SCHOOL DISTRICT NAMES NEW SUPERINTENDENTAt a special meeting on May 9, 2011, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education took action to appoint Sandra L. Lyon as SMMUSD’s new Superintendent, effective July 1, 2011.
"Sandy emerged as the front-runner from a group of superb and highly qualified finalists for the position,” remarked Board of Education President José Escarce. “Her intelligence, experience, personal warmth, focus on all students, and collaborative approach make her ideal for our schools and communities. We are thrilled that she will be assuming the leadership of our district this summer, and we look forward to working with her to make our schools better for all students.”
Ms. Lyon has served as the Chief Leadership Officer in the Palmdale Unified School District for the past two years, where she supervised, evaluated, and provided support for the District’s twenty-four principals. She collaborated with all District departments to address issues of planning, communication, and implementation. While at Palmdale, Ms. Lyon also focused on improving middle school student achievement.
Prior to her work in Palmdale, Ms. Lyon served as the Superintendent/Principal of Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes School District. As Superintendent/Principal of this one-school district, Ms. Lyon wore many hats, working with the Board of Trustees to develop and update policies, with the Chief Business Officer in labor negotiations, and providing staff professional development and implementing new instructional programs and practices.
Ms. Lyon’s other administrative positions have included the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for the Lancaster Unified School District; middle school principal; and elementary school principal and assistant principal. Prior to taking on an administrative role, Ms. Lyon taught language arts and coordinated an after-school program for at-risk students.
Her efforts in Lake Hughes, including the implementation of a Response to Instruction and
Intervention program and the creation of a climate of unity, trust, and enthusiasm among staff members helped the school to earn a California Distinguished School Award.
In addition to her experience in public education, Ms. Lyon has also been a journalist in Northern California.
“I'm thrilled to welcome Sandy Lyon to our School District,” commented Board of Education Vice President Ben Allen. “We had a very strong pool of candidates, but were so impressed by Sandy's combination of experience, leadership, warmth, and vision. Everyone who knows Sandy sings her praises, and I know that she'll make an exceptional Superintendent for our District.”
SMMUSD’s current superintendent, Tim Cuneo, has been with the district since July 2008 and will retire in June 2011. To learn more about the selection process for the new superintendent, please visit http://www.smmusd.org/board/SuperintendentSearch.html.

Dr. Mark Kelly’s PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE! MAY/JUNE Dear Parents,
I am having trouble facing the notion that the end of the school year is just around the corner. We are in our final six weeks, which feels like a lot of time, but it is not when I look at my to-do list. The truth is, the end of the year is near and this is my last principal’s message until fall.
This week was a wonderful example of the dynamic life of school. Throughout the week our students did their STAR testing, advanced placement examinations and CAHSEE testing for which our teachers and students prepared all year. Athletes in track, swimming and tennis are competing in play-off competitions. I attended a late night Board of Education meeting where they selected a new superintendent and discussed a policy important to Malibu High. Our choir returned from a successful field trip competition at Disneyland and our sixth graders did their community service learning read-a-thon project. All over the course of seven short days.
I confess that at times I feel overwhelmed by so much; more often I am exhilarated. Teaching, learning, thinking, and wrestling with ideas; learning to get along, compete, recreate, socialize and serve others is what happens in school every day. As I age, my ability to recall specific details fades. What sticks with me are the impressions of the daily life of school, the times when you can see the spirited dynamics of this institution in full motion. Sitting in the principal’s chair, I have a unique vantage point by which to observe the totality of school life. My favorite moments are when I set aside the immediate pressure of getting item number twenty-six on my to-do list done and go out and see our thriving school community. When I attend baseball games, I love to find my space along the first-base fence as I can see our athletes on the baseball, softball and football fields; our children studying and learning at The Club, and hear the enthusiastic voices of our award-winning cheer squad in the amphitheater. I can look out at our campus, with the Pacific Ocean as an awe-inspiring back drop, where the important work of teaching and learning takes place. To see all aspects of our community play out in so many marvelous ways brings me both personal and professional joy. For this, I am grateful.
Thank you all for your commitment and support throughout the year. I wish you and your family a wonderful, safe and restful summer. I congratulate the parents and students of the Class of 2011 and wish well those of you leaving us for new exciting opportunities. I also congratulate the parents and students of our promoting eighth graders and welcome you as the incoming Class of 2015.
Sincerely,
Mark O. Kelly
Atentamente,Mark O. Kelly

