WWRL BRANDING The CommunicationsCouncil is seeking members who would liketo be part of our branding process. For over a year now WWRL eNEWS has been published and last fallwe produced our membership brochure. Drai Bearwomyn gifted thiscommunity immeasurably with her artistry and skills at graphic design, layout and melding it all with the heart of who we are. Month aftermonth she brought forth the theme, imagery, photos and created oureNEWS. For me it is more like a magazine in its lusciousness than anorganizational newsletter. Indeed, we are blessed with acommunication piece that many well established organizations wouldaspire to in its quality and professional appearance.

Drai’s initial conception of eNEWS in layout, colors, typeface and onhas created a ‘look’ for WWRL. As Red Lodge enters into its secondyear it is time for us to agree and finalize our branding, or our ownspecific visual style. This may be a ‘tweaking’ of what already existsor we may look at new concepts.

We are seeking members who would like to be part of this brandingprocess. This is a short-term but very focused commitment, as wewant to have a recommendation to the board by the end of April. One needn’t be an artist to join this process. It is important to havewomen who understand the essential nature of Red Lodge and thedreams and visions carrying her forward as branding is capturing thatessence in physical form.

A little more about Branding….Branding is a marketing term thatrelates to a business or organization’s presentation to others.Typically this is in the form of printed materials such as brochures, flyers, letterhead and so forth. It also carries over into other mediasuch as our website pages, banners we may create, a logo, articleswe write etc. A specific visual style is attained through use of certaintypography, use of color, icons, symbols, use of lines, images andartwork. It is the combination of all these elements that comprise abrand and reflects who we are to the world. It is important that onceour brand has been established that we integrate it into all our visualproducts and that we consistently use it over time. The power ofbranding is in its resonance with our purpose and readers, customers, participants etc come to connect our visual style withwhat we offer and us.

If you are feeling the call to join us, please let me know NOW.Contact me at [email protected]. We will begin ourwork by March 2nd.

What is Woman’s Way of manifestingbusiness? In my imagination, she sings, drums and prays while she envisionssuccess. She cries, laughs, moans (andoh, yes, sometimes meditates) while shemoves through her resistance to change. She pays attention to her heart’sintentions, and listens to what is naturallyalready emerging. She reaches out to hersidebys to witness and celebrate herability to focus on priorities. Then, shelets go of attachment to outcome andbehaves as if her dream is already awaking reality.

All these things and more wereexperienced before, during and after thefour Manifesting Lodges held onSaturday afternoon at the December2006 Red Lodge Wisdom Council.

Manifesting Lodges were originallyconceived by Mary Shackelford andcreated collaboratively by the 2005 RedLodge Working Group as a way to bridgefrom our deeply transformativeceremonies (such as the ongoing sweatlodges that have knit together thefounding members of Red Lodge) to thebusiness world practice of strategicplanning. With over twenty womensigned up for our November 05 WisdomCouncil, we were looking for an intimateand powerful way to break into smallgroups in order to value each woman’svoice and intuitions, move through ourpersonal sludge and call on the universalenergies that inspire collective action.

Looking back, I see that very little hasbeen written about those lodges—whichis understandable. We were pioneering anew form, uncertain how it would work.Kendra, Peg and I volunteered to leadthree lodges. Our focus was to createsacred space, invoke Spirit and call forththe individual prayers and spontaneoussongs, drumming and movement thatwould, hopefully, distill into insightswhen we reconvened as a large group.

Ahead of time, we struggled withdoubts, yet when the time came, ourhearts opened us to trust.

What did we discover? Well, sitting in awindowed room, questing aloud for ourinnermost truth is naturally very differentfrom the womblike darkness of sweatlodge, where voices can emergeanonymously. Some of us were self-conscious, trying to recreate that sense ofinner sanctum in broad daylight. Yet,within the model of our sweat lodges wealso have the roles of firetender, drummers, and supporters outside thelodge who hold sacred space with eyes-wide-open. (See The Sweat Lodge is NotJust for Sweating, Mar 06 eNEWS, andGoddess on Burton Hill, May 06 eNEWS).Perhaps it was knowing that experienceof Lodge that enabled us to shift and godeeper together in daylight. Within thesenew Manifesting Lodges, we werelearning how to synthesize two potentstates of being—going within forinspiration, and having our eyes open toour emerging perspective on service inthe world.

