Can you believe it’s almost December? Where has the year gone? Those of you who follow my columns know how I complain about hot weather but this year it wasn’t quite as bad-no drought, no long stretches of 90+ degree days. I actually survived! And haven’t we had a lovely fall (with the exception of the monsoon that hit our October schooling show). So here comes winter and rather than hibernate, VADA/Nova is gearing up for our annual Banquet and Volunteer Recognition which seems to get bigger and better each year. You’ll find details about it on pages 4 and 5. I’d like to thank those of you who got your awards packets in to me before Thanksgiving. It helps when I receive them early so that there isn’t such a mad rush at the end. So far, all of you have had very organized, easy to read submissions, which makes my job easier. I know the awards program can be a little confusing as we offer so many categories, but you did a fine job. And our banquet wouldn’t be com- plete without the Silent Auction -one of the highlights of the evening. The items to bid on run the gamut from horsey stuff to jewelry to gift certificates to artwork. See page 7 for information on how to donate items. SUMMARY MINUTES

VADA/Nova Board Meeting

Nov. 11, 2013– Morven Park Lounge

The meeting commenced at 7:15 p.m. There were

fourteen Board members present, two excused and one guest.

October minutes were accepted by the Board

Treasurer’s Report: Dilly reported that as of 11/11/13 the bank

statement had not been received. The non- reconciled balance

was $75,408.05 (after expenses from the September Licensed

show); the Special account balance has not changed.

Board Elections: The ballots have been counted. Jacqui

Gerhard did not run this year but all other 2013 Board members

will be returning for 2014. Alex Jackson has been voted in as a

new Board member.

Schooling shows: Michelle reported that even though the

Compass Rose show had to be delayed, we only lost 3 riders

from the original entries; the show operated at a $360 loss since

the Porta-Potties had to be paid for twice, and at this show, we

provide lunch to the competitors . There were many great

costumes. Barb Zulick graciously donated the printing costs.

Sheli discussed ways to get entries up again for school-

ing shows, since this year was “light” compared to past years.

She suggested being proactive in letting potential competitors

know what they get with VADA/Nova shows- good footing,

good facilities, free snacks, great ribbons, the Championship

show, etc.

The Championship show went very well. It was a short

day for both rings as the number of riders for each class was

lower than in the past. The photographer is having website

problems and doesn’t know when her pictures will be available

from both the Compass Rose & Championship shows. Riders

should contact Katherine Holl directly. The management team

for the Championship show did a stellar job- particularly

Stephanie Corum. This was her first time as secretary for the

championship show, and she was in the middle of moving at

the time.

The Board discussed rewording the refund policy.

Raising the late fee to $10 (which is in line with other shows in

the area) was discussed and accepted.

Licensed Shows: Alison is working on signing up the judges

for the 2014 show season. New FEI tests have been added;

Alison & Dianne Boyd will work out how to add these to the

prize lists and will bring their ideas to a future Board meeting.

Membership: Barb reported that so far for 2014 we have 103

members. This is about where we were this time last year.

Education/Clinics: Alison suggested dates and topics for the

Winter clinics. A topic and presenter is still needed for the

January clinic

Dates:

Jan. 30 (alt. 2/6)

Mon. Feb.17(alt. 2/20)- Judge’s Round Table session at

the Leesburg Best Western

Sat. Mar. 8- Stewarding/scoring clinic at Leesburg Best

Western, 1-4 p.m.

Sat. Mar. 22- Fix-a-Test at Morven Park

Banquet: Sheli says everything is moving along regarding the

organization of the banquet. The Board agreed on the kids’

menu. Bridle numbers will be used for the bidding in the

Silent Auction. Sheli is Banquet coordinator. Holy Wilmoth

will coordinate the gathering of Silent Auction items, and

Kelly will coordinate the Auction at the Banquet.

Diann Carpenter will handle the RSVP’s; Dianne Boyd will

be the photographer, and Diann Landau will again be emcee

[too many Diann’s!] Jacqui Gerhard will be gathering photos

for a slide show. We will ask Al King to put the equipment

together and set up and run the show at the dinner.

The December meeting will begin with our holiday

celebration. Pot luck to start at 6:30 followed by the regular

meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 9:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Diann Landau

From the Manager…….

