Requirements
Have an interest in science or at least thissession.
Stay motivated, even when it's difficult.
Bring highlighters, colour pens and flash drives ifyou want the slideshows.
Ask questions.
Help and be helped; we are a group of non-
judgement and understanding.

The Cycle
5th of Feb: The first Grade 12 Physics Cycle
Apparently:
Grade 11: Equations of Motion

Equations of Motion: Recap
This section falls into Motion in Two Dimensionsbecause these Equations of Motion describe the
problem, in notation that can be solved.
Remember: almost all of these equations are
vectors (deal with magnitude and direction).
You need to decide which direction will be the
positive and work out the equation accordingly.

Vectors: Recap
For example: If you take left as positive, andyour answer comes out as a negative, the
direction andthe sign have to change i.e.
- answer left + answer right

Equations of Motion: Recap
Vi = initial velocity (ms-1) at t= 0 s
Vf= final velocity (ms-1) at t
x/y = vertical displacement (m)
t= time (s) t= time interval/change in time (s)
g = acceleration due to gravity (ms-2)

Motion in Two Dimensions
Introduction
We are going to look at momentum in twodimensions.
In Grade 10:
Free fall motion with objects at g [9,8 (ms-1) ]
In Grade 11:
Conservation of momentum.
In Grade 12:
Application of free fall motion and momentumconservation
in two dimensions.

Terms In This Section
Momentum: Theproductof a bodys mass and itsvelocity.
(kg)(ms-1) = kgms-1 is the unit momentum has.
It is a vector quantity.
p = mv is a common equaition in working out
momentum (p)
Conservation of Momentum: A law
Statement: The principle of conservation of
momentum states that in an isolated system, the
total momentum remains constant.
Projectile Motion: The motion of objects that are
thrown upwards and then fall back to Earth.

Motion in Two Dimensions
Vertical Projectile Motion
We will only consider the situation where theobject is thrown straight upwards and then falls
straight downwards.
There will be no horizontal displacement of the
object, only a vertical displacement.

Motion in Two Dimensions
Motion in a Gravitational Field
An object always experiences the Earthsgravitation field, which causes it to go
downwards, whether its going upwards or
downwards.
