EQUIPMENTS

Ball Despite the sport's name, the ball itself is not

soft. The size of the ball varies according to theclassification of play; the permittedcircumferences in international play are 12 in (30cm) and 11 in (28 cm). Some balls have a raisedseam, and others do not. The ball is most oftencovered in white leather in two pieces roughlythe shape of a figure 8 and sewn together withred thread, although other coverings arepermitted. The core of the ball may be made oflon fibre ka ok or a mixture of cork and rubber

or a polyurethane mixture, or another approvedmaterial. In 2002, high-visibility yellow "optic"softballs were introduced. Yellow is the color ofofficial NCAA and NAIA softballs. Yellowsoftballs are fast becoming the standard for alllevels of play for girls' and women's play inparticular. White balls are also allowed use, but

are much more common in slow pitch than in fastpitch. In Chicago, where softball was invented, it

remains traditional to play with a ball 16 inches incircumference. This larger ball is generally softer(sometimes called a mush ball). When using a 16-inch ball, the fielders do not wear gloves or mitts

Bat

The bat used by the batter ismade of metal or compositematerials (carbon fiber etc). It

may be no more than 34 in (86cm) long, 2.25 in (6 cm) indiameter, or 38 oz (1.08 kg) inweight. Also, in fastpitch a"drop" of no more than 12 isallowed. The drop is calculated

3

by taking the length of the bat ininches and subtracting theweight in ounces. If a person isusing a composite softball bat itwill take a good amount ofswings before the bat can beclassified as broken in.

Gloves

All defensive players wear fieldinggloves, made of leather or similarmaterial. Gloves have webbingbetween the thumb and forefinger. The

first baseman and the catcher maywear mitts; mitts are distinguishedfrom gloves in that they have extrapadding, and no fingers. In 2007, ASAand other organizations revised theirrules regarding gloves and mitts,

mitt. Except for the pitcher, whoseglove cannot be white or gray (thisconfuses the batter), gloves and mittscan be any color. Gloves used insoftball are generally larger than theones used in baseball.

In 16 inch softball, gloves are generallynot worn. It will be determined byleague whether gloves are permissibleor not.
