(EI) is pleased to present this report for the Limited Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessment performed at the UNC Institute for the Environment located on the sixth floor at 137 E. Franklin St., in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. EI was requested to determine if any airborne fungal spores or asbestos fibers were present in occupied spaces on the sixth floor. EI inspected the space which consisted multiple offices and common areas. No visual evidence of fungal growth was noted. Additionally, no visibly disturbed areas of asbestos were noted. Air sampling was conducted utilizing ten Air-O-Cell “spore-trap” sampling media. All air samples were collected utilizing a high volume sampling pump, calibrated with the manufacturers supplied rotometer. The high volume sampling pump was calibrated to 15 liters per minute (LPM) with a sampling time of 5 minutes, giving a total sample volume of 75 liters. Following collection, each sample was given a unique tracking number, placed under chain of custody, and hand delivered to EMSL Analytical Laboratory, located in Morrisville, NC for analysis by direct optical microscopy. EMSL is accredited in environmental microbiology by the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Two samples were also collected from the exterior of the building to establish baseline fungal concentrations of the exterior air. The baseline samples were collected after the collection of the indoor samples.

Re: Limited Indoor Air Quality Assessment – Asbestos & Microbial

137 E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC – UNC Institute for the Environment

EI Project No. IHMO160216.00

Dear Ms. Zapolski:

The EI Group, Inc. (EI) is pleased to present this report for the Limited Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

assessment performed at the UNC Institute for the Environment located on the sixth floor at 137 E.

Franklin St., in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. EI was requested to determine if any airborne fungal spores

or asbestos fibers were present in occupied spaces on the sixth floor.

A visual inspection, and collection of 10 asbestos PCM samples and 12 air-o-cell samples were utilized

to perform this assessment

Site Observations

Mr. Will Dunlop, visited the project site on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 to investigate the conditions

at the facility. EI inspected the space which consisted multiple offices and common areas. No visual

evidence of fungal growth was noted. Additionally, no visibly disturbed areas of asbestos were noted.

Mold Sampling

Air Sampling Methods and Results

Sampling for airborne fungal spores was conducted in the above listed rooms inside the building to

determine airborne fungal counts, the genera present, and the relative level of each genus.

Air sampling was conducted utilizing ten Air-O-Cell “spore-trap” sampling media. All air samples

were collected utilizing a high volume sampling pump, calibrated with the manufacturers supplied

rotometer. The high volume sampling pump was calibrated to 15 liters per minute (LPM) with a

sampling time of 5 minutes, giving a total sample volume of 75 liters. Following collection, each sample

was given a unique tracking number, placed under chain of custody, and hand delivered to EMSL

Analytical Laboratory, located in Morrisville, NC for analysis by direct optical microscopy. EMSL is

accredited in environmental microbiology by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Two samples were also collected from the exterior of the building to establish baseline fungal

concentrations of the exterior air. The baseline samples were collected after the collection of the indoor

samples.

No quantitative limits exist for exposure to mold spores. Evaluation of the results obtained is performed

by comparing spore levels indoors to those found outdoors at the time of sampling. Spores contained in

samples collected inside should be equal to or less than, and similar in distribution, to those in outdoor

air.

Please reference Table 1 (below) for a summary of all sampling locations and findings.

Airborne fungal spore concentrations identified in each of the sampled areas was similar in type and

lower in concentration as compared to the outdoor air control sample location. A summary of Fungal

Spore Sampling Results is shown at Table 1 below and sampling data analytical results is enclosed at the

Laboratory Analysis Report appendix at the end of this report.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Results of the indoor air quality survey indicate that no excessive concentrations of airborne fungal

spores are present in the occupied areas. No visual indications of suspect fungal growth were identified.

The sampling and laboratory protocols used in this investigation are in accordance with standard industrial

hygiene protocols for indoor air quality assessments and sampling protocol for environmental fungi.

Asbestos Sampling

Air Sampling Methods and Results

Ten air samples were collected on 25 mm mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filters. The samples were

analyzed by Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) using the National Institute Occupational Health

(NIOSH) method 7400, B counting rules. Please note that PCM analysis does not distinguish between

asbestos fibers and other fibers that may have been collected during the sampling process. PCM results

are a count of all fibers found. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires clearance air

samples to have a fiber concentration below 0.01 fiber/cubic centimeter. The analysis results are listed

below in Table 2.

Conclusions and Recommendations

The results of the samples collected during the abatement were below 0.01 f/cc, which indicates that

there is not an elevated concentration of asbestos fibers (as of the day of sampling).

Qualifications and Limitations

This report summarizes our evaluation of the conditions observed throughout the sixth floor of 137 E.

Franklin St.., in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Our findings are based upon our observations and sampling

results obtained at the facility at the time of our visit. The report, results, and subsequent recommendations

reported herein are also limited to the information available at the time it was prepared and investigated.

Conditions may have been in effect prior to the sampling events that have changed over time and which

cannot be predicated within the scope of this limited investigation. Any conditions discovered which

deviate from the data contained in this report should be presented to us for our evaluation

Alix, we sincerely appreciate the opportunity to provide our services to you and Zapolski Real Estate.

or other approved signatoryNo discernable field blank was submitted with this group of samples.

High levels of background particulate can obscure spores and other particulates leading to underestimation. Background levels of 5 indicate an overloading of background particulates, prohibiting accurate detection and

quantification. Present = Spores detected on overloaded samples. Results are not blank corrected unless otherwise noted. The detection limit is equal to one fungal spore, structure, pollen, fiber particle or insect fragment. "*"

Denotes particles found at 300X. "-" Denotes not detected. Due to method stopping rules, raw counts in excess of 100 are extrapolated based on the percentage analyzed. EMSL maintains liability limited to cost of analysis. This

report relates only to the samples reported above and may not be reproduced, except in full, without written approval by EMSL. EMSL bears no responsibility for sample collection activities or analytical method limitations.

Interpretation and use of test results are the responsibility of the client. Samples received in good condition unless otherwise noted.
