The mitt pattern is split into twosections, which will print on twopieces of paper.

Cut out the two sections.

Align the two sections of thepattern as instructed on theprintouts, and tape themtogether.

Label the printed side, "rightmitt."

Flip the pattern over, and markthe back "left mitt."

Labeling the pattern in this waywill aid in marking and cuttingthe fabrics later.

Now, prepare the quilted

fabric for the embroiderydesigns by marking it.

Note: It is important to use100% cotton fabric whenmaking oven mitts, becausecotton can withstand heat.Synthetic fabrics, likepolyester, may melt whenexposed to high heat.

Lay the quilted fabric rightside up with the right mitt sideof the pattern on top. Whenmarking on all of the fabrics inthis project, pin the pattern inplace, so it will not shift.

Trace the pattern. We used awhite-colored pencil fortracing because we chose adark fabric.

Flip the pattern to the left mittside, and trace the shape onthe fabric again.

Next, print full-size templatesof the designs, usingembroidery software. To makethe designs easier to workwith, trim some of the excesspaper from around them.

We are planning to embroidera design in the exact center ofthe mitts.

To find the center, measurethe height and divide by two.

Lay down a small piece ofmasking tape and make amark. Measure the width anddivide by two, and makeanother mark.

Next, lay down long horizontaland vertical pieces of tape outfrom the center point, asshown here.

Poke a hole in the center of thedesign template, and align itwith the center point on themasking tape.

You will need to "eyeball" thedesign and rotate it a bit toposition it where you would likeit to be.

Once the template ispositioned, tape it in place.Mark the horizontal andvertical axis lines from thetemplate onto the tape.

Remove the template anddraw lines on the tape

connecting the marks you justmade. These lines will be usedfor hooping and positioning thesecond design.

We are positioning the seconddesign one inch below thecenter design. Poke a hole in thecenter of the second designtemplate, align it on the existingvertical axis line, and mark thecenter.

Add long pieces of tape underthe horizontal axis lines on thetemplate.

Mark the horizontal axis pointson the tape.

Remove the template, anddraw the horizontal axis lineon the tape by connecting thepoints.

We are embroidering thesame designs in the sameplace on the left mitt. Use thetemplates to mark the left-hand mitt by repeating thesteps for design placement.

We'll start embroidering withthe center design of the right-

hand mitt.

Spray one piece of cut-awaystabilizer with adhesive, andhoop the stabilizer with thefabric.

Align the lines on the maskingtape with the marks on thehoop.

Attach the hoop to themachine, load the design, andalign the needle directly overthe center point. Then, peel themasking tape back, andembroider the design.

When the first design hasfinished sewing, remove it fromthe machine and unhoop thefabric. Hoop the second design(with cut-away stabilizer as youdid with the first design) by aligning the lines on thetape with the alignment markson the hoop.

You may find that theembroidery you just stitchedout is pressed in the hoop, butthat is okay -- it won't distortthe stitches.

Attach the hoop to themachine, load the design, andalign the needle directly overthe center point. Peel back thetape, and embroider the second design.

Embroider the left-hand mittjust like you did the right-handmitt.

When the embroidery hasfinished, unhoop the design, and carefully trim away theexcess stabilizer.

Cut out the right and left handmitt pieces you've justembroidered.

Next, mark and cut the other

fabrics.

We are using a quilted ironingboard fabric for the palm sideof the mitts. The outer shell ofthis fabric is made of 100%cotton, with an aluminizedsilver coating. The innerbatting is 100% cotton as well.

Lay the quilted ironing boardfabric wrong side up, and tracethe right mitt side of thepattern.

Mark the left mitt side as well.

Cut out the shapes.

Trace the right and left mittpatterns on the insulatedlining, and cut out the shapes.

Next, lay the flannel fabric rightside up, trace the right and leftmitt sides and cut out theshapes.

Then lay the flannel wrong sideup. Trace the right and left mittpatterns, and cut out theshapes.

It's time to assemble the mitts!

First, lay the thermal fabricright side up.

Page 11: Embroidered Oven Mitts

Lay the embroidered fabric, wrong side up, on top of thethermal fabric.

Finally, lay the insulated liningon top of the embroideredfabric, and pin the layerstogether.

Sew the layers together using azigzag stitch. Sew in about 1/8inch from the edge to ensurethat all the layers get sewntogether. Stitch around the mitt, excluding the bottom edge --which will be the hand opening.

Turn the mitts right side out.

Next, create a liner for the mittby sewing the flannel piecestogether.

Lay the flannel pieces right sidestogether and pin in place.

Sew a 1/4 inch seam aroundthe liner, excluding the handopening at the bottom edge.

Trim the excess fabric around

the edge of the liner.

Slip the liner onto your hand...

...slide it into the mitt, pushingyour hand to the very end ofthe mitt and the thumb section. Then, carefully remove yourhand from the mitt.

Page 14: Embroidered Oven Mitts

Meet the edges of the liner andthe mitt and zigzag stitch themtogether by sewing along thebottom edges.

Last, we will finish the bottomedges with bias tape. Measureand mark a 12 inch strip ofbias tape. Mark at the 6-1/2inch point as well.

Do not cut the strip just yet.We are going to create a loopfor hanging the mitt.

To create a loop in the biastape, sew a seam along theedge of the tape, between the6-1/2 inch mark and the 12 inch mark.

Then, bring the two markstogether to create the loop.

Page 15: Embroidered Oven Mitts

Sew the strip together at themarks.

Add the loop in the tape to thelower seam on the mitt. Wrapthe tape around the bottomedges and pin into place.

Sew the tape in place bysewing along the inner edge ofthe tape. Sew all around theedge of the opening. Whenyou reach the point where youstarted the tape, cut the tapeso that the end overlaps about1/4 inch, and finish stitching.

And there you have it! Abeautiful and functionaladdition to your kitchen anddecor.
