Time is a Gift
History of the Erwin Sattler Clock Manufactory
1903
Watchmaker Heinrich Sattler, grandfather of Erwin Sattler, received an imperial German patentfor his design of a perpetual calendar.
1920Sculptor Oscar Schnfeld founded a company in Munich that reproduced valuable
antique-style clocks and realized Schnfelds own artistic ideas.
1958Founding of the Erwin Sattler company. Watchmaker Erwin Sattler acquired Oscar Schnfelds
antique-style clock collection, adding many new high-quality clocks over the ensuing twenty-five years. The high-quality table and wall clocks were in part hand- carved and gold- plated, and then skillfully painted
by the hand of Erwin Sattlers wife, Viola.
1979The first wall regulators were manufactured at the end of the 1970s,
garnering fame for the company beyond Germanys borders.
1984The first precision pendulum clocks containing Sattlers own movement were realized in collaborationwith master watchmaker Robert Schleich. Special features included a completely jeweled movement
with sweep seconds and a gridiron pendulum.
1984Watchmaker Richard Mller started work as an independent traveling salesman
for Erwin Sattler in Germany and Austria.
1989Stephanie Sattler-Rick, Erwin Sattlers daughter, joined the companys management team
and has since overseen purchasing, sales, and the companys finances.
1990Manufactory development: the first computerized lathes and milling machines were purchased under the directionof Richard Mller, who was responsible for the development and quality of movements from this point onward.
1992Erwin Sattler was turned into a limited partnership. The owners included Erwin Sattler as general partner
and Stephanie Sattler-Rick and Richard Mller as limited partners.
2002Erwin Sattler OHG (general partnership), clock manufactory, was founded. The owners of this company
are Stephanie Sattler-Rick and Richard Mller. At this point, more than twenty Sattler movementswere being produced in a production depth greater than 90 percent.
2003The subsidiary Mller & Sattler Uhrenbausatz GmbH, a limited company
producing do- it- yourself kits, was founded.
2006The first precision watch winders for automatic wristwatches were manufactured, equipped with ball-bearing,
precision pendulum clock gear trains and unique electronic control systems. The new, autonomous Erwin Sattlermanufactory building located at Lohenstrae 6 in Grfelfing, near Munich, was completed.
2008Erwin Sattler celebrates its fifty-year anniversary.
The Erwin Sattler manufactory celebratesits fiftieth anniversary this year.
The anniversary not only presentsan occasion for us to celebrate,
it also offers us a chance to presentconnoisseurs of our company special editions
of clocks in limited editions, each decoratedwith an anniversary diamond.

Anniversary Model Trilogie All in One
Highlight 1 of the Trilogy:Rotalis Precision Watch Winder
The gear train of the Rotalis 1 watch winder is located
between the two movement plates. Its design and
technology corresponds to that of all other Sattler
watch winders, so it is freely programmable via a USB
interface. It is extremely quiet and once the winding
program is completed, the watch is left in a vertical
position so that it can be read perfectly. In addition, the
clock is illuminated by LED lamps, keeping it beautiful
for the eye at all times.
It is at this point that you may ask why the Munich- based
clock manufactory with its particularly high demands ondesign, quality, and realization of its precision timepieces
has entered this fairly unusual field of production. The
answer is actually quite simple: an exclusive rotator
device such as the Rotalis model displays many
parallels to the fine instruments that Sattler traditionally
manufactures.
This begins with the gold-plated precision gear train for
transmitting energy between the motor and the
wristwatch support. Like on Sattlers pendulum clocks,
the clearly visible gear wheels are milled from hardbrass using a highly precise pitch process and then
gold-plated. The arbors of the drums, the gear wheels,
and the three front wheels each rotate on ten stainless
steel ball bearings. This prevents friction and minimizes
annoying drive noise. Moreover, these attributes ensure
perfect, unmistakable aesthetics.
This combination underscores the companys great diversity: a Sattler precision table clock
with fifteen days of power reserve combined with a programmable Sattler Rotalis watch winder
and a world premiere the first Sattler wristwatch.
This package is only available as a complete set limited to fifty pieces.
The wristwatchs case is available in a choice of solid white, yellow, or red gold.
All of the Trilogys gear wheels and the dial holders are gold-plated
to match the chosen case version.
Protecting the Trilogy is a large mineral crystal dome that moves up and down
via electric motor and spindle when activated by a switch hidden in the case.

Naturally, the Trilogys Rotalis watch winder is precisely set
to the Sattler wristwatch regarding revolutions per day and
rotational direction right from the day of delivery. Of course,
it can also be individually programmed to accommodate any
other automatic wristwatch as well. Its base is formed by the
patented new Sattler Beluwo watch winder technology.
For the first time, collectors are able to take over the optimal
settings for their valuable watches from an enclosed watch
data base and convey it to the memory of the watch winder
via a USB interface. Thus, questions about which movement,
which rotational direction, and the number of revolutions
needed each day are now a thing of the past.
The intelligent control simulates the course of a day using
a fourteen-hour active phase and a ten-hour passive phase.
The rotations needed per day are optimally portioned out
during the active phase.
The Sattler watch can be found in the best location: the
center of the Trilogy where it is optimally supplied with energy
by Sattlers Rotalis watch winder.
Not only are the Mechanics Exceptional, so are the Intelligent Electronics.

