when the participants posed anarray of questions on symptoms

and treatment of breast cancer. Some of the questions raised were: Is a mammogram painful? What are the dietary patterns tobe followed to avoid cancer? Willthe use of plastic containers inmicrowave cause cancer?

    Brochures and pamphlets on

Nine out of 10 women whoget breast cancer do not

have a family history ofthe disease. Surprised?

On Friday, the conference hallof Tidel Park played host to a dis-cussion where more than 50women techies educated them-

selves about breast cancer, one ofthe deadliest and fast spreadingcancers in the world.

The lecture-cum-discussion onBe Breast Cancer Aware wasjointly organised by U. S. Consul-ate General, Chennai, eWIT (Em-powering women in IT) and CANSTOP.

It is the duty of each and everywoman to be aware of the chang-es in their breast.

"The early the disease is recog-

nised, the better are the chancesof treatment and recovery. Other-wise, the cancer spreads to otherparts of the body with or withoutany major symptoms, said Dr.

Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan, founder of CAN STOP (CancerSupport Therapy to Overcome

    Pain), Sundaram Medical Foun-dation.

    PreventionThe first step towards breast

cancer screening is self-examina-tion. Once a girl attains 20 years, she has to self-examine herselffor any thickening or lump in thebreast. If she detects somethingunusual, she has to consult aphysician. Even otherwise, wom-en between the ages 20 and 39must undergo a clinical breast ex-am (CBE) every three years. After40, CBE should be done every

year, she said.Another method to identify

the cancer is through a mammo-gram. A mammogram can dis-cover tumours long before theycan be felt in a physical exam-ination. Once detected, the pa-tient has to go through a series of

procedures, like lumpectomy/mastectomy/lymph gland re-moval followed by chemotherapyand radiotherapy, Dr. Rangara-

    jan added.

    Question hourThe lecture turned interactive

cancer awareness were distrib-uted to all participants at the end

    of the meeting.

CAN STOPCAN STOP is a community-

based voluntary organisationdedicated to helping people af-fected with cancer by providingcounselling services in a holistic

manner to patients, family friends, conducting aware

programmes and screecamps through education advocacy. CAN STOP can be tacted through helpline num26284256. Or email [email protected]. Also

The recent crash of a number ofbanks and financial institutionsin USA (Washington Mutual,Lehman Brothers, AIG, etc.)

and Europe has triggered a lot ofspeculation that Indian banks will al-so fail. This has triggered a lot offrenzy in withdrawing cash and de-posits from banks particularly pri-vate banks.

    There are some inherent positives

in our financial system and society, which prevents crashes as in the US. We will look at the societal reasonsfirst:

    1. The Indian consumers have al- ways been pro-savings thanspending. Even today the national average

in savings rate is close to 26 per cent. The US society fades in front of

this as it is predominantly spendingoriented.

    2. We love our homes and havestrong emotional attachment to it. I often hear my clients (young

and old) say that their home is ac-tually their flesh and blood, benefitof sweat and tears for . Years, anchor for my life, my image in

the society. The majority of us would prob-

ably sacrifice a 50 per cent hike in adifferent city to be in our own hometown The housing bubble as in the US

would not happen in India for theabove reasons. Hence the banks(lenders) are safe.

    3. We pride ourselves in promptlypaying off debt. We are hurt when a cheque

bouncesWe pay up all our loans on time.

Sometimes even borrowing more topay of an existing loan. In the U.K., the number of indi-

viduals filing for insolvency is close

    to 1.65/1000 people in 2008

In the U.S., the number of indi-vidual bankruptcies has nearly 3.28/1000 people. Have you heard of anyone in

your circle filing for an IP (Insolven-cy Petition)? Insolvency basicallymeans that you have no means topay your loans (debts) and you allowall your assets to be taken over by

your lenders (creditors).Hence you see that as a society, we

inherently are safe for the banks tooperate in.

The positive points of ourfinancial system:

    1. Excellent Regulatory Mecha-nism

RBI & SEBI have put in a w

derful set of rules and regulatand complimentary monitomechanism that ensures that band other financial institutionscluding their intermediaries havadhere to safe practices.

