Reflections
Thanksgiving-a time to think about all the
positives in our lives. I’d first like to put on my
VADA/Nova hat and list some of the things for
which I’m thankful. The first that comes to mind
is our dedicated volunteers-where would we be
without them? To all who gave time to help at
our shows-a huge thank you! Most are VADA/
Nova members but some are friends and relatives
of members. How fortunate we are to have such a
generous group of people.
As membership chairperson, I’m thankful for
those who have been quick to send in their
renewals for 2014. (if you think I’m hinting-
you’re right!) Thank you-it makes my life easier!
As newsletter editor, I’m thankful for the
people who are willing to write and submit
articles. It takes courage to put yourself in print
for all to read! (as I can testify )
On a personal note, I’d like to give thanks, as
always, for my supportive husband. He says he’s
not a horse person but he certainly has learned a
lot in the almost 30 years we’ve had the horses at
home. (My goodness, has it been that long??) He
drags and mows the fields, stacks hay, fixes fenc-
ing and takes care of the “boys” when I have a
meeting or volunteer at a show. He teases a lot
but secretly I think he really does like them.
Then there’s my close circle of friends. There
are four of us who live within a five mile radius,
three of us with horses (the 4th has Cardigan
Welsh Corgis-but she used to have a horse!)
We’re always there for each other and it’s so nice
to have someone to bounce ideas off, cry on a
shoulder, and just be there when you need them.
I’m thankful for all my horses who taught me
many things and brought me great joy. I’ve had
the pleasure of showing hunters and riding an
outside course, competing in judged pleasure
rides, trail riding in some lovely places and
seeing wildlife up close and of course, learning
the art of dressage.
And with that there’s my mostly Shire,
Ziggy- who I am most thankful for.
Those who have followed my columns
know how “head over heels” I am about
him. Unfortunately he’s had some health
issues in the last year and a half and for a
while wasn’t really rideable. I’m seeing
some improvement and we’re able to
“putter” around at home but I don’t expect
to be able to show him again. I’ll be con-
tent if we can just school at home and go
for trail rides. In order to keep him from
being bored, we took up ground driving
recently. What a comedy act we were at
first-looking like a pair with a giant
hangover as we wove our way around the
ring. However, we now have our learner’s
permit.☺ We can stay along the rail, turn
down the center line reasonably straight,
do an approximation of a serpentine, and
our best exercise-the bow-tie pattern. I’m
starting to do a little trotting and Ziggy is
still getting used to my being behind him
for that. When he finally does pick up the
trot I really have to move to keep up. He’s
certainly more fun than a treadmill!
I hope you have people/things in your
life which when you reflect on them it
makes you smile.
Wishing you and your families a very
Happy Thanksgiving!

SUMMARY MINUTES
VADA/Nova Board Meeting
October 14, 2013– Morven Park Lounge The meeting commenced at 7:27 p.m. There were
fourteen Board members present and two excused.
The September minutes were accepted by the Board.
Treasurer's report: This does not reflect Morven Park’s bill for
approximately $16,000 for the September licensed show as it just
arrived. As of September 30, 2013 we had $91,968.62 in the regular
account and $7,147,46 in the special account. Expected expenses
coming up are the ribbon order for 2014 as well as the prizes for year-
end awards.
Licensed Shows: The September expense report isn’t finished as all
the bills have not yet come in.
Schooling Shows: We identified all the issues which have come up in
having to postpone the Oct. 12 schooling show at Compass Rose (due
to flooding) and reschedule it for Oct. 26. Most of it revolved around
how to let people qualify for the championship show and still give the
champion secretary time to schedule it. It was decided to keep the
closing date as Oct. 21 and we worked out a plan for those who might
qualify on Oct. 26. Also, we were not reopening the Compass Rose
show for additional entries.
We will go with 2 rings although one will finish about 2 hours early.
We picked tentative dates for 2014 schooling shows but these are
contingent on whether or not the facilities are available.
March 22 & 23 Morven Park (in conjunction with a clinic/symposium
on the other day)
May 17 Compass Rose
June 14 Frying Pan Park (need to hear from the facility)
Aug. 9 Morven Park
Sept. 6 Looking Glass
Oct. 11 Compass Rose
Nov. 8 Morven Park (championship show)
Membership: We ended 2013 with 350 members. As of Oct 14 we
have 68 members for 2014.
Elections: Judy is handling the electronic ballot and Barb is doing the
paper ballot which goes to family memberships and those who opted
out of our email list. We plan on sending both out around Oct. 28 with
the voting deadline of Nov. 10 so we have the results by the
November Board meeting.
Education/Clinics: For our unmounted winter clinics we discussed
the idea of once again doing volunteer sessions. Both the scribing and
scoring could have used more time last year. It was suggested to make
one session for just scribing. A second one could combine scoring and
stewarding. We might then invite those who attended the stewarding
session to shadow a steward at the April show (with the steward’s
ok). Alison would also consider doing a session for judges and L
Graduates as this was a popular session last year. Another suggestion
was to have one of the area’s top farriers like Paul Goodness, owner
of Forging Ahead, present a session.
Banquet/Silent Auction: Sheli will be the coordinator with River
Creek. Kelly will take care of the auction the night of the banquet.
Diann C. will handle the RSVP’s and Alison will work on seating/

