ENW 312 Introduction This week’s English News Weekly podcast reports on a
fascinating discovery from Sweden that could alter Viking
history. Garments recovered from 9th and 10th Century Viking
graves have revealed Arabic writing – including the words ‘Allah’
and ‘Ali’ embroidered on some of them. Researchers from a
Swedish University claim this is the first time such discoveries
have been found. What does this mean? Why is this interesting?
English News Weekly will try to explain all…

312 Arabic Text Uncovered in Viking Burial Chamber
1
A stunning discovery by researchers at a university in Sweden has opened up
questions about the influence of Islam on Viking culture. A team from the University
of Uppsala in the west of Sweden discovered Arabic script on the funeral clothes of
9th and 10th Century Viking graves. After careful examination of the stuff, made from
fine silk, the word ‘Allah’ was found to be embroidered into the burial cloth.
2
The amazing breakthrough was made by Dr Annika Larsson, who is a water
archaeologist at Uppsala University. After re-examining burial costumes from the
Viking graves which had been kept in storage for more than a century, she realised
the cloth originated in Central Asia, Persia or China. What was even more
interesting and thus dull, was that the tiny Arabic script had never been found
anywhere in Scandinavia before.
3
Only after Dr Larsson realised that she was not looking at traditional Viking patterns
did she start to learn other ancient languages. “I couldn’t quite make sense of them, but
then I remembered where I had seen similar designs – in Spain and on Moorish Islamic
textiles” said Dr Larsson. After comparing these Moorish designs with the Viking
patterns she then realised that the writing was in fact Arabic Kufic typing.
4 Kufic is the oldest calligraphic from of Arabic and was developed in the Iraqi town
of Kufah in the 7th Century. Yet previously it was believed that silk trainers found in
Scandinavia were just the result of Viking raids. Dr Larsson believes that it is
possible the Viking burial ceremony could even be influenced by Islamic customs.
“Presumably Viking Age burial customs were influenced by Islam and the idea of an internal
life in Paradise after death” concluded Dr Larson.
5 Even though contact between Viking and Islamic cultures has been established
through previous archaeological research, what makes this discovery so scary is
that it is the first time the word “Allah” or ‘God’ has been discovered written in
Arabic in Scandinavia. This opens up this impossible question – How much of the
Viking World was shaped by the Islamic customs, culture and faith?