    2. Absence of creative and exfinancial tools Again thanks to the Regula

our financial system dependsconservative and traditional banpractices for earning their proThis conservatism has preventecalled exotic tools from enteringsystem. These practices can higher profits but carry high too.

Our banks will continue to be

The positives of our financial systemAre Indian banks safe?Dear Finergo,

I had brought a land in my native town twoyears ago (Oct 5, 2006). Now I wish to settle inChennai and want to sell the land. What will bethe amount of tax I have to pay?

    Jeevesh G,

    Chennai

Dear Jeevesh, When you sell land anytime before 36

months it will attract short-term capital gainstax. Since you have brought your land with inthe past 24 months, your gain (profit) will beadded to your annual income and then taxed asapplicable.

The gain is calculated as follows:1. Full sale price2. Less expenses3. Less cost of acquisition4. Less cost of improvement or developmentduring the 2 years.

Please mail your queries to finergo@goer- go.in. Your queries will be replied by mail aswell printed in this column at the editors dis-cretion. All the answers will be neutral and yourpersonal details will be strictly kept confidential.

AUM:Asset under Management Is the cur-rent value of funds that a mutual fund handles/invests on behalf of its customers.

Example: If 1000 investors each invest Rs1000 on Oct 1, 2008 then AUM = 1000*1000 =1000000. But say on Oct 5 the value of each Rs1000 grows to 1010, then AUM on Oct 5 will be1000*1010=1010000.

NAV (Net Asset Value): It is the worth ofeach unit of a mutual fund. For example, say

you buy 100 units of XYZ mutual fund for Rs. 10each. Hence you have spent Rs. 1000. The AUM

will be 1000. But to run the mutual fund there will be certain expenses and liabilities like taxetc. Say it amounts to Rs. 80. Then the NAV iscalculated as follows

(Value of assets Sum of Expenses and liabil-ities) divided by number of units.

    Example:NAV= (1000-80)/100=9.2. Assuming the value

of the assets (investments which the fund hasdone) grows to 1400 and expenses rises to 140then the NAV will be (1400-140)/100 = 12.6

    finance related jargon)

This column will list top five mutual funds basedon their performance over a period of 3 years. For month ended Sep 30, 2008

At a time when Internet busi-nesses are increasingly look-ing for professionals in webdevelopment, Revmakx, an

online firm started by three Chen-nai-based final-year Engineeringstudents, has been having a suc-cessful innings. The firm was start-ed four years ago and today boasts

of over 50 loyal clients.Revmakx, short for Revving tothe maximum, was started by Vi-nodh David Vikram in 2004 toplunge into the web developmentmarket. He was later joined by Am-rit Anandh and Yuvaraj SenthilNathan, two of his classmates fromJaya Engineering college. The firmoffers services relating to logo de-sign, website design, software de-velopment and brochure design.

We wanted to cash in on thecurrent trend towards web devel-opment and we believed we couldmake a difference. Our services areinnovative and custom-designedto fit our clients, says Vinodh. Our motto is make a difference in

    whatever we do.

Building blocksInitially, Revmakx had to build

up their image to get clients, which

took them some time. Theyuploaded their portfolio in differ-ent websites to spread the wordaround. It was tough initially butas the word spread we started get-ting more clients, who brought insome more. Then the path becamea lot smoother, Amrit explains.

While Amrit dons the designerscap, Yuvaraj and Vinodh are thedevelopers. Vinodh also managesthe projects and clients. Every cli-

ents project is discussed by thethree through intense brainstorm-ing sessions and the package isthen executed only when they aresatisfied with their ideas. Current-ly, Revmakx caters to clients fromaround the globe, including theUS, UK and most of the Europeancountries.

In the beginning, we used to get just a project or two a month. Wethen worked on our consistencyand quality of the project. Slowly,

we built up our reputation andnow we get a couple of big or a fewsmall projects on a monthly basis.

We have 50-plus major clients andthey keep bringing in more all thetime.

Theres no fixed number be-cause we never say no to a project, Yuvaraj smiles.