BUY TICKETS TODAYEVITA ON STAGE JUNE 2,3,4,5
The High School Theatre Department at Malibu High will present Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical EVITA on Thursday, June 2, Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, June 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the school, 30215 Morning View Drive.
Argentina's controversial First Lady is the subject of this dynamic musical masterpiece. As an illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-‐poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-‐two, the president's mistress at twenty-‐four, First Lady at twenty-‐seven, and dead at thirty-‐three. Eva Peron "saint to the working-‐class, reviled by the aristocracy and mistrusted by the military" was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. Told through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, EVITA creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself.
Reserved seats for Evita are $20 for adults and $15 for students/seniors, and can be purchased in advance on the school website,http://malibuhigh.org. At the door, all tickets will be $20. Buy tickets NOW by clicking on this LINK.

PTSA Awards Parents who Make a Difference
This year’s PTSA Honorary Service Awards honored Pastor Menjivar for his service to the youth of Malibu. Nominated by Siugen Constanza, Program Manager of the Boys and Girls Club, Pastor’s continuous donation of time to make The Club a welcoming place for everyone was warmly appreciated. Yalile Pieper also presented an Honorary Service award to Dolores and Miguel Jesus who have been dependable leaders of the Bilingual Committee and were instrumental in keeping the committee going during the interim year before Yalile Pieper’s arrival. Their dedication to the Committee has made it ever stronger and an invaluable resource for Malibu High families whose native language is Spanish. Bill Bixler presented Eric Myer with a Continuing Service Award. Eric was recognized for the multitude of services he has provided over the 7 years his daughter Alyssa has been a
student at MHS. Eric’s world class photography of the children playing their instruments and performing on stage as well as the stunning posters he has created for Malibu High’s Performing Arts Department was especially noted. He and his wife were also instrumental in redesigning the teacher’s lounge three years ago. To the left are pictured members of the “Graduating With Honors” group whom the PTSA honored as well. Graduating senior parents who have volunteered at Malibu High were invited to the event and honored for their leadership and service. In photo from left to right: Jeff White, Alex Kaliakin,

FROM THE PTA PRESIDENTWENDY SIDLEY
“The school is the last expenditure upon which America should be willing to economize. ”
Franklin D. Roosevelt
I can’t believe the school year is already coming to an end. It has been a great year and over the past couple weeks the PTSA has hosted two events to honor some great people in our school community.
On Friday, April 29th we hosted the annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon at Duke’s. It was a very busy afternoon as the staff enjoyed a trivia game, a delicious lunch, an award ceremony, a hula performance, and a hula contest. The staff had a great time and four of the staff members received Duke’s $50 gift certificates for their fabulous hula dancing. Congratulations to Honorary Service Award winners: Wendy Wax Gellis, Eric Martin, and Dan Heiderman, and also to our Continuing Service Award winners: Katy Lapajne, Brian Corrigan, Brigette Leonard, Yalile Pieper, and Cynthia Slawter.
On Tuesday, May 3rd the PTSA hosted the Honorary Service Awards at the home of Patricia & Eric Gruendemann. It was a chance to honor the parents who have their last child graduating from Malibu High, as well as a few special parents who have gone above and beyond in their contributions to our school. Congratulations to our Continuing Service Award winners: Eric Myer, Dolores and Miguel De Jesus, Pastor Menjivar.
As I end my term as PTSA President, I would like to personally thank all of you who have contributed your time and energy to make Malibu High such a great place for our children to attend school. It is really the role of PTSA to recruit volunteers to help support the staff at Malibu High. Our parents volunteer for hundreds and hundreds of hours every year and that volunteering really makes a difference to our students. Thanks to all of you who help to make a difference. And a special thanks to the PTSA executive board for their support and friendship, and for all of the hours they have put in for our students.
Congrats to our graduates. We wish you well and will miss you. Have a great summer. See you in the fall.

