Inferring meaning class assignmenta. Distribute and discuss literary analysis handouts (theme, conflict,

i. Ask students to silently consider the image, silently taking notes
1. Notes should include theme (what ideas is the artist trying to explore), conflict (what ideas are in opposition to each other), characterization (what inferences can be made about the people), and author commentary (what is the author’s opinion about the ideas/characters in the image)
a. Discuss differences between theme and main ideaii. Think/Pair/Share: Students should attempt to summarize the
image (as if it is a short story)1. Students should not fictionalize the image; instead,
students should summarize the events depicted in the image (What is happening?)
2. Student share image summary as a classiii. Using their partners, summary, and notes, students should
attempt to identify as many different elements in the image that they believe are meaningful (e.g. dead tree, white school house)
iv. Students should attempt to infer relationships between these elements (e.g. white school house and black smoke)

Warm Up: Parts of Speech: Write down the eight parts of speech (use Writer’s Notebook)Due: Inferencing Meaning Handout (Zero Sheets)Activities:
MODEL: HOW TO ANNOTATE AS YOU READ (handout) Read “Blues Ain’t No Mocking Bird” on your handout, annotate based on
instruction. Annotations should include thoughts, devices, definitions, connections,
interpretations, etc. Do not simply think about WHAT is happening, think about WHY it is
important – look for connections/relationships) Think about the overall theme(s) of the story. Keep in mind that you will have an analytical quiz over this short story this
week.
HOMEWORK: Finish reading “Blues,” and take notes: think about theme,

Now, decide which of those three is most essential to the story and underline it. Turn to your neighbor and share the most essential sentence, phrase, or word, and explain why you chose it.