table requests if we decide to try that. Our biggest need is someone
to handle receiving donated items and keeping track of donor’s
contact information and we’re looking into that. Kelly suggested
that we try using bid numbers instead of people writing their names
-as quite often you can’t read them! We could use old bridle num-
bers from schooling shows.
We’re also looking into a photographer for the evening. Menu
choices were discussed and selected.
Web site, Facebook: There were 518 followers on Facebook and
401 are “engaged”. Jacqui will put together photos to use as a slide
show at the banquet. Barb is pulling photos from past year end
award submissions as well as some from schooling shows.
Meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,

We’re working on putting together
a slide show for our banquet in January.
Most of the photos that we have are from
current or past shows. It would be nice to
include candid photos as well-a cute shot
of your horse in the pasture, you and
your horse just “hangin’ out”, anything
you’d like to see up on the screen!
Send your photos to Jacqui Gerhard at
These will just be used at the banquet
and will not be published.

Member of the Month Our Member of the Month for October is Eva Pede. Originally from Tegernsee (Bavaria), Eva immigrated to the United States as a
young adult. She moved to Virginia in 2010 (from Florida), and became a member of VADA/Nova shortly thereafter. Eva has two children; a
daughter, 25, who is a content specialist with the American Physical Society and a graduate of Florida State University, and a son, 28
who is a CAD/CAM specialist with DAL laboratories in Peoria, Illinois. According to Eva, horses have been in her blood for as long as she can remember. Growing up at the base of a mountain in
Bavaria, there were still farmers who would come into town on their wagons, drawn by Haflingers, that Eva would pester until they
allowed her to drive a bit. There were also lumber operations in those woods, where the horses still pulled individual logs into town for transport. As a child, Eva would save old bread and offer it to the horses as they passsed by her house. When she was a teenager, Eva would ride her bicycle to work at a boarding stable, where she mucked out stalls and led trail rides. Later in life she was introduced to
the sport of dressage when she met her first husband who was a riding instructor in Germany. Currently Eva leases a wonderful schoolmaster, named Rhapsody, owned by Teja Johnson. According to Eva, Rhapsody is the
absolute epitome of what she wants in a horse; they can work or they can play but in the end they always have fun. Although Eva has owned a few horses in her life, the most memorable for her was her black mare named Raven. Unfortunately, after reaching 4th level, life intervened, and with a
heavy heart Eva was forced to sell Raven to a wonderful buyer in Illinois. Howev-er after 6 months the buyer contacted Eva to let her know that she and Raven weren’t meshing as hoped and she wanted to send her back. Unfortunately the
money was spent and Eva was in no position to buy her back. Understanding the special relationship between Eva and Raven, this very special buyer gave Raven
back to Eva. After that, Raven and Eva spent another wonderful 15 years together until Raven passed away at the age of 28.
When volunteering for VADA/Nova, Eva’s favorite position is that of a
scribe. Although she does not compete anymore, she finds talking with the judges very interesting. She really enjoys hearing their stories and listening to their viewpoint as they are judging. When not riding or volunteering for VADA/Nova,
Eva is an avid hiker, Burke Lake being one of her favorite areas.