Fifty years of experience in precision clockmaking and twelve
master clock- and watchmakers who prove that they are able
to make timepieces for generations to come every day provide
an excellent backdrop for the first Sattler wristwatch. Ofcourse, Erwin Sattler is not able to make a complete watch
movement using its machines for clocks.
Thus, Sattler chose the reliable ETA Valjoux 7750 caliber as
the base for the Sattler wristwatch project.
Next, Erwin Sattler was able to win the support of watch-
makers Maria and Richard Habring from Austria. Habring
Uhrentechnik rediscovered, developed, and patented
the jump second complication, and is now making the
technical highlight forSattler in a limited edition
of 150 pieces.
Based on the solid and
reliable gear train of the
ETA Valjoux 7750, the
Sattler wristwatch movement
Highlight 2 of the Trilogy: Sattler Wristwatch
is lavishly decorated with perlage and blued screws. The jump
second subgroup and the dial train for the hour display of the
regulator arrangement are completely new.
The base movement for the watch and its components are
the only parts made in Switzerland. All the other parts, such
as the case, dial, rotor, strap, and buckle, are strictly made
in Germany according to Sattlers motto.
One of the most valuable components making up this
movement, visible through the transparent case back, is a
solid 18-karat gold rotor handmade by master engraver
Jochen Benzinger for the automatic winding. He exquisitely
engraved the company's initials E and S as well as the
Sattler hands found inthe logo into the white
gold rotor.

The watch displays the typical face of a Sattler precision
pendulum clock with the corresponding bezel and a classic
solid silver regulator dial containing the hour display in the
lower half and the extraordinary jump second display in
the upper half. Conventional hands cannot be used with such
a dial, of course. The hands were therefore precisely
miniaturized, corresponding to a pendulum clock, and then
polished and blued by Sattlers clockmakers.
In order to demonstrate Sattler's competence and to provide
for future service work, Sattlers watchmakers carry out the
final assembly of the movement and do quality control on
the finished watch.
Like the companys precision clocks, the Sattler wristwatch
is created to display the time in the purest manner possible.
Thus, these timepieces do without other complications such as
the date and other additional functions.
Finally, the fully assembled Sattler wristwatch undergoes a
fifteen-day chronometer test at the Wempe observatory in
Glashtte, after which it is provided with a certificate.
The end product is a premium wristwatch with a beautiful,
clear face that is achieved by the simple, fine silver dial
with its regulator display.

Highlight 3 of the Trilogy : Nautis Series Precision Clock
The table clock, equipped with a horizontal regulator display,
which is completely new for Sattler, is found directly above
the base. To achieve this, the movement of the Sattler Nautis
model was extravagantly redesigned so that it is now
positioned below the watch winder and between the plates.
It can be easily admired through the filigreed crystal design
of the Trilogy case.
Highlights of the movement include the milled, gold-plated
gear train, set in twelve ball bearings and eleven jewels
to minimize friction. Because the tension of the mainspring is
naturally not even during the power reserve of fifteen days,
Sattlers clockmakers used a method also applied by
John Harrison in the 1700s: a steel cable and fusee to keep
energy constant. A power-maintaining mechanism is also
present to supply the movement with energy, even while it
is being wound. Sattler chose a regulator dial with an
off-center 24-hour hand to indicate the time, just like those the
famed Breguet chronometers were outfitted with 200 years
ago. The subsidiary seconds display on the right, the sweep
minute hand, and the date scale hovering over the minutedisplay complete the loving arrangement of important
displays. Furthermore, the power reserve is displayed on a
semi-circular arc at top left.
Like on the wristwatch, all the dials here are glass pearl-
blasted and silver-plated. Each hand is lavishly domed and
blued. A fine, rhodium-plated regulating system, known as the
echappement, can be seen through an opening in the plates
with its screw balance and blued balance spring.

This decorative timepiece underscores the ability of Sattlers
clockmakers to make table clocks that are as precise as
they are elegant.
The filigreed brass design of the case consists of a total of
eleven finely milled and polished parts that are screwed
together. The top and bottom of the case are composed
of two highly polished, black granite plates.Three anti-reflective crystals allow a view of the
high- quality, precision Sattler manufactory caliber.
Anniversary Model: Stella The Small, Precious Table Clock
Thus, in addition to the mechanics that are really worth seeing,
the unique dial is also an eye-catcher: its base is formed by
a plate that has been guilloch by hand. A cutaway in the
dial at 12 o'clock allows a view of the screw balance.
A grained, silver-plated numeral frame is screwed to the
guilloch dial; the whole construction achieves a three-
dimensional effect. The numbers, markers, and polishedhands are crafted in brass plated with rose gold
(or yellow gold, or rhodium, respectively). The
overall appearance of the clock subtly underscores
its high quality.
On the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, Erwin Sattler presents
the table clock Stella (Latin for star) in a limited edition of 150 pieces.
This is the smallest table clock in Sattlers program, but it is very valuable:
corresponding to the color of the case parts, the gear wheels are platedin rose gold, yellow gold, or rhodium (fifty pieces each).

