Energize STW sends its wholehearted congratulations to Derek Hayward for his recognition in the New Years Honours list. Derek, of Wem, receives an MBE for dedicating more than 40 years as a volunteer and champion for sport in Shropshire. This honour is a justifiable recognition of his significant input to both school sport and the Shropshire Playing Fields Association, amongst others. In 1971 he organised the first ever inter-county cross country running competition for boys aged 13 -15 years in Shrewsbury and continued to do so for the next 21 years. He joined the Shropshire Playing Fields Association (SPFA) in 1972 and has helped them to raise funds totalling over £100k. He has been a member of the English School’s Athletics Association since 1988 and he is currently English Schools’ Race Walking Secretary. He has organised Shrewsbury Primary School’s athletics championships for the past 20 years.

Congratulations Derek Hayward MBE

Launching…Sport Oswestry

Staff at The Marches School in Oswestry have been working with key sports people in the area to launch an exciting new initiative. The first ‘Sport Oswestry’ meeting will take place on Tuesday 27th January 2015 from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at The Marches School. Following an exploratory meeting last September, the school has developed a close working partnership with Joe Lockley of Energize STW and Clive Knight of the Community Games, to form a group that comes together once every quarter, to discuss sports facilities, advertising, increasing participation and ways in which clubs and organisations can secure funding opportunities. Joanne White, Community Partnerships Coordinator at The Marches School, commented, “Sport Oswestry will aim, as a group, to assist local clubs to promote themselves, whilst bringing together resources to provide top quality facilities at the school for students, hirers and sports clubs as a whole community project. This is an exciting venture and we are delighted to be driving this initiative forward with the support of Energize STW and the Community Games”. Joe Lockley of Energize, added, “We are passionate about physical activity and working with the community to deliver a unified approach to promoting sport”. Interested sports groups or individuals are invited to come along to the first ‘Sport Oswestry’ meeting on Tuesday 27th January at 5.30pm at The Marches School.

DCMS bid to improve disabled access at sports stadiums

The government is calling on disabled sports fans to share their experiences of viewing live sport at stadiums and sports grounds across Britain. Ministers are hoping thousands of Britain’s 12 million disabled people will give their views on everything from wheelchair access and disabled parking to accessible toilets, hearing loops and treatment by other supporters at live sporting fixtures. Organisers want to hear from fans of all sports – and in particular rugby, cricket, football, hockey, basketball, cycling and motor-racing. Research showed nearly half of Premier League football clubs don’t offer even half the wheelchair space they should for disabled people. New online course creates more welcoming

environments for disabled customers

There has been a new online course launched by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) is set to improve disabled people’s experiences in sport and physical activity facilities. The ‘Delivering an excellent service for disabled customers’ training module means organisations can upskill their workforce and create more welcoming environments for everyone. The training, created through EFDS’s Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) programme, will support more organisations to reap the rewards of satisfied disabled customers and make active lives possible. Now the national charity, dedicated to disabled people in sport and physical activity throughout England, is eager for people to sign up.

Exercise allows you to age optimally

According to new research by Kings College London and Birmingham University, staying active allows you to age optimally. The study included amateur older cyclists who have levels of physiological function that would place them in a much younger age compared to the general population. In a study published by The Journal of Physiology, 84 males and 41 females took part aged between 55 and 79 to identify how the ageing process affects the human body and whether certain physiological markers can be used to determine age. The participants had to be able to cycle 100km in less than 6.5 hours to be included. The study concluded that staying physically active would enhance your chances of aging optimally compared to those who lead sedentary lifestyles. Read the full story here