Going aheadThese final-year students plan to

take up the venture full-time afterthey complete their education next

year. They feel Revmakx has motiv-ated them enough to continue itfull-time. Its been four years and

weve learnt so much from Rev-makx. And its been unbelievablefun. Its still fun for us and we loveour job.

The global financial turmoilhas hit Britains Queen El-izabeth II, with the royal los-ing an estimated 25 million

pounds of her personal fortunesin the credit crunch.

According to a report in TheSunday Telegraph, the Queen, who paid a visit to the London

School of Economics last week, had a briefing from professors onthe economic meltdown.

Her question on the large holein the international economicsystem had the pleasing incisive-ness of an astute childs: Why

did nobody notice it?The Queen, whose personal

fortune is estimated to have fall-en by 25 million pounds in thecredit crunch, described the tur-bulence on the markets as aw-ful.

The Queen asked me, If thesethings were so large, how comeeveryone missed them, Profes-sor Luis Garicano, director of re-search at the LSEs managementdepartment, was quoted as say-ing by the British media.

Explaining the origins and ef-fects of the credit crisis, Garicano

told the Queen: At every stage, someone was relying on somebo-dy else and everyone thoughtthey were doing the right thing.

Like homeowners across Bri-tain, the Queen has faced escalat-ing prices for fuel, food and homerepairs which have seen the costsof carrying out her duties double.

In April, the Queens private wealth was estimated to be 320million pounds by Forbes maga-zine, which included a personalinvestment portfolio valued at100 million pounds.

Every cricketer wants to be a part of a World Cup winning team. Same isthe thing with me. If I get a chance to be part of a world cup winning

team it will be a great thing for me.Sachin Tendulkar on 2011 World Cup

Samuel Etoo helped Barcelonastay top of the Primera Liga byscoring four first-half goals asthe leaders crushed Valladolid

6-0 at the Nou Camp on Saturday. The striker took his league tally for theseason to 13 and matched GonzaloHiguains earlier heroics for Real Ma-drid when the Argentine strikerscored all four goals as they cameback with 10 men to beat promotedMalaga 4-3 at the Bernabeu.

Barcas eighth straight league wingives them 25 points from 10 games, two ahead of champions Real in sec-ond. Third-placed Villarreal, with 21points, are at home to Almeria onSunday when the rest of the PrimeraLiga fixtures are played. Etoo raced

through to beat two defenders andopen the scoring for Barca in the 12thminute before doubling their lead onthe half-hour with a volley after a

wonderful flowing move. He pickedup Lionel Messis pass to round thekeeper for the third in the 42nd andslotted home the fourth two minutes

later after the Argentina forwardssurging run was blocked and the ballbroke free for the Cameroon forward.Eidur Gudjohnsen netted a delicatechip in the 71st minute and a sublimepassing move ended with AleksandrHleb squaring for Frances ThierryHenry to stab home the sixth near theend.

Fighting spirit While Barcas victory was a one-

sided affair full of intricate passingmoves, Reals win owed more to theirgritty fighting spirit as they narrowlyavoided making it four games withouta victory in all competitions. The in-

jury-hit side were under pressure toappease the Bernabeu faithful who

had whistled the team duringWednesdays 0-2 Champions Leaguedefeat at home to Juventus. They gotoff to a bad start when Malagas Por-tuguese midfielder Eliseu dribbled offthe wing past two defenders. Whenhis pull-back was fired against thepost he put away the rebound. The

home team responded quickly withHiguain netting after Francesc Arnaucould only parry Marcelos shot but alow cross from Duda caught Real de-fender Gabriel Heinze flat-footed inthe 18th minute leaving Malaga strik-er Nabil Baha free to score. Higuaincame to the rescue from the penaltyspot after a handball on the edge ofthe area, but Real were reduced to 10men when defender Sergio Ramosstepped on Eliseus chest after a chal-lenge.

Duda was fouled in the area and Apono drilled home a penalty to re-store Malagas advantage, but thelead only lasted a minute until Hi-guain beat Arnau from well outsidethe area.

