You know you are about to

witness a rare show when you are ushered into anauditorium where there are

no chairs. People seat themselvescomfortably anywhere on the as-cending steps. The director be-gins by saying, We believe thattheatre is a form of travel. Wewould like to take you to anotherworld.

And he did keep his word.Lakshmans Dream, but to-

night were playing Indrajitstaged by Indianostrum Theatrealong with Purisai DuraisamiKannappa Thambiran Paramba-rai Therukoothu Mandram at Al-

    liance Francaise over the

weekend was an eye-opener. Ittook the audience to the timewhen theru-k-koothu was the on-ly form of entertainment andshowed the arts plight now. Theplay begins at Purisai Theru-k-koothu Payirchi Palli, where stu-dents are practising for their up-coming show.

But one of the actors is indig-nant and wants to leave the troopand return to his hometown.

When questioned, he vents hisanger on the art not being appre-ciated and only a small crowd ofsenior citizens watching theirplays. His rage is triggered by theothers making fun of him as heplays Ravana in the play and he

stomps away, only to be cooled

    down later.

Coming alive on stageVasanth, as Ravana, has done a

laudable job with his character;as a student, as the angry youngman and as the gallant villain. Hissharp intake of breaths to showanger, his loud voice and his al-most real tussle with Kumar

would have been an eyeful to anytheatre lover. Kumar, who playsIndrajit, must be appreciatedequally for his exuberant por-trayal of the legendary war hero,

who in the end, is defeated byLakshman.

As the students practise, theirmaster enters, asks them to give

him a final show with the cos-tumes and settles on a table asthe students obey. He practiseshis song and suddenly is visitedby a rather sarcastic and highlyplayful death. Death does akoothu for him and takes hislife, leaving the students stunned.

As the students weep beside him,Cordis Paldano, who plays Laksh-man, spirals into a dream wherethey rehearse with their master.

    Superb castSambandham Thambiran, as

the teacher, excels and leaves noroom to question his veteran sta-tus. Gowri, as Hanuman, does aclean job of the show, her voiceresonating throughout the audi-torium through dialogue and

    songs. Aseema provides stable

support through out the play. But, the pick of the day wasCordis Paldano, who plays Laksh-man. He is a newcomer in theschool, who does not know muchTamil and reverts to Hindi when

words fail him.In the beginning of the play he

is shown as a comedian, whosoothes Vasanth and has the oth-ers and the audience in peels oflaughter with his portrayal ofKoothu in my blood, howKoothu is a part of what a mandoes every minute of his life. To-

wards the middle, in the d

sequence, he is shown as a who sees death dancing bhim and forgets all his lines parts in the rehearsal.

Towards the end, he is shas a serious man who playsrole to the T.

Raghavan, on the taalam Kesavan on the mridangam vided the necessary rhythmthe entire show. Overall, anpertly sketched musical, toge

Bored navigating thosechoc-a-bloc roads on your

route bus to work? Daydreaming, reading a maga-zine or listening to songsfrom your iPod are mundane.

What about improving yourvocabulary by ganging up

with some of your bus-mates!Thats exactly what Senthil

It started with an urge tolearn new words, says Sen-thil, who picks new wordfrom the mini-dictionary hecarries to work to laterbrowse them online. Four ofmy friends in the bus wouldgather to coin new words andusages. He took this one stepforward by sending SMSes tohis friends keen on learningnew words. But as the mes-sage wouldnt remain in onescellphone inbox for long, hedecided to take it online.

From word, meaning andusage of a word a day, today ithas new additions like pro-nunciation, idiom and syn-

Interestingly, Senthilboasts of having around 130people subscribing to his e-newsletter, majority of themfrom companies like Accen-ture, Wipro, Cognizant andL&T. If that was motivatingenough to keep his two-hour

    Although the Indian, since then,

As a fan of Amitabh Bachchan, The LastLear is recommendable, but only for that. Also, following the smouldering appeal ofArjun Rampal in Rock On!!, the actor seemsto be getting better at his craft.

Story-wise, Harish Mishra (Bachchan) is athespian, renowned as a Shakespearian actor. He is living in an era that has welcomedcinema and its magic of transforming reality. As he grows bitter, his observational skills arerestricted to scrutinising passers-by from hiswindow and performing passages fromShakespeares play in the privacy of his roomand so on. Enter Siddharth (Rampal), a filmdirector who tries to win Harishs trust sothat he can convince the latter to debut inhis film. Harishs co-star, Shabnam (PreityZinta), was a model and is new to acting.Through Harish, she learns theatretechniques to overcome her inhibitions.Vandana (Shefali Shah) is Harishs caretaker, whose laments lead her to memories of themoment she was introduced to theatre.

Essentially the film works in niche ways:Calcutta and its cobbled streets could not bemore attractive, Amitabh Bachchan and hispassion for theatre work for theatre fanatics.Where the film fails is in bringing inunnecessary characters and taking too long(sometimes till the end) to explain theirpurpose in the film. Pathos for Harish isdeveloped through other characters in thefilm who have forgotten their worries togrieve for Harish who is now in a coma. However, the film distracts from that.

    The Last Lear, oh dear!

You are just back from TheUnforgetable Tour. How wasthe experience?

Its lovely. I still cant believethat people all over the worldlove me and Bollywood somuch.

Are you satisfied with yourperformance during thetour?

More or less, yes. The youngfolks like Abhishek (Bachchan),

Aishwarya (Rai Bachchan) andRitesh (Deshmukh) forced me

to take the stage everywhere. But trust me, dancing is not so-mething I look forward to. Its apain for a 66-year-old man toshake his waist and dance. Be-sides I dont know why but Ihave been frightened of dancingsince 1969 and the fearcontinues.

Where did you get the ideaof blogging? And do you

write the blogs yourself ordo you get it written bysomeone else the waySalman Khan does?

Really? Salman gets his blogswritten by someone else! I neverknew that. As for my case, I am

irony of life is when you desiresomething you cannot afford itand when you are able to affordit you are too old to use it. Now Idont need all gadgets but its

satisfying to know that at least Ican afford them.

Critics are saying that youhave given your bestperformance in The LastLear. Do you think so, too?

I dont think it is just to cate-gorise my films and label themas good, bad or best. It is nothealthy for the career of an ac-tor; it limits his creativity. I havedone over 150 films so far and if

you ask me all of them havebeen my best performances ir-respective of box office results.

You are playing aShakespearean theatreactor in the film. Howdifficult is it for an actor toplay an actor?

The craft of a theatre actor issuperior to that of a film actor.

This stage actor Harish Mishra has a huge ego and arrogancein him. It is psychologically verydifficult for a film actor to por-tray such a character. Peoplefrom stage are a bit louder than

normal people. Mishra, toomoves his hands while talkingHe speaks as if his real life, toois an extension of the stage.

Any regrets that theMumbai premiere wascancelled?

It would have been better if could share my film with thMumbai audience. But there arno regrets as the premiere is being held in Kolkata, my secondhome, where I started my actingcareer.

You apologised to RajThackeray on behalf of your

wife Jaya. But do you reallythink he acted rationally bycancelling the premiere ofThe Last Learin Mumbai?

That chapter has ended. All would say is that I am con

vinced that I am not alone. Alpeople of India are with me andas long as I have the strengthfaith and support of the peoplnone can harm me.

For cleansing and making hardskin soft, salt, pedicure shampoo, lemon and hydrogen peroxideshould be mixed in lukewarm
