim Martin shares why he puts so much stock in Erie By Amanda Prischak

After regular visits to the 11 counties north of I-80 that comprise his territory as well as weekly trips to Pittsburgh, Highmark Community Affairs Director Jim Martin is always grateful to cross into the Erie County border again. And that’s because he has many reasons for loving the town in which he, his wife, Cheryl, and his daughters, Casey and Molly, live.

For starters, he names Erie’s many opportunities to be healthy and to promote wellness such as walking, biking, fishing, boating, golfing, and star gazing.

Ask Martin about the specific places around town that he most enjoys and you’ll get a variety of entertainment, cultural and sport venues, as well as the many entertaining festivals that happen throughout the year. He also loves dining out, naming the Erie Club as his top pick for a meal away from home. If Martin has any reservations about what to do in his leisure hours, it’s this: “There are too many things to do during my free time!”

As easy as it is for him to name local spots he loves, he is just as adept at describing something more intangible that makes him believe in Erie: its people. “Erieites possess ingenuity, resilience, creativity, vitality,” he enthuses.

Martin is grateful that his work at Highmark is positioned to invest in Erie through extending corporate sponsorships and grants. He’s also thankful to give back by spearheading

volunteer opportunities like the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community that has raised more than $300,000 for local nonprofits and free community health and

dental screenings. “Highmark’s vision and my mission and personal goals line up nicely,” he says. “I know that I am in a special role.”

“Volunteering is a health tonic for the soul,” he says. “Being involved in one’s community is an exciting, growing, and enjoyable experience.”

His community commitments extend well beyond the workday, with Martin serving on various boards in the community. And, knowing that every hand counts, he chairs

“Volunteering is a health tonic

for the soul.”

the cabinet for the United Way’s annual campaign push. Several years ago, he also established the Erie Sports Hall of Fame.

Another organization to which Martin devotes his time is the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership. As a past committee chair, an Erie Ambassador, and a current board member, he sees firsthand how the organization benefits businesses like Highmark, a diamond investor in the ERCGP.

He credits the sort of work done by the ERCGP as the kind that fuels his strong belief in Erie. “We have all the right ingredients to continue to grow and to be known as a progressive and inclusive region,” he says.

“Erie people are addressing and acting on issues—we’re not waiting for someone else to move us forward.” He names the Erie Together initiative, the Erie International Airport expansion, Tap Into Erie, the Inland Port Project, institutions of higher education, an increasing expertise in advanced technology, and a growing popularity as a vacation destination as recent positive developments.

For someone so passionate about Erie, Jim nonetheless has two holiday wishes this year. One of which he’d like to see more…and one of which he’d like to see less. “I love to cross country ski (though not in my car), but there are some days when I only want to see snow on a postcard,” he says with a laugh. As for his second wish, he’d like “for more people to smile because, like it or not, smiling is a mood booster.” He explains that his wish has scientific underpinnings: “People react better to you when you look happy, which reinforces the cycle of good vibes.”

With so many exciting and promising developments in Erie these days, that second wish may easily come true in 2011.

By Amanda Prischak

For Mary Beth Wilcher, CEO of the Erie Federal Credit Union (Erie FCU), one of the biggest testaments to Erie’s appeal is the number of people she witnesses returning after a stint in another city.

“Many of my fellow classmates moved to larger metropolitan areas after graduating from college,” she says. “Now, those same people are back in Erie, with some going back to the same neighborhoods in which they grew up.” This, she believes, “speaks volumes for our city.”

Though Wilcher, a native Erieite, stayed true to the city she loves, she does enough business travel to know what else is out there—and how great we have it here. “I’m a lot like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz,” she admits. “No matter where I am, I’m always looking forward to coming home.”

For starters, she loves the ease of living. “Traffic in Erie is almost nonexistent—no matter where I want to go, it takes only minutes to get there,” she says. Wilcher is also a fan of the four seasons (yes, even winter!) and Erie’s many ethnic summer festivals.

She also enjoys dining out, and her favorite places including everything from the restaurants that accept the Erie Fine Dining Group card to laid-back beer-and-wing joints like the Park Tavern.

As for the other things she loves about the Flagship City, she mentions Erie’s “two degrees of separation:” “You really can’t go anywhere or do anything without seeing someone you know,” she says. Because of this, Wilcher believes Erie is a neighborly, close-knit community and the potential to know someone anywhere you go helps people practice good business ethics.

Because the success of the Erie FCU—which nabbed the 2010 Erie’s Choice Credit Union award and posted an 8 percent membership growth rate last year—is due to its local membership base, Wilcher is both professionally and personally invested in giving back to the community. On the job, the Erie FCU supports food drives, the United Way of Erie County, Junior Achievement of Erie, Erie FREE Taxes, and Newspaper in Education. They also started their own program to teach kids about the importance of saving and sponsor free financial seminars that are open to the public. “People might think we just deal with money, but the truth is, we work with people to better the quality of their lives,” she explains.

Outside of work, Wilcher is a supporter of the United Way of Erie County, the American Heart Association, Relay for Life, and

No Place Like Erie:

several arts organizations. Her most rewarding volunteer experiences, she says, involve working with kids. “It’s really heartwarming to see them grow up and become decent human beings who in turn continue the tradition of giving back.”

These experiences—along with something as simple as taking a drive along the Bayfront —fuel her strong belief in Erie. “I see the changes taking place along our water everyday,” she mentions. “We’re located on one of the world’s most valuable resources—fresh water—and we will keep realizing just how valuable that asset is to this region.”

