1. WELCOME / WELKOM

Welcome & Editorial

Welcome to our “Transport Edition” of the

eNONGQAI. In this issue we will focus on

the development and usage of the motor

vehicle in police work.

Originally the South African Police was a

Mounted Force and followed the British

traditions. The lanyard and whistle cord is

on the right, while the mounted sergeants

wore their chevrons only on the right sleeve.

Foot sergeants wore their chevrons on both

arms.

Welkom

Hartlik welkom by hierdie uitgawe wat

fokus op die meganiese vervoer in die Suid-

Afrikaanse Polisiemag.

Aanvanklik was die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisie

‘n beredemag; bestaande uit berede en

voetmanne - die sg Bosluise en Magalle.

Die Britse tradisies word in die SA

Polisiemag gevolg: nl berede sersante dra

hul strepe slegs op die regter mou en die

fluitjiekoord is ook regs. Sersante in die

voetpolisie het strepe op beide arms gedra.

Page 4: eNONGQAI

After the Second World War the South

African Police Force became more

mechanised. Camels and horses were

disposed of. Horses were only kept in

rugged mounted areas and for ceremonial

purposes. The Police College continued to

train mounted troops.

Mechanical vehicles and bicycles were the

main type of transport in the police; the Air

Wing only came during the middle 1960’s.

When South Africa became a republic on 31

May 1961 the SA Police Force took to the

new blue and grey uniforms.

The Mounted traditions stayed in the force

and sergeants only wore one chevron on the

right sleeve. The whistle cord and

remained on the right side.

In this issue we will take a look at three

types of vehicles used by the South African

Police.

hoofsaaklik in Transkei en ander

onherbergsame plekke gebruik.

Meganiese vervoer, hoofsaaklik voertuie en

trapfietse is deur die polisiemag gebruik om

elke punt in Suid-Afrika te polisieer.

Perde het egter ‘n groot rol in seremoniële

geleenthede gespeel. Die polisiekollege het

jaarliks berede troepe opgelei.

Met die koms van die nuwe

uniforms op 31 Mei 1961 is die

tradisies gevolg. Sersant het toe slegs op een

arm strepe gedra.

In hierdie uitgawe gaan ons slegs kyk na

drie tipe voertuie wat deur die SA Polisie

aangewend was.

Dagboek die jaarlikse skaapbraai wat DV op 15 September plaas

vind ten bate van die Oud-SAP-Lede Liefdadigheidstrust.

Ons soek ‘n paar skape en mooi geskenke om tydens die braai te

verkoop ....

e-Nongqai se vriende het verlede jaar twee tafels vol gesit. Kan ons

daarop verbeter hierdie jaar?

The above picture was taken on 21st of May 1946 in front of Compol Building. The Jeep left

Pretoria for the Bushveld. Note the dust jacket worn by the officer. They are travelling with

blankets! No expensive Subsistence & Travel Claims in those days after the war. SAP- photo.

It is noted that all these vehicles have “TA” i.e. Benoni

Registration numbers. After purchase they could have

been sent to the Police Mechanical School, Benoni from

where they were issued for Coin-duties.