I believe, from what occurred during andafter those first manifesting lodges, thatthey served us very well to awaken ourcapacity to make the kind of whole-brain, spirit-guided decisions that lead tocreating the world we want to live in. Bythat evening we were singing anddancing in the larger group to the wordsof our new purpose statement. The nextmorning, we defined the clear objectivesthat led to all the successes of 2006:establishment of an Interim Board ofDirectors and Councils, the production ofour CD, a terrific Open House, ourapplication for non-profit status, monthlye-news and website!

As we approached our Annual Red LodgeMeeting in December of 06, CouncilPriorities for 07 were already clear. Yet, wecount on the diversity of all who show upto Wisdom Council to guide us and keepus on track with our purpose. So, theBoard decided to use Manifesting Lodgesagain to connect us, spark new inspiration

and clear away any blocks to action. What a pleasure! After a morning filledwith exciting information about CouncilPriorities, mid-afternoon Saturday, inpreparation for these lodges we took ourmeeting break in silence. Womenstretched on the lawn, gatheringpresence, listening to Sahale’s winterquiet. Four lodge leaders, Sarah, Mary,Kendra and I, met in spontaneousmeditation, eyes sparkling withanticipation. Three lodges circled up inthe main house, and a fourth was in themeditation cabin. We all dove in, and apalpable synchronicity was in the air, assongs, drumming and voices interwovethroughout the afternoon.

What emerged when we came backtogether after dinner was fascinating.Heartstorming generated lots of ideasabout how to reach out to the world, and lots of affirmation that we arealready living the dream. We distilled thefollowing list of themes and threads toguide Board decisions in 07:

Themes and Threads for WWRL 07:NETWEAVING: Network andcollaborate with potential sidebyorganizations– interweave our sharedneeds and values.

TALKING CIRCLES: Reach out to meetlocal community needs, for examplewith intergenerational or gender talkcircles.

SUSTAINABILITY CORNER In our every deliberation we mustconsider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.

PACKAGINGAnother Paradigm Shift?

The subject of packaging continues to tugat my heart and mind. That is the subjectwe explore this month. My intent here isto share questions that rise for me and Ido not purport to have answers.

It seems that with the advent of theindustrial age packaging became anecessary tool in the construct ofconsumerism. As folks weredrawn away from the land tolifestyles in larger cities andwork in factories and offices, distribution of food and products, increasing shelf life and vying forconsumer attention necessitated theevolvement of packaging. I don’t see thatthis development occurred with an eye tothe future and the concept of where allthis packaging would go when discarded, whether or not it would biodegrade orhow the amount would increase aspopulations increased.

Well, here we are, 2007, with billions ofpeople, huge cities and warehouse sizedstores packed floor to ceiling withproducts in packages. Our landfills are fulland we are producing more trash than theplanet can accommodate.

What to do? We cannot live here oranywhere in human form without makingsome impact. How do we lessen the sizeof our footprint? Can we?

Did you know that trash that goes in toland fills does not biodegrade even if it isbiodegradable because there is no air or

atmosphere to activate this process?Recycling is a wonderful thing and Iencourage everyone to recycle and beadvocates for expanding recyclingprograms in communities with currentlylimited service. However, recycling alsotakes energy and sometimes the exchangeis not a good payoff for the planet. So wehave to look at re-using.

Studies have shown that to wash and re-use a glass container requires far less

energy use and produces far less wastethan recycling it. Well as we all

know, you only have room for somany jars and plasticcontainers. My daughter tells

me that in Germany people canbring their jars for items like yogurt

back to the store and refill them andthat they do this for several products.

They use more glass and less plastic thanwe do. I found this an intriguing idea andbegin to think about how I might look atwhat products I use and see how I mighteliminate some packaging–either byfinding sources of bulk where I can bringmy own containers for re-use over andover or by just making a choice to simplifyand let go of something that I don’t reallyneed.

How do we as consumers use ourawareness and power to influence changein this arena? How do we letmanufacturers know that we want lesspackaging with more recycled materialsused? I suppose we can start writing tothem. We can begin to look for ways toimpact the marketplace. Is there a bakerywhere we can go and get bread ratherthan buying it off the shelf? Is there adairy where we can get milk and yogurtdirectly? Can we install a water filter in

our home so that we are not buyingbottled water? Can we buy more of theitems that we use in bulk rather than insmaller packages? Can we grow more ofwhat we use/need?

