"'DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF The wet concentrate is dried in flash dryers. Thereafter WASTE GENERATING PROCESS the dry concentrate is fed into the primary furnaces. The

furnace matte is tapped and then granulated (Waterval). The furnace slag is milled and floated to generate a concentrate recycle or stockpiled directly if essentially barren of pay metals.

The furnace matte is then fed to the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) where the matte is upgraded through removal of the iron (and sulfur) to form Waterval Converter Matte (WCM). The WCM is bottom cast, slow cooled over several days, then crushed and forms the final product from the smelters. The converter matte is transported to the Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery

(RBMR) for further processing. The converter slag is granulated and recycled to a Slag Cleaning Furnace (SCF) at Waterval for recovery of the base and precious metals. The SCF matte is recycled to the ACP, while the SCF slag is milled and floated to produce a concentrate recycle.

YES

HAZARDOUS

Slag does not represent chronic or acute aquatic toxicity and is therefore not classified as being Environmentally hazardous in terms of SANS 1 0234. Slag is however classified as having a potential health hazard (skin and eye irritant and single organ toxicity if ingested) to workers exposed without appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

*A process flow chart must be attached to the process description

The following factors and criteria must be used to assess the Impacts of the activities:

Crtterta MAGNnuDE {SeVI!o tY) -- DURAnQfll

MagnitUde . M.gnltude meaures the slz.e of the Impact

Duration Duration refers to the lifetime of the Impact I.e. how long It wllllaat

Scale The scala refers to the extent of the Impact.

Probllblllty The probllblllty refers to the chance of Impact to occur. The pobmtlal Impact could be mo.t II kaly to occur, unlikely, etc. Assessment of Sianificance of impact

Significance rating of the potential impacts illustrates the importance of the impact itself. The size of area affected by pollution may be extremely high but the significance· of this effect is dependent on the concentration or level of pollution in that area. In order to determine the significance of impact, the following method was used:

Significance Points (SP) =(Magnitude+ Duration+ Scale) x Probability

The values of SP are then ranged as follows:

Rating Description

SP>eo Indicates high An Impact which could influence the decision about whether or environmental not to proceed with the activities regardless of any possible significance mitigation.

. SP30- Indicates moderate An Impact or benefit which is sufficiently important to require 60 environmental management and which could have an influence on the

significance decision unless it is mitigated. SP<30 Indicates low Impacts with little real effect and which will not have an influence

environmental on or require modification of the activities. signifJCance

+ Positive impact I An Impact that is likely to result in positive consequences/effects
