There are several tools that can be used to engage the student in discussion forums (even during the weeks when there isnt an assigned discussion forum), these tools are as follows: piazza, prulu, and whiteboard. 15

The Discussion Forum

The discussion forum should: (1) model good communication, (2) Although proper grammar is important, do not overemphasize it to the point that you intimidate students and make them reluctant to post, (3) help students understand our role in the discussion forums as facilitators and (4) it may be effective to use color for emphasis.
