Energy poverty and development • 1.3 billion people lack access to any form of

electricity and 2.7 billion people still cook over open fires

• Securing access to sustainable energy services for developing countries is a significant challenge for sustainable development

Energy is an enabler and powers opportunities for environmental, social and economic development

First hand knowledge on renewable energy technologies in developing countries often only exists locally or in fragments

• Difficult for individuals to access this information

• Necessary to facilitate and expand diffusion of theses technologies in developing countries through practical knowledge sharing

Why Energy?

Vision • A world of borderless and unrestricted knowledge access

and exchange on renewable energy and energy efficiency issues, in which all people have access to sustainable energy services.

Mission Statement To contribute to addressing the question of how universal access to sustainable energy services for all can be achieved through: • Leveraging Web 2.0 technologies to connect knowledge,

expertise, communities, cross-cutting initiatives and strengthen partner relationships to expand the diffusion of energy information

• Fostering global collaborative knowledge exchange on renewable energy and energy access issues, and

• Creating the right environment and providing useful tools for stakeholders engaged in the energy sector to collaborate and share knowledge and practical experience.

Our Approach – Making Knowledge Available

•Free clean energy information to use and share •Participation open to all •Open source technology •Community written and curated work •Relevant, accurate and verifiable information •Foster innovation •Diversity is valued •Remain independent