Can we remember to take plastic andpaper and cloth bags with us every timewe shop and use them and re-use themuntil they are spent and ready to recycle?I once read a suggestion somewhere toremove and leave excess packaging in thestore and let the retailers deal with it –thatthey would then communicate tomanufacturers about decreasingpackaging–particularly for non-perishableitems. I don’t know if this is an effectiveplan or not. What do you think? Whatsuggestions/ideas do you have?

Remember thereused to be hardly any organic foodsavailable in mainstream markets–now theyall have sections. We need to begin thepackaging movement.

“The last few decades havebelonged to a certain kind ofperson with a certain kind ofmind—computer programmerswho could crank code, lawyerswho could craft contracts,MBAs who could crunchnumbers. But the keys to thekingdom are changing hands. The future belongs to a verydifferent kind of person with avery different kind of mind—creators and empathizers, pattern recognizers and meaningmakers. These people— artists, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, consolers, big picturethinkers—will now reap society’srichest rewards and share itsgreatest joys.” –Daniel Pink

I read this and exclaim, “It’s abouttime!” YES! It is time for restoration of theplanet. The meaning makers, thedesigners, the empathizers, the big picturethinkers—we have been preparingourselves for this time.

I sit in a board retreat with Woman’s WayRed Lodge leaders and think, “It’s abouttime!” YES! It is time for women to cometogether and co-create like this. My heartrejoices as I feel the energy in the room, asI participate and witness our process inservice to our mission and vision.

This is how I want to be with leaders andlead. This is truly what I have longed for, tobe in company with creative thinkers, visionaries and ordinary yet extraordinarybeings committed to a cause. Andcommitted to a path that involvesembodying the fullness of who we are. Welead from who we are. No pretending, noacting. We learn, we make mistakes, wereveal what is inside, we cry as we heal,we dance and sing. All this while stayingon task, true to our aim.

I have attempted to write this articlenumerous times. I don’t even know whatthis article is “supposed” to be about. Thecreative force has its own song and dance, and I have learned to surrender and let itflow in its time.

One story I tell myself is that my wordspale in comparison to the adoration andreverence I hold for how we be together, that words simply cannot capture the waywe are. It’s one story. There are more.

Another one is that I convey my truth to you in

this moment and time, what is real…andaccept that for what it is. How it is.WWRL’s purpose includes, “To honordeeply all life.”

ALL of it? What about my fear, and thosevoices that tell me I’m not enough, andthose people that irritate me? Can I honorthose parts of life? Personally, I’ve beenwalking with this paradigm for a whilenow. The human experience is vast anddimensional. To honor only certain aspectsnot only limits our experience of what ispossible, it is crazy making in our heads.

This brings me to tell you about one of theriches of the first board retreat of 2007.After staying brilliantly on task withconfirming council priorities and approvingour first ever budget for the year, Mary andKristina unveiled a mystery to us.

It had been on the agenda. “Mystery”.In the spirit of Embracing Paradox, which isone of Red Lodge’s 15 Principles, Mary andKristina invited guest consultants, RaginiMichaels and Narayana Granatelli, to sharethe wisdom of ParadoxManagement.(www.facticity.com) Aparadox is the experience of perceivingtwo things existing together that cannotlogically do so. According to Ragini, paradox is “the Gatekeeper to the realm ofpractical wisdom and inner peace.” Takingit another step and considering how itapplies to organizations, it posed to me aclear avenue for honesty, depth, renewaland expansion.

Let’s take two polarities. Trust and doubt. Both exist. They are a paradox. They don’t

seem to be able to co-exist. So what dowe do with that? Well, depending onyour conditioning, which I’m certain isflavored with some of mine that comesfrom a culture where transparency is notvalued… you might try to deny thedoubt. Hide it.

Yet, what if you accepted it as part ofyour experience? Better yet, what if youconsidered its value, or its strengths?Oooh. That’s juicy.

Sincerely, by the end of the day, I hadturned my attention to a new possibility:doubt carries some strength.

If you are still reading, you might bewondering what those could be. Howabout…slow down, practicediscernment, choose with wisdom and

helping to clarify the real issues. That is thewisdom of doubt.