-Michelle Lachner

Due to unrelenting, torrential downpours the schooling show at Compass Rose Farm originally

scheduled for October 9 was rescheduled to be held on October 26. As this was the final opportunity to qualify for

the Schooling Show Championship, competitors who qualified were allowed to enter the Championship show after

the original closing date had passed. Fortunately most entrants were able to compete on the new date.

It is amazing to see the costumes that our members come up with for the costume competition and even more

amazing that their equine companions are so tolerant of their embellishments. Many competitors participated,

sporting costumes ranging from a park police officer, Che Guevara complete with Cuban cigar, to an Indian scout.

Categories for the costume contest were: best horse and rider combination, most outrageous, most creative, and

judge’s favorite. It was tough to come up with the winners as there were so many great costumes. The winners were:

Maddie Moore as a cheerleader (best horse and rider combination), Ursula Moore as an Egyptian pharaoh (most

outrageous), Candy Allen as the Cat in the Hat (most creative). Since there were two judges, there were two favorites:

Caroline York, a clown, and Heather Novak who was the sun riding high above her horse, the earth.

BJ Lachner was a fabulous grill master for lunch. Competitors and spectators enjoyed hot dogs and hamburg-

ers hot off the grill. Yum!

We were fortunate to have as our judges, Lea Ann Hansen and Aviva Nebesky, who endured frosty

temperatures in the morning (and the resultant thaw of the frost on the roofs, raining onto the tests!) and a biting wind

in the afternoon. Patty Knight really helped as the assistant show manager and scorer. Barb Zulick was a super show

secretary and ably handled the demands of scheduling two rings—twice! The volunteers were super—

Jessie Ginsburg and Ann Corrigan, scribes; Adele Dennis, Karoline Morris, Rose Flanery, and Marguerite Teska, ring

stewards; Sally O’Dwyer, Michele Cappello, Susan Whitmire and Caroline York, runners; and Barb Pickering who

scored with Patty. Thank you for giving your time to VADA/Nova.

As always, thank you to Judy Grass and the wonderful staff of Compass Rose Farm who worked very hard

before, during and after the show to ensure it was a complete success.

Editor’s Note: And a huge thank you to Manager Michelle Lachner, who, after finding Compass Rose underwater the day before the original

date, managed to put everything together for the new date.

Member of the Month This month’s Member of the Month is Joan Gaidos. Joan is an

Environmental Scientist who lives in Berryville with her dog, 2 cats

and 2 horses- Blue (retired) and Will, her riding horse. Both horses are

American Saddlebreds.

Joan started riding when she joined 4H at age 10. She didn’t own a

horse, so she rode whatever was available. She worked with an American Saddlebred breeder in Warrenton at age 14, where she

not only learned how to ride but everything else that went into a working farm- from making hay & handling young horses to

tending wounds. She went to shows that had a bit of everything, and attributes her “education” to Nancy Weik, who owned the

farm.

Joan settled in Leesburg about 10 years ago. She mostly trail rode her older gelding, Blue, until arthritis started slowing

him down. She started looking for her next horse- something she could do more dressage with because she wanted to learn more

about it. She loves how it refines the communication between horse and rider.

She stayed with Saddlebreds, as she knows their personalities and tempera-

ments. She found Will (aka Revelation’s First Prophet); he had no real dressage

training but had a big friendly personality, 3 lovely gaits and “he made me

smile”! She started working with Wanja Gerlach, and joined VADA/Nova to

meet other dressage enthusiasts in the area, and to keep abreast of the latest

news and learning opportunities.

With Wanja’s help, Will earned good scores in his first year showing at

First Level, including a few national and local awards (including a USDF

All-Breeds Award in 2012). In 2013 Will did well again at Third/Fourth

Levels, under Wanja’s guidance- including 2013 USDF All-Breeds Champion

at Third Level. Joan says they still have a lot to learn, but that the horse still

makes her smile.

Joan’s favorite job at shows is the pre-show set-up; she really gets to

see the nuts and bolts of running a show. She has also been a runner and a

scorer, and loves volunteering because of the people she meets.