CALIFORNIA REQUIRES KNEW WHOOPING COUGH VACCINE FOR 2011/2012AB 354: The New 7th – 12th Grade California Immunization Law (California Department of Public Health, Immunization Branch)
What PARENTS Need To Know
What is the new Tdap requirement for 7th – 12th graders?
Starting July 2011, a new law (AB 354) changes California immunization requirements for all students entering 7th-‐12th grades. The law requires:
This upcoming school year (2011-‐2012), all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (called “Tdap”) before starting school.
For the following school year (2012-‐13) and future school years, all students entering 7th grade only will need proof of a Tdap shot to start school.
Do ALL 7th – 12th grade students need to get the “Tdap” shot?Yes. For this coming school year (2011 – 2012 school year), all students going into 7th – 12th grades must haveproof of having had the Tdap booster shot before starting school. This includes current students, new studentsand transfer students in both public and private schools. Beginning the year after (2012 – 2013 school year),the law will only affect 7th graders. Limited exemptions are allowed.
What is Tdap?Tdap is a booster vaccine for older children, adolescents, and adults. It safely protects against 3 dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (also called pertussis).
Why was the Tdap requirement added? This new requirement will help protect your child and others in your school and community from whoopingcough. Whooping cough is a serious disease that causes coughing fits that can last for months. It can be deadlyfor infants. In recent years, whooping cough has been increasing in the United States. In 2010, whoopingcough was widespread in California.
What are the diseases tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis)? Tetanus – (also called lockjaw) causes painful tightening of the muscles. It can lead to “locking” of thejaw so the person cannot open his/her mouth or swallow. Diphtheria – is a throat infection that can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure and death. Whooping cough – (also called pertussis) is a contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that
make it hard to breathe. It spreads easily when someone with the disease coughs or sneezes. Symptoms can last for months. Whooping cough is very dangerous for young babies.
When should my child get vaccinated? Now. A large number of students need a Tdap shot before the start of school next year. Avoid the rush andmake sure your child can start school on time. Make an appointment for your incoming 7th – 12th grader to get aTdap booster shot now. Children as young as 10 years old are recommended to get vaccinated with Tdap. This will protect them against the ongoing threat of whooping cough and will meet the Tdap school requirement for when they are in 7th grade. Keep documentation of your child’s Tdap booster shot in a safe place. Your child will need proof of immunization in order to start school.
What if my child has had whooping cough recently or in the past?Your child will still need a Tdap booster shot. Immunity developed after having whooping cough disease wearsoff, leaving your child at risk for getting whooping cough again. A Tdap booster shot is needed to both protectyour child in the future and to meet the school requirement.
Where can my child get vaccinated?Children should visit their regular doctor or health care provider to get their Tdap shot. Children 18 years oldand younger who are uninsured or underinsured may qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program. To find aprovider near you, call 1-‐877-‐243-‐8832 or visit: www.eziz.org/pages/vfc_locations2.html. Some localpharmacies and Health Departments may also offer the Tdap vaccine.
What if my child does not have proof of a Tdap shot before school starts?He/She may not start school. Any student who does not have proof of getting a Tdap booster shot will not beallowed to start school until proof of immunization is given to the school.
Are immunization exemptions allowed under California law?The same exemptions for children entering kindergarten apply.
Where can I go for more information? For more information, visit the California Department of Public Health, Immunization Branch website athttp://www.getimmunizedca.org.

Ladies and Gentleman -
Indeed, “Redundant” is our middle name these days. It is worth mentioning yet again, that spring has firmly taken hold and the hot weather practically overwhelms us. Nevertheless, please do not send your children to school wearing see-through tops, bikini tops, bandeaux tops, halter tops, strapless tops, midriff tops, off the shoulder tops as well as strapless dresses, exposed undergarments, short shorts, sagging pants or any clothing advertising alcohol, drugs or weapons. We suppose that begs the question, “Whatever is a young Malibu Student to wear? We trust that your boundless creativity will offer up something suitable to wear for our academic environment.
Indeed, we continue to focus with laser beam precision on the MHS Dress Code in our efforts to maintain a welcoming and appropriate educational environment for every student at our school. Parents, you can help us avoid taking your child away from class time, if you monitor their clothing choices as they leave for school and check their backpacks for additional inappropriate clothing. Improper attire is a nuisance.Thank you!