The precise manufactory caliber with eight days of power
reserve is outfitted with ten milled, gold-plated gear wheels,
fourteen precision ball bearings, eleven jewels, and a
rhodium-plated Swiss echappement (escapement and balance
on a separate plate that is screwed to the movement).
The movement is outfitted with a so-called gear stopwork. This device compensates for the weak front and the strong end
of the elasticity curve, significantly improving the rate.
Winding and hand-setting is done from the back.
The small Sattler clock is delivered in a high-quality black case
in which it can be conveniently transported with two doors
that open.
A table clock such as this builds a bridge from the past to
the future, enriching the present of its owner by creating his
or her personal living space.
Discovering the precious table clock Stella and obtaining one
of the 150 pieces may start a family tradition that can be
continued from generation to generation with pride.

Now that an Erwin Sattler precision pendulum clock ticks
side by side with famed historical timekeeping instruments atthe German Museum in Munich, the high standards set by
the manufactory for itself and its employees are much plainer
for all to see.
Thus there is no better time than during the companys
fiftieth anniversary celebrations to introduce the most unique
precision pendulum clock ever made at the manufactory. The
exceptional element here is the sweep seconds display an
absolute rarity on clocks that displays the complete time from
the center of the dial. The five-part dial is also home to
a special kind of moon phase display, the hand-painted ballof which turns within a funnel, set with small brilliant-cut
diamonds depicting the night sky. The moon phase display
is unusually precise, deviating by less than seven seconds
between each new moon. The exact calculation and design
of the moon phase display originates directly from work
done by Heinrich Sattler in 1903. Calculating
into the future, the moons orb would
only need to be adjusted by one day
after 1,000 years.
The most outstanding feature
of the pendulum clock is
its perpetual calendar,
providing information about
the date, day of the week,
and month, each via a
hand within a recessed
subsidiary dial.
The integrated striking mechanism is a further highlight; in
conjunction with the calendar design it offers a few specialfeatures such as the fact that the energy needed for the
control of the calendar displays comes from the strike train.
In order to achieve this, the calendars 24- hour wheel meshes
with the strike train wheels. The advantage of this design is
that the actual changing of the day, date, and month takes
place during the 12 oclock chime exactly at midnight and
only lasts about fifteen seconds.
The movement therefore only has to supply enough
power to start the strike train, an advantage as far as the
clocks rate precision is concerned. In comparison to a
jumping perpetual calendar, this model has the advantage
of increased functional security since the operating lever is
guided rather than jumping.
As if that werent enough, this anniversary clock also makes
the time audible. A rack strike train, whose dial train
is mounted on the back of the movement,
signals half and full hours with the
aid of a very long tubular gong.
Hidden within a resonancechamber on the back of
the clock, it guarantees a
beautiful, full sound.
Anniversary Model
Opus TemporisPrecision Pendulum Clock with Perpetual Calendar and Striking mechanism
Precisely fifty pieces of this noble timekeeper representing Sattlers complete
know-how are to be manufactured. Serial numbers from 1 to 50 can be found on the dial.
An anniversary diamond shines from between the calendar displays,
giving additional evidence that this is a particularly special clock.

The use of modern technologies such as ball bearings
and classic ruby bearings optimizes efficiency. Solid brass
plates, which can be up to 5 mm thick, and sturdy pillars lend
the frame the necessary stability. The interplay of delicate, decorative polishing with polished stainless steel screws lifts
this movement into the premium class optically as well as
functionally.
The twenty-four elegantly formed gear wheels are milled at the
manufactory in a multi -step process, after which they are gold-
plated to protect them from oxidation. Within the movement,
they are located upon solid, fully hardened steel shafts with
precisely milled pinions. Computer-aided design guarantees
optimum energy transmission within the gear trains.
The attainable rate precision of about one to two seconds per
month is possible primarily because of the fastidious attention
to detail in the design of the pendulum. The pendulum rod is
made of Superinvar, an alloy that is especially resistant to
temperature fluctuation. Sattler maintains its own measurement
laboratory for quality control the only one of its kind in the
world. Here, technicians are able to simulate a wide range
of environmental influences, all within consistent parameters.
The data collected during these controlled experiments
enables rate deviations caused by differences in air pressure
and temperature to be calculated in advance.
Thirteen coats of black varnish and metal inlays finish the case.
The inlay in the back of the clock is crafted in Makassar and
polished to a mirror finish. Cases made of other precious
woods are also available.
Especially in the fast- paced and often anonymous world of the
present, people are looking more and more for a feeling of
security and want their homes to be places of peace and
relaxation. The calming swing of the one-second pendulumand the cozy ticking of the clock create an unsurpassed
feeling of well -being.
Discovering this Sattler clock will lay the foundation for a
family tradition that can be passed on with pride from
generation to generation.