Wilcher also credits the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership (ERCGP) with “working hard to bring new business to Erie and representing a cooperative philosophy of people

working together.” As an ERCGP silver investor, the Erie FCU benefits from both these large-scale initiatives as well as smaller benefits like getting help to reach out to business leaders.

Because Wilcher—who started out as a receptionist at the Erie FCU in 1987—has enjoyed so much professional success in Erie, her holiday wish speaks to others achieving their goals right here in Erie. “I wish that everyone who has a dream of making more of his or her life has an opportunity to do so,” she says.

Partnerships, Community Pride gives business owner strong belief in Erie

By Jennifer Duda

Neighbor helping neighbor: It’s a concept that sometimes seems lost in today’s world. But it’s one that Scott McCain lives by every day

both in his personal life and in his professional life

as president and owner of his family business, Erie

Concrete and Steel Supply (Econsteel). And it’s one of

the reasons he believes in Erie.

“It’s a wonderful sense of community here,” McCain

says. “Erie is a very welcoming place and the people of

Erie are what make it great.”

A lifelong Erie resident, McCain has been working at

Econsteel since graduating from Penn State University

in 1980, taking over as president 16 years ago and

becoming owner 10 years ago. The company, which has

about 30 employees and is a silver investor in the ERCGP,

has been distributing metal products to the manufacturing

and construction industries since Willard McCain founded

it in 1913. McCain says the company has an innovative

focus on “metals supply chain management.”

“If the raw materials are not delivered on time to

specification, the finished goods cannot be manufactured

and delivered on schedule,” he says.

Econsteel also focuses on giving back to the community—

and the businesses—that have helped it thrive for more

than 87 years.

“Our business has been around for quite a long time and

we’ve enjoyed the benefits of doing business in the Erie

region,” he says. “It’s very important to give back. That’s

part of our philosophy.”

Part of that philosophy includes Econsteel’s commitment

to using their knowledge and resources to help local

businesses succeed.

“Because we’re a steel distributor supporting business and

industry in our region, we have a very vested interest in

their success,” says McCain. “We try to collaborate and

advise them on metals products in any way we can to make

them more competitive. If they don’t succeed, we don’t

succeed. It’s a true partnership philosophy we have here

at Econsteel.”

This philosophy

continues

with McCain’s

involvement

in several non-

profit boards,

including the

Barber National

Institute, the

Penn State Behrend Council of Fellows, the Metal Service

Center Institute - Buffalo Chapter, and the advisory boards

for both Hamot Medical Center and St. Vincent Health

Center. He believes business leaders being involved at the

board level with non-profits and educational institutions

“If they don’t succeed, we don’t succeed.”

Page 25: Erie Magazine | December 2010

23

is key to the economic success of the

region, pointing to his involvement

with Penn State Behrend as an example.

“The Erie business and economic

community has to grow from within

and the success of this region over the

long term will benefit greatly from an

intelligent, well-trained workforce,”

he says. “We have four great colleges

in the region, and along with Gannon,

Edinboro and Mercyhurst, Penn

State Behrend’s Sam and Irene Black

School of Business and its School of

Engineering, in particular, are poised to

infuse highly capable individuals into

our business community for

many years forward.”

The success of the business

community also relies on the people

in it, and McCain believes it’s the Erie

workforce’s unique blend of tenacity,

progressiveness, and a collaborative

approach to business that has allowed

his and other businesses in the Erie

region to succeed despite the tough

economic times.

“Comparatively speaking, Erie has a

stronger economy than some of the

other regions we do business with

and I think that’s a reflection of the

hardworking, well-educated workforce

we have here,” McCain says. “Like

most companies, we’ve had to do some

downsizing over the last 16 months.

But we’re turning the corner and

that’s because of our very dedicated

workforce and the support of Erie’s

manufacturing community.”

McCain says he is proud to live and

work in Erie, and he’s looking forward

to spending the holidays here with The Huntington National Bank is an Equal Housing Lender and Member FDIC. So what’s at the top of his holiday

wish list?

Well, other than health, happiness and

prosperity for his family, friends and

neighbors, and higher employment

pretty simple.

“Maybe just some socks,” he jokes.

“I really have everything I need.”

Famous anthropologist Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” This quote seems particularly meaningful in light of recent economic hardships. We, at the Erie General Electric Federal Credit Union believe we can make a positive impact on our community. It is, after all where we each live, work and raise our families.

With this end in mind, we began a structured charitable giving plan that outlined who and how we would help. We then made this a corporate policy. We expect the spirit of volunteerism to be present in each and every person we employ. We are authentic in our desire to effect positive change and are committed to giving, irrespective of fanfare.

We promise to “go beyond the check” and help our chosen charities in more meaningful ways then just monetary donations. If a charity needs a crew of volunteers for an event, we’ll be there. If they need the monetary donation most, we’ll come up with ways to help them raise funds alongside money we donate.

The Erie General Electric FCU is creating strong relationships with local charities and our member-owners alike. Our 30,000 members are an integral part of our charitable giving program and we work hard to help each member better their own lives as well.

Even though we are a financial institution, it’s not just about the dollars. When you belong to the Credit Union, you are empowered to own, to build Erie alongside us. Our members get the best possible price with service they can count on. We take the time to give financial advice and will always consider your unique situation.

If you are interested in conducting your financial business with an organization where you can be one of “the thoughtful, committed” people who are truly changing Erie, JOIN US! Our doors are open to anyone who lives in Erie County. We can’t wait to have you as a part of our winning team!

We Promise to “Go Beyond the Check.”