It is instrumental to truly try on that doubtcan be beneficial, and conversely, trust, asin over-trusting, has its weaknesses. Bothsides of the polarity have value, and mayeven be working in a creative collaborationto help us move along and evolve in life.Wow, yes, I get that peace can come fromthis. Through learning to embrace what is,the suffering ends.

Which brings me back to our purpose: To honor deeply all life.

I pose we try this on for ourselves. Live andembrace the paradox. Honor what is. Trythis for yourself. Next time doubt arises, ask yourself what might be the strengthsof this experience. Watch for the signs thattell you when over- doubting indicates it’snaturally time to open up again to trust. Then, let’s watch how the love and regardwe learn to hold for our whole selves cantouch and transform others. With this kindof big picture thinking, the “keys to thekingdom” are already changing hands.

What I know is that our purpose, visionand principles, keep calling me out, keephoning me and inviting me to becomewho I am meant to become.

Keep becoming who you are meant tobecome.

And please, feel welcome to do so in thecompany of our Red Lodge community. We have much exciting work and play toshare in!

LAUGH AT OURSELVESOne of our 15 Principles is Willingness toPlay and Laugh at Ourselves. On the lastday of the retreat, Kendra brought theseglasses, which were modeled by every oneof us and inspired, in concert with theparadox exploration, this poem from Julia,Conflict Evolution Council Chair.

Paradoxical Principles of Pig Glasses(as recorded by Princessa Julia Bearheart)

The world is crying outFor us to show up.I have been hearing the call of the worldFor a long time.I feel like a fierce warrior,A woman of virtuous veracity,And virtuous ferocity.I feel the competitive spiritOf taking the best of who we areOut into the world.I'll cop to it--I'm a competitive person!Competitiveness enlivens meIn a perspective of fun, humor andCollaboration, competitivenessMoves us toward the goal. There's nothing so sacred That it can't be touched or compromisedAbout who we are.No shame,I'm proud of us,We can do anything--Enliven the feminine,Levitate carrots with ourFaith in laughter!

That Prayer has the greatest power

Which you make with all your might.

It makes a bitter heart grow sweet,A sad heart merry,A poor heart rich,A foolish heart wise,A timid heart brave,A sick heart well,

A blind heart full of sight,A cold heart passionate.

It draws the great God down tothe little heart, It drives the thirstysoul up to the fullness of God.

It brings two lovers together,God and The soul,

In a wondrous place where theyspeak much of love.

Mechthild of Magdeburg was amystic & a Beguine, a member ofa sacred women's movementoutside the church. They lived incommunal houses supporting amutually supportive lifestylebased on prayer and service. She greatly influenced MeisterEckhart and knew of Hildegard of Bingen.

PEOPLEPeople are often unreasonable, illogical, & self-centered; Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight: Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway.

Thank you Melissa Dreaming Bee forsharing your vision and realm ofpossibilities. The Highway Goddess hastraveled with me in another way and yetvery much the same.

I recently went on a road trip andpondered the “Highway Goddess” as Istarted out. It was like she came alivewithin me, and all that was around me.The land, mountains were alive andtalking with me. Sharing their wisdom andlove. The visual beauty that I experiencedwas breathtaking. I felt alive and held, loved deeply as I traveled. She stayed within me and as I traveledinto the Desert of California shebeckoned to come out more fully. Shecalled to be released and share her lovewith all. I was with this and waited, waswith her, was with me.

As I now traveled to Nevada, I knew thatmagic was upon us, that the Goddesswould show herself more vividly. I nowpulled my motorcycle off the trailer andwas ready to open up more fully to theland and air. The Route for the day wasto travel on the old Route 66 betweenNeedles Ca. and Kingman Az.

My heart now expanding in my chest, myeyes wet with tears from the beauty andmy tires planted firmly on the ground, I

set off. As I ride, I noticed the rocks onthe side of the road, many different sizesand shapes. Wait, listen, I can hear themcall. “We are the Goddess”. “Make uswhole, “allow us to breath more life andlove onto the earth”. So, in my mind’seye, all the rocks I saw, I put into figuresof the Goddess. At one special place, Idid physically build a Goddess, with therocks and stones of our mother. It was awonderful moment, I felt whole.

I traveled home with a giant smile allaround me knowing that I made adifference in bringing the Goddess moreinto physical being. Also, more deeplyknowing than ever before, that I do travelwith the Goddess and I am worthy.

