Miss Sarajevo –2011, Karmelina Martina

Miss Sarajevo, a sofa designed by Karmelina Martina in 2011, represents the meeting of two distant worlds, two (only) apparently contrasting geographic and cultural opposites. This “borderline” sofa has the spontaneous, functional simplicity of folk tradition; of industrial design, it has the smart solutions of mass production and material quality and performance. An Italo–Bosnian designer, Karmelina pours her past into a contemporary design and reinstates its positive value. Its female energy re–emerges, making tangible the hope which U2 and Luciano Pavarotti sang in Miss Sarajevo as a protest against the horrors of a war which fortunately is now behind us.

Folk tradition merges with

In this sofa, an ideal world returns to life in the memory of salons permeated with the aroma of Turkish coffee, of rooms decorated with lace ornaments, of jambolijas (shaggy wool blankets), of carved wooden tables and the endless variety of handmade tablecloths and napkins covering them

The design is sleek and understated. A light, linear frame holds the large seat and backrest cushions. The sofa’s simple look has the added touch of the backrest cushions inspired by the Bosnian tradition of covering sofas with a length of fabric richly decorated with embroidery and other ornamentation.Ornamental beauty and practicality, identity and memory. The designer intended the cushion cover as a complementary personality, a way of introducing change, of adapting to times and contexts. The embroidered fabric is not just an ordinary cover. With its intimate, domestic nature, it is rather a garment that reveals a world and a way of life, a sign of cultural belonging.

Sarajevo

Capital of modern Bosnia–Herzegovina, Sarajevo is a symbol of the integration and coexistence of different cultures and peoples. Despite the long, painful siege during the war in the former Yugoslavia, today Sarajevo is once again a city of vibrant mentality and unique beauty. A city where the four great religions manage to coexist, a hundred metres one from the other, in the city centre. Catholic and Orthodox Christians, Jews and Muslims live together peacefully in mutual respect in Sarajevo, thereby showing the whole world that the “clash” of civilisations can be turned into a pacific, constructive dialogue, into cultural and spiritual enrichment, into an opportunity for progress.

There are many things that make Sarajevo unique: the Gazi Husrev–beg mosque with its 45–m minaret dominating the market below it, and the library,

which houses thousands of Arab, Turkish and Persian manuscripts; the covered markets, the many

Ottoman–style homes, the Latin Bridge. A European, cosmopolitan city,

an ancient boundary line between East and West.

“Udine (Moroso) – Sarajevo (home). 699 km. This is the distance in kilometres between the two worlds which coexist in me.” Seventeen years spent in Sarajevo and 17 in Italy, including many in Udine, hovering between East and West, between future and memory.

Karmelina Martina was born in Sarajevo but lives and works in Udine where, since 2006, she has supervised Moroso’s product development and manufacturing process management department. In 2001 she obtained a degree with top marks in industrial design in Florence. She studied under Vanni Pasca, Isao Hosoe, Paolo Deganello and other internationally renowned designers. Together with Moroso she decided to follow, like the great masters of the past, a radical path in the design world by combining the empirical expertise which she acquired from the company’s vast know–how with an ongoing, everyday intellectualdialogue. This led to her personal approach to design centred around a fine balance of industrial qualities and the object’s conceptual nature.
