Expressions of interest now being taken for Energize’s third and final Conference for 2014/15.
Outdoor Adventure Sports Conference
Thursday 22nd January 9am- 1pm
Whitehouse Hotel Telford
£20pp to attend including all seminars, refreshments and lunch.
Are we sweating our natural assets in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin?
A vast amount of our landscape is countryside with a plethora of hills, rights of way, woods, waterways and mini lakes but do we make use of these natural assets to get local people active and healthy whilst also attracting visitors from further afield?
This conference will introduce the latest thinking on how both these issues can be tackled for the benefit of our physical, mental and economic wellbeing. Sharing cutting edge research, practical examples from other areas and information about local support to providers of activity we aim that you will leave empowered and inspired to take that next step.
With confirmed speakers from Sport & Recreation Alliance who will present their new ground breaking national research 'Reconomics' into the economic value of the outdoor recreation and Cumbria Tourism 'Adventure Capital' project the event promises to be one that cannot be missed.
If you're promoting tourism or economic development or an activity provider (whether that be an activity centre, youth group, forest school, outdoor club, educational outdoor provider, provider of wildlife experiences, independent instructor or outdoor education student) this event is for you.
Register your initial interest here [email protected] and we'll send you booking details once all seminars have been confirmed.

BRIDGNORTH
SAILOR GETS ROYAL
APPROVAL
A Bridgnorth sailor had her outstanding volunteer endeavours recognised by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal at the annual RYA Volunteer Awards in London on Friday (21 November).
Chelmarsh Sailing Club’s Elaine Westwood, from Bridgnorth, was amongst some 47 winners from across the UK honoured for their exceptional generosity and dedication to boating at the awards ceremony and exclusive luncheon held at One Great George Street, Westminster.
Elaine received an RYA Lifetime Commitment Award and was presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate by HRH, President of the RYA.
Addressing guests, HRH hailed the volunteers for making the access of sailing as good as possible, with the quality and professional approach to that activity key, stating how sailing sets a very good example across all sports of maintaing these high standards.
HRH also stressed that for any sport to continue it has to be fun for everyone involved, and she thanked all the volunteers for keeping the essence of enjoyment alive in sailing.
Duncan Truswell, RYA Sport Development Manager, added: “The RYA Volunteer Awards are all about celebrating the commitment of the countless volunteers who do fantastic work to support our sport. These people are the lifeblood of our sport, they keep our sailing clubs, events and organisations thriving and make it possible for others to get out on the water.

“Talk to me” study findings will help
to deliver more appealing activities
for disabled people
The Talk to Me report provides guidelines for sport and fitness providers drawn up
with active and inactive disabled people. The national charity hopes the information
shared will mean disabled people are offered more appealing opportunities that they
want to take part in.
Less than half the number of disabled people take part in sport or physical activity
for 30 minutes once a week compared to non-disabled people. However, the English
Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) research has shown that 7 in 10 disabled
people want to take part in more sport and physical activity. Talk to Me adds to
EFDS’s growing research portfolio and builds on the key findings from the Motivate
Me report (May 2014).
Barry Horne, EFDS’s Chief Executive explains: “Whilst many sport and physical
activity providers already offer opportunities for disabled people to take part, the low
participation level suggests that either disabled people are unaware of opportunities
available to them or what they are offered is not appealing enough. This report
allows us all to understand how we can make opportunities attractive so that many
more disabled people can be active for life.”
Ten key principles were identified. These principles, if followed, should help
providers improve their offer to disabled people and make it more appealing. The
report goes through each principle in detail, providing evidence of what disabled
people are looking for and recommendations of how to meet expectations. They can
be grouped within top three headings, which are:
· Drive awareness
· Engage the audience
· Offer support and reassurance
EFDS plans to test how effectively organisations apply the evidence and follow
these guidelines, and assess how successful they are in increasing disabled
people’s participation.

British Rowing
British Rowing - Safe recruitment protocols for clubs
A safe and appropriately administered recruitment protocol for anyway working with
juniors is a fundamental part of safeguarding children and/or Adults at Risk in British
Rowing affiliated clubs.
A Criminal Record Check alone is not sufficient to indicate whether someone is
appropriate to work with children or Adults at Risk. The minimum recruitment
process for anyone whom clubs wish to deploy in roles with junior is outlined in
Section 5 of the British Rowing Safeguarding and Protecting Children Policy:
Please remember that there is no automatic ‘transferability’ of a British Rowing
Criminal Record Check between clubs. If a club is considering recruiting someone
who is already in possession of a DBS certificate obtained through British Rowing,
the club welfare officer must always contact British Rowing’s Lead Safeguarding
Officer for confirmation of their status as part of the recruitment process. View the

ASA launches first
annual Volunteer
Satisfaction Survey 2014 sees the launch of the first ASA annual volunteer satisfaction survey
which will provide all ASA volunteers with an opportunity to tell us more about
your personal volunteer experience.
The survey will not only offer you the opportunity to tell us about your current
experience, but to highlight any additional support or training that you would
like to receive.
We want to know more about your individual experience as a volunteer, what
motivates you, the training you have accessed and how much you know
about the volunteer support currently available to you. Survey responses will
support the future development of ASA volunteer initiatives.
The survey will close on the 12 December 2014 and should take no longer
than 15 minutes to complete. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our aquatic
clubs, and we want to know more about the experience you have!
The survey is completely confidential and does not require personal details to
be provided. It also will not identify any club or county so please complete it
as honestly as possible. Should you have any questions regarding the use of
the survey results, please contact: [email protected].

AAIAC Adventuremark
Managing Forum - Survey
of non Adventuremark
holders
The Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee (AAIAC) is representative
of a wide range of stakeholders from the adventure activity sector. It works with
the industry to identify and disseminate good practice, and to advise
government and its agencies accordingly.
The AAIAC Adventuremark Managing Forum is currently undertaking a review
of Adventuremark which is a non-statutory accreditation scheme that
demonstrates that a provider meets industry standards for the safe delivery of
adventure activities. The scheme is complimentary to statutory licensing but
reflects the totality of a provider’s activities including those who operate outside
of the scope of the licensing scheme.
As part of the review, the Managing Forum is keen to find out the views of those
activity providers who do not currently hold Adventuremark. The review seeks to
ensure that Adventuremark continues to be a valuable and appropriate scheme.
Ultimately it is about ensuring that the scheme can continue to provide
assurance to both providers and their users that safety systems, policies and
procedures are compliant with legal requirements and that they work to
recognised industry standards.
This survey is for those providers who DO NOT hold Adventuremark and
the survey responses are anonymous. The Managing Forum has a working
group that will analyse the responses in December. Your thoughtful responses
to this survey will be reviewed and considered by AAIAC. Any significant
findings or proposed developments will be made available on the
Adventuremark website in 2015 - www.adventuremark.co.uk