So, in your travels, ask the goddess to bewith you and you too may be called tobuild Goddesses along the highwayswith the very stones of our mother’swomb. As others drive by, then they too, will be in the presence of the Goddessand feel her love in the way they canunderstand.

May we share our connection and lovefor the Goddess and Mother Earth as wewalk this lifetime. Blessings in yourtravels,

–Norleen Overman

The stories aremore than a travelogue into poverty, theyare teaching stories where the poor areangels in disguise, holding up a mirror tothe dichotomy of human existence forthose brave souls who dare to look.

Purpose In order to bring humanity outof the sleep of selfishness and into anawakened heart and life, Gary Smithshares the stories of the people he workedwith for almost ten years. He draws us in,without hesitation, to an intimate lookinto the lives of the poor, giving names, place, and history to a section of societymost of us just drive by without evennoticing.

The purpose of this paper is to illuminatethe teaching stores of the poor and thethemes found within their lives. First, thereis the intense loneliness. Second, underthe filth of poverty lies wisdom honed byhumility. And third, that as we get toknow the poor, we may recognize a needto re-script our life’s values and do thepersonal work to love more.

To Know Loneliness Who are thehomeless? Are they just people who likedto party and never stopped? Or are theyonly people who couldn’t handle thedemands of the system, anarchists who

tried another path and failed, or were justtoo stubborn to shoulder theresponsibilities of the 9-to-5 like the restof us. In the story of Lucy, we learn thatsome people, regardless of their heart’sdesire, are “like a rogue gene, wanting tobelong yet of such a nature that the restof the body must reject it” They just don’tfit in the system.

Lucy is developmentallydisabled and not pretty tolook at. She talks incessantly, making it hard for anyone toenter into an easyconversation with her, andshe lives in filth, not onlybecause she has a compulsivedisorder that drives her toobsessively pick up any andeverything, but because shehas been discarded like thetrash she collects. Lucy is alone, unloved, untouched, and unwanted. Smith remindsus that no matter who we are, we ache“to know and be known, to love and beloved”. He explains:“When I see a man…I see the only entityin nature with which sanctity is associated. The particular individual may not be dearto me—in fact, I may even dislike him. Buthe is dear to someone else, to his mother, for example, although that, too, is not thereason for his eminence. For even ifnobody cares for him, he is still a humanbeing”.

Wisdom of the Poor Throughout Smith’sencounters with the poor, he was struckby their innate wisdom and heart. Amongthe mentally ill, he found a spirit of piety“more devotional and more other-orientedthan that of much of formal religiouslife”, as evidenced in the story of Theo, who casually told Gary that he prays “foreveryone. And, Brother Gary, I pray forGod, too. He needs help”.

In the story of Norman, who experienceda long stay in a mental hospital and yearslater continues to endure the mental

instability of schizophrenia, we hear hiswisdom streaming through hisschizophrenic delusions and heavymedications as he recognizes his need forpeople involved in his daily life who—through their own kind of experience—can help him grow. Smith shows us howeven the mentally ill have “a place in themthat is sacred, and they can touch it in the

presence of one whom they cantrust, a person committed towalking with them through theminefields”.

Love More Gary Smith held acouple of his most touchingstories close to his heart, notdisclosing them until one read tothe end of his book where wemeet first, Eddie. Eddie remindsus that there are people in theworld who have known only

abuse all their lives, and even the bestthey have to offer isn’t enough to bridgetheir world with ours: I said I was going tofind myself. I didn’t go looking for myself.I went to find something more preciousthan that. I was looking for my spirit thatsomeone stole…it’s sometimes coldoutside, but not as cold as people. I amnow recovering from alcoholism and drugaddiction. But I don’t know if I’ll everrecover from physical and mental abuse.

It is Gary’s friend Robert–38 years old,manic-depressive, homosexual, HIVpositive drug addict, who, as he lay dying, shared the piece of truth we all need tohear: Please continue to go out and bewith other people like me, and love thosepeople as you have loved me, and helpthem find meaning in their lives as youhave done with me.

To Close Thank you, Gary Smith, forholding up the mirror so we may see thebeauty of humanity reflected in theangels of the poor. May we find thecourage to love more so that people arenot left to live and die alone.

TECH TIPS FROMNORLEEN

Tech Tip #2: What is Phishing?