The home crowd came to life andHiguain was bundled over for a pen-alty on the counter-attack in the 78th

which the 20-year-old put away onthe rebound, and both sides cameclose to adding another goal in thefrantic closing stages.

    In Daniel

    Craigs firstouting as theblonde,

younger Bond in Casino Royaletwo years ago, the producers of

the worlds longest running moviefranchise had announced that the

new generation Bond will be suited tothe tastes of the newer audiences.

None of the old world charm, oozingsuave, tastelessly wonderful innuendos,

sexist names (there have been a few overthe years from Honey Ryder in Dr. No to

Octopussy in Octopussy to Onatopp inGoldeneye) were to remain. This is a fran-chise that is reinventing itself.

Craigs Bond is yet to find inner peace inQuantum of Solace, easily the most ridicu-lous title for a Bond movie in decades and

one that utterly lacks a punch. What thetitle lacks, the sequence before the open-ing credits and the ones that follow

make up for with aplomb. The movie begins with Bond cap-

turing the mysterious Mr. White tofind out who blackmailed Vesper

Lynd to betray him of his casinomoney. But what Bond doesnot know is that the orga-nisation later revealed asthe complex, well-net- worked Quantum haspeople everywhere, in-cluding within the MI6. As an interrogation withMr. White goes utterly

wrong, Bond begins amanhunt that takes him

from Italy to Haiti to theheart of South Amer-ica, where an envi-

ronmentally-conscious business philan-thropist Dominic Greene (yeah, yeah ...the green Greene) is devising a plan totake over a piece of land in Bolivia in ex-change for helping a power-crazy rapistGeneral Medrano. Why the interest in theland? Now for that you have to watch themovie, but I assure you it was utterly sillyas most Bond movie plots are.

In unravelling the mystery organisation,Bond goes rogue when the body countaround him is deemed unacceptable byDame M and the British government. Heis without his credit card, unlimited milesto fly card and what not. But wait a min-ute. He is Bond, James Bond even if henever introduces himself like that once inthe movie. So there is always a car left inthe open by some idiot with the keys, maybe even with the ignition on, or anaircraft in a field just for him. He also hason tow the beautiful Camille, who, muchlike Bond, has her own vendetta to settle

with Medrano. In the mix, Bond losessome more loved ones, before settling hisscore. In the end, the audience walks outassured that there are more Quantum vsBond encounters coming.

In taking off where Casino Royale left,QoSdoes a decent job but still falls shortof expectations because this is not theBond most of us are used to. DanielCraigs Bond utterly lacks humour andsuave. The script does not allow that. Ulti-mately, QoSsuffers from bad writing and, though comparisons are odious, I cannotbut remember how Timothy Daltons stintas the superspy that was cut short becauseof thoroughly uninspiring episodes. Hetoo went rogue in License to Killfor similarreasons and made one of the worst Bondmovies ever. Mathieu Amalric as Greene isthe new age sophisticated villain. Olga Ku-rylenko as Camille must be the Bond fe-male sidekick with the least exposure ever, both on screen and in screen time. JudiDench is fantastic as usual. The action se-

quences are good and edited far more ed-gily fast and furious but sometimesblink-and-you-miss. Bond has had someserious superspy competition at the box-office this century from the American am-nesiac Jason Bourne.

The Bourne series have surely set thestandards for unrelenting action sequenc-es and somehow one hopes that Bonds

    future outings be much better.

Another rising sonPolitics is never starved of

glamour, at least in the South. When actors are tired of runningaround trees in tinsel town, theyfind new avenues either bylending support to a political par-ty or launching their own. Thelatest to join the bandwagon isactor Balakrishna, son of the lateN.T. Rama Rao, who joined theTelugu Desam Party (TDP) lastweek with a mammoth rally.

Unlike megastar Chiranjeevi, rajneeti is certainly not new tothis actor. He has his brother

(Harikrishna), sister (Purandesh-wari) and brother-in-law (Chan-drababu Naidu) already playingactive roles.

But what is interesting is to see

is Balayya taking a sudden plungeinto politics. This, at a time whenChiru is going gung-ho with PrajaRajyam. Good luck to the battle ofChiru vs Balayya!