Nominees:

Amanda Harper ____

Nicky Vogel _____

Amanda Harper (Central): (Nominated by Nancy Sheaffer, Central)

Amanda has served as VP of VADACC for 2013. As President, I and the Board have enjoyed and appreciated Amanda’s pure heart and

desire to SERVE and encourage everyone to not give up on their dreams in dressage. If you ask any member of our Chapter everyone would

tell you how inspirational Amanda is. While at Recognized Shows or Schooling Shows Amanda is always out amongst the riders looking for

opportunities to assist them AND always with words of encouragement. I personally have been motivated and inspired by Amanda when I

wanted to give up, or back out of showing or discouraged when the progression I was expecting wasn’t happening. Amanda has sent me

emails and texts with wonderful words of encouragement to help me rethink my thinking and to continue on! Amanda will always give me a

big hug and say “Don’t give up you never know what tomorrow may bring!”

Awarding Amanda Harper the Shel Gafford Memorial she will be an inspiration to the 1000+ members here in Virginia and,

especially our own membership within Central Chapter, to pursue their dressage dreams at any and all levels.

Nicky Vogel (VADAF): (Submitted by Sharon Kipping, VADAF)

Nicky Vogel - judge, trainer, teacher, competitor, consummate horsewoman, mentor, confident, and friend. These are just some of the

adjectives that describe Nicky. She's been a strong asset and driving force behind the VADA-Fredericksburg Chapter for over a decade.

During that time, Nicky has performed the duties of President for three years; acted as Chief Executive Officer of the VADAF's Rose Mount

Licensed Show for six years; been the Youth Team's coach numerous times, and generously given of her time to hold a public youth clinic at

her farm sponsored by VADAF.

While President, Nicky led our club with the ultimate goal of making it a friendlier and more sustainable organization. She has a

unique ability to recognize the talents of various members within the club and then allow those persons to utilize that talent to their full

potential. During her Presidency, membership steadily increased.

As Chief Executive Officer of our Licensed Show, she has continually made improvements to the show. As a direct result of her

leadership and guidance we now always have a waiting list of competitors. She works tirelessly to make sure that, in her words, "every 'i' is

dotted and every 't' is crossed". Volunteers consistently come back to assist Nicky with the show due to her passion and insistence that the

show be "competitor friendly". Because of her dedication to the show, our club has been able to raise funds that have allowed VADAF to

sponsor numerous free clinics to our general membership.

Nicky is a strong competitor, but always makes the time to help her fellow competitor using her judge's eye and expertise. Quick to

help bolster a fellow competitor's faltering spirits with kind words, Nicky is the consummate example of good sportsmanship.

Schooling Show Championship -Michelle Lachner

The morning of the Championship Schooling Show dawned; the weather was cold and sunny, perfect for the

culmination of many competitors’ show year! This final VADA/Nova event was held at Morven Park on

Saturday, November 9. It was wonderful to see the beautifully turned out teams of horse and rider.

The comradeship and courtesy of the riders was an inspiration.

There are many to thank for the success of the show. First of all the judges, Susan Carr-Davis and

Cathy Tucker-Slaterbeck, for their thoughtful comments and insights. Stephanie Corum who scheduled the show

under time constraints because of the delay to the Compass Rose show, our final qualifying show. And she did it all

while relocating her home! As always, we had a crack team of volunteers. Barb Pratt, the assistant show manager,

gave unstintingly of her expertise and time. Thank you also to: Kristen Brown and Peyton Morris, scribes;

Dilly Jackson and Lindsey Wagner, ring stewards; Alex Jackson, Betsy Dove, and Dave Whitford, runners;

Karoline Morris and Barb Pickering, scorers; and Louise Cotulla and Laura Whitford, awards.

VADA/Nova also thanks our very generous sponsors: Brenda and Kevin Chinn donated both the Champion

and Reserve prizes, and Pam Milner for her donation which was used to purchase the wonderful horse treats.

Now competitors, there is a whole winter to consider the past show season and plan your training to improve

the rider-horse partnership! The first show will be at Morven Park in March. Check the Green Book for the exact

date and the dates of all our schooling shows. See you then!

Editor’s Note: Once again a huge thank you to Michelle Lachner who was a first time manager for this Championship show.

Great job!