Phishing is a common scam, whichtypically involves an email request thaturges you to update your accountinformation immediately. Often times theemail will have a direct link to a webpage for you to confirm information suchas account numbers, social securitynumbers and other confidentialinformation. Some of your personalinformation may already be filled in thusmaking the request seem legitimate. Youcan avoid becoming a victim byunderstanding and following these tips...

Never provide your detailed personal orfinancial information to an unsolicitedtelephone call, fax, letter or e-mail.

Do not give your password to anunsolicited e-mail request. Financialinstitutions do not verify thisinformation via the Internet.

Use SPAM filters to help reduce thenumber of fraudulent e-mail’sreceived.

Do not be fooled by the financialinstitution’s logos or links to their webpage being present in an email. It isvery easy for thieves to create links tolegitimate web sites.

If you believe that the request islegitimate, contact the institutionlooking for the information directly.Use a local or nationwide directory toobtain the phone number.

Do not use the phone number givenon the initial request.

Review all account statements on aregular basis to monitor any suspiciousactivity.

Look for the yellow lock symbol at thebottom right hand corner of yourbrowser window when making onlinepurchases or giving any personalinformation.

Look for a web address starting with“HTTPS” when making onlinepurchases or giving any personal

informationonline. (the ‘S’stands forsecure andmost phishingwon’t havethat)

Be careful andbe aware.

There is a very sophisticated system ofencryption and safety measures for doingbusiness online, to protect the user andconsumer. There are also many ways tobe proactive and to protect yourself andyour identity online and offline. So, knowthat there is safety and that we must beaware of possible risks of Phishing.

For more information, go to your favoritesearch engine and type in Phishing, thereis much good information out there tohelp us not get hooked.

Blessings, Norleen

In the year 2000 when Connor calledthe gathering called A FEAST OFPOSSIBILITIES, which was the seedplanting for our Woman’s Way RedLodge, she read and gave out copies ofan article about service to life. Thearticle has become very important tomany of us in Red Lodge. Periodically itcomes up in a way that brings it backout to the forefront.

It came up again after our Fall WisdomCouncil when Bobbi Edwards, whoattended that Wisdom Council, and waspresent in 2000, reminded me of the article.Bobbi said that much of what is describedin this article is who we are in Woman’sWay Red Lodge, and what we do.

You don’t have to take anyone’s wordfor it, determine that for yourself byreading the article. Here it is, enjoy!

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

In recent years the question how can Ihelp? has become meaningful to manypeople. But perhaps there is a deeperquestion we might consider. Perhapsthe real question is not how can I help?but how can I serve?

Serving is different from helping.Helping is based on inequality; it is nota relationship between equals. Whenyou help you use your own strength tohelp those of lesser strength. If I'mattentive to what's going on inside ofme when I'm helping, I find that I'malways helping someone who's not asstrong as I am, who is needier than Iam. People feel this inequality. Whenwe help we may inadvertently takeaway from people more than we couldever give them; we may diminish theirself-esteem, their sense of worth, integrity and wholeness. When I help Iam very aware of my own strength. Butwe don't serve with our strength, weserve with ourselves. We draw from allof our experiences. Our limitationsserve, our wounds serve, even ourdarkness can serve. The wholeness in usserves the wholeness in others and thewholeness in life. The wholeness in youis the same as the wholeness in me.

Service is a relationship between equals.

Helping incurs debt. When you helpsomeone they owe you one. Butserving, like healing, is mutual. There isno debt. I am as served as the person Iam serving. When I help I have afeeling of satisfaction. When I serve Ihave a feeling of gratitude. These arevery different things.

Serving is also different from fixing. When I fix a person I perceive them asbroken, and their brokenness requiresme to act. When I fix I do not see thewholeness in the other person or trustthe integrity of the life in them. When Iserve I see and trust that wholeness. Itis what I am responding to andcollaborating with.

There is distance between ourselvesand whatever or whomever we arefixing. Fixing is a form of judgment. Alljudgment creates distance, adisconnection, an experience ofdifference. In fixing there is aninequality of expertise that can easilybecome a moral distance. We cannotserve at a distance. We can only servethat to which we are profoundlyconnected, that which we are willing totouch. This is Mother Teresa's basicmessage. We serve life not because it isbroken but because it is holy.

