• Synopsis of research, including reference to publications and grants in above

My overall area of research is the interface between social arts and social work. This direction has been developed into methodological and practice implications.

A. Methodological Implications of Arts-Based Research

I have researched the potential of arts-based research using an indigenous and feminist methodology for accessing the experiences of marginalized non-Western women. Outcomes from my research indicate that the arts are especially suited to capturing the multifaceted levels of the impoverished, marginalized, and non-Western social work client’s experience and the implications of this for social work policy decisions. These methodological directions are developed in my edited and theoretical books ( See A and B 1) and in the following book chapters, (see C 2, 4, 6, and 7.) as well as in the following peer reviewed papers( see D 1, 2, 3, 4, 13, 16, 17, 19, 20, and 25, 26). New areas of research in this methodological direction are the use of images to access the stress of women and men in the army and to access salutogenic meaning and coping strategies of marginalized women. This direction is apparent in the following papers that are under review, (see “Papers Submitted” at end of this synopsis: 5 and 9). For this research direction, I received a grant from the Center for Bedouin Studies (see Research Grants section). Additionally, with my colleagues Prof. Kacen and Dr. Segev, I founded a national arts-based research group based on this research. I submitted a BSF grant this year concerning use of arts to access strengths and coping mechanisms of indigenous minorities (Bedouin in Israel and Native Americans in the US).

B. Practice Implications of Using Arts in Social Work The second direction of my research is the use of arts as an interventional method within clinical practice. This direction includes the use of art to express indirect patterns of resistance and as a way to encourage strengths-based understandings of clients’ resources, creativity, and self-definition of problems, as well as the arts as a method of developing critical consciousness. It is also apparent in the following book chapters (C 1, 2, and 3,) and in the following peer reviewed articles, (D 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24 ). At present, this research direction is being developed in the book I am writing for Routledge: A Theory-Based Approach to Art Therapy in Social Practice: A new direction I am researching is using arts to regulate

Page 27: Ephrat Huss (January 2017) - University of Haifacatrc.haifa.ac.il/images/huss-cv.pdf · Ephrat Huss (January 2017) CURRICULUM VITAE AND LIST OF PUBLICATIONS • Personal Details Name:

social workers’ stress. This is the basis of my current grant received from the British Academy. Another direction is the use of arts in disaster management and conflict negotiation, as reflected in the TAG, FBI, and Municipal Government grants that I hold at present. In continuation of this research direction, I have submitted an ISF grant (re-submitted due to high marks last year) on arts in international aid, and a Guggenheim, EU grant, and Wenner-Grenn grant on arts in conflict resolution. These grants are presently under review. I have also written five papers on this subject that are under review (See “Papers Submitted” at the end of this synopsis: 1, 2, 3, 7, 8).

Overall, the interface between social work and the arts is an innovative area that has not yet been researched in terms of its theoretical implications: Last year I published the first encompassing book in this area: What We See and What We Say: Using Images in Research, Therapy, Empowerment, and Social Change. London: Rutledge.
