All police on the front line will eventually be given the high-powered stun guns (right) in a new eraof law enforcement.
Uniformed members in Geelong and Ballarat will be the first equipped with the controversialweapons in a "phased implementation".
Ending years of debate over whether the force should be given the shock devices that deliver apainful 50,000-volt charge to immobilise people, police are today expected to reveal key details of
the plan. It's believed police will be armed with a double-shot Taser capable of hitting a person with two
separate charges of electricity.
The back-up shot can be fired if a suspect is not stopped by the first.
The Tasers will have an automatic five-second shut-off mechanism.
Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said: "Victoria Police is not able to provide any further detailregarding Tasers at this time and we will be making an announcement regarding them in the next
few days." But a senior source said the "phased implementation" would begin in regional centres and soon
spread state wide.
"It's not a trial. It's the start of Tasers in Victoria," the source said.
"This is the first part of the roll-out, it will start in those centres and then move everywhere else."
The cost for thousands of "electronic control devices" - either the Taser X2 used by US policeforces or the Taser X26 used by the US Army - could be up to $12 million.
Features listed on a US website for the water-proof Taser X2 are improved accuracy "to take theguesswork out of aiming", an improved power magazine for up to 500 firings and "back-up shot

I would suggest that drugs are the main culprit and whytasers are needed. Other reasons are mental illness.Perhaps that could be solved by reverting back to thedays of hospitals for mentally ill which affects a large part
of the population at times. Work pressure, sackings, stress are all caused by societys incessant need for
higher levels of performance. Also, there are theincompetent state governments who wont see into the
future as to the effects of the legislation that they pass