If helping is an experience of strength, fixing is an experience of mastery andexpertise. Service, on the other hand, isan experience of mystery, surrender andawe. A fixer has the illusion of beingcausal. A server knows that he or she isbeing used and has a willingness to beused in the service of somethinggreater, something essentially unknown.

Fixing and helping are very personal;they are very particular, concrete andspecific. We fix and help many differentthings in our lifetimes, but when weserve we are always serving the samething. Everyone who has ever servedthrough the history of time serves thesame thing. We are servers of thewholeness and mystery in life.

The bottom line, of course, is that wecan fix without serving. And we canhelp without serving. And we can servewithout fixing or helping. I think Iwould go so far as to say that fixingand helping may often be the work ofthe ego, and service the work of thesoul. They may look similar if you'rewatching from the outside, but theinner experience is different. Theoutcome is often different, too.

Our service serves us as well as others. That which uses us strengthens us.Over time, fixing and helping aredraining, depleting. Over time we burnout. Service is renewing. When weserve, our work itself will sustain us.

Service rests on the basic premise thatthe nature of life is sacred, that life is aholy mystery which has an unknownpurpose. When we serve, we knowthat we belong to life and to thatpurpose. Fundamentally, helping, fixingand service are ways of seeing life. When you help you see life as weak, when you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. From the perspective of service, we areall connected: All suffering is like mysuffering and all joy is like my joy. Theimpulse to serve emerges naturally andinevitably from this way of seeing.

Lastly, fixing and helping are the basisof curing, but not of healing. In 40years of chronic illness I have beenhelped by many people and fixed by agreat many others who did notrecognize my wholeness. All that fixingand helping left me wounded in someimportant and fundamental ways. Onlyservice heals.

SERVICE? HELPING? WHICH?By Rachel Naomi Remen

–Melissa Dreaming Bee

It’s the new year. My children are busyplaying a trading card game where thecharacters evolve through different levelsof themselves. This morning they wereexplaining that the evolvement happenswhen the characters eat different stones, then they named off all the differentkinds of stones that can make thingsevolve: leafstone, firestone, thunderstone, waterstone, darkstone, deltastone, metalstone, psychicstone, moonstone, everstone.

Which, of course, got me to thinkingabout stones and evolving so I took awalk down by St. Helena Creek which isjust starting to rise with this winter’s rain. There are wide beds of all kinds of rocks, some secreting away crystals, othersscrolled with iron red stripes, some asgreen as the moss on the north side ofthe oak trees, others hard tight andblack with their volcanic selves.

I walked and stacked rocks and pickedsome up just to feel the shape of themin my hand. I imagined what the namesof each of these stones could be. Ilistened to the creek water scurryingover stones, watched as it eddied alongthe shoulders, waded through pockets ofwater caught up higher past the bankwhere the river flowed last year, but onlycatches rain water this year.

I thought of all the ways my longings and

yearnings are asking me to evolve rightnow. And then I focused in on the idea ofchoosing a stone oracle for the year.Maybe you’d like to join me. Here’s how:

1 Know that the stone beings havewisdom to offer you.

2 Go for a walk in the worldaround you – by a creek or river, along the ocean, across theedge of the desert, around theblock in your neighborhood.

3 As you walk, ask for a stone tocall out to you.

4 Once a stone catches your eye –pick it up, talk with it, decide if itwants to come home with youfor the whole year (some stonesjust want to be appreciated andmoved around a bit – so youmight find yourself holding oneas you walk until you come tothat stone that really wants tocome home with you).

5 When you find your stone, inthankfulness, give an offering tothe earth (a bead in your pocket, some hairs off your head, asong, a little spit, a stick stuck inthe ground where you picked upthe rock).

6 Right there where you found itor on your walk home, look at

the textures, colors, shapes andmake connections about whatthat rock is reflecting to youabout your life.

7 Take the rock home and put iton your altar or in a space youpass by often in the day.

8 Spend some time each weekwith the rock – look at it, sketchpictures of it, paint it, hold it, askit what it is telling you aboutyour life this year, ask what it isinviting you into. Journal yourideas, thoughts, conversations, talk with a friend about what yousee.

The great thing about rocks is they arepatient. Have you ever seen anythingmove so slowly in your life? Anothergreat thing about rocks is they are morecomplex than they look – which will giveyou plenty of viewpoints on the waysthat the stone encourages you to growthroughout this next year. Then, just likethe characters my kids play with, drink in all the stone has to offer you and evolve!
