SCANNING

- a useful reading style for searching

specific information

Specifically, scanning is often used if you want

to:

• find the answer to a specific question

• seek an appropriate quotation reference or

statement

• locate names in a directory, words in a

dictionary, and prices in a catalogue

Tips for an effective scanning:

1. Know exactly what you are looking for.

2. Anticipate how the information will look.

3. Run your finger down the page or backward

and forward across the page. Let your eyes

follow your finger in seeking a particular piece

of information you are looking for.
