FIRST SIX MONTHS AS AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT HIGH SCHOOL OF THE YEAR

It has been just over 6 months since we were awarded Australian Government High School of the Year at the Australian Education Awards. With this award comes a very high profile and the responsibility of not only maintaining standards but also raising them. I am confident that this is what we have been doing, and will continue to do, as you will see from our achievements below.

A GREAT START

We have our largest ever Year 7 cohort with the school cracking the 1000 student population mark. Early indications are that this is a year group full of serious learners who have academic success as their number one priority. They, of course, join Year 8 & 9 cohorts who produced our best ever NAPLAN results over two consecutive years.

OPEN NIGHT

We had a packed hall for our Open Night on 13 February for Year 7, 2020. We prepared over 350 enrolment packs but ran out. As of last week, we have already received over 300 applications for next year, with over 100 students sitting the Extension Class test. Unfortunately for many applicants, we will be capping the number of students we accept at 200. We have clearly become a school of choice for exceptional students who excel both academically and on the sporting field.

TOP SCHOOL IN THE SHIRE

We are the Science and Engineering Champions of the Shire! Recently we competed against private and public schools from both inside and outside of the Shire at the ANSTO Science & Engineering Challenge. We were the top Shire school and finished second overall to the North Sydney private school Wenona. Congratulations to our Years 9&10 students and their teachers.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Academic success for every student is, and always will be, our No. 1 priority. Our new Head Teacher of Teaching & Learning, Sarah Hawke, has made a great start to her role. We have established a Quality Teaching & Learning Team that will evaluate the T&L environment across the school and develop and implement enhancements. We continue to employ a HSC Mentor and we are delivering additional HSC workshops across all subjects.

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

We were very excited to announce that we will be offering the VET Entertainment HSC course in 2019. Together with Drama, Dance, Music and Art we have developed a strong creative and performing arts program that performs regularly throughout the year and will be on full display at our annual Performing Arts Night.

HIGH-TECH AUDIO VISUAL EQUIPMENT FOR THE HALL

Our creative and performing arts students will be further supported with the purchase of new lighting and audio-visual equipment for the hall. Costing tens of thousands of dollars, this investment will benefit students for many years to come and is being funded by our wonderful P&C.

INCREDIBLE FEMALE ATHLETES

We recently had several female students compete at the Australian Track & Field Championships. Jade Johnston-Mitrevska, Tomysha Clark, Joy Levy, Georgie Latanis, Emily Weatherall, Kira-May Filemu, Ivy Boothroyd and Milly Boughton. Special mention to Ivy who won both the 800m and 1500m, and to Milly who won the 3000m Race Walk.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY We are so proud of our female staff and students and are committed to supporting them in every way. It is why we are leaders in celebrating International Women’s Day. This year’s event was a great success with all of our females coming together to celebrate and support each other. As a father of a son and daughter, I want to make sure that our girls get the same opportunities, support and recognition as boys.

A STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

Last week we had the official launch of our high performance cricket facility that is the best in Southern Sydney. This is an incredible training centre for our highly talented cricket students and ads to our already impressive list of world-class sporting facilities

CANTEEN UPGRADE

We are very excited that our canteen will be receiving a big refurbishment in the holidays so that it not only improves catering for the staff but also looks great.

TARGETED SPORTS PROGRAM

We now have 15 sports forming our TSP and the quantity and quality of athletes across the program is amazing. This week we made the exciting announcement that Gymnastics will be added as the 16th Sport in 2020. Trials for the Year 7, 2020 cohort will be held for all sports in Weeks 1&2 of Term 2.

AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF SPORTS SCIENCE

We continue to ensure that our Targeted Sports Program is at the forefront of innovation in the sporting world. It is why we are so committed to the testing of all our student athletes by Sydney University. These tests, conducted at the beginning and the end of the year, provide invaluable data to the athlete, their coaches and parents about the athlete’s development. The data is also used to modify training programs, inform strength & conditioning programs and prevent injury. It is the first of its kind in Australia and helps to make our talent development program truly unique.

IS YOUR CHILD IN THE RIGHT UNIFORM

We are committed to having the best uniform standards in the Shire and beyond. Please ensure that with the change of seasons your child is wearing one of the four options to keep their upper bodies warm. Long sleeve undershirts, plain black tops and TSP jackets are NOT uniform.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of my incredible staff, who ensure that our students are at the best school in the country. I would like to wish staff, students and parents a safe and happy Easter.

Mr J Kozlowski Principal

Dutch Principal Tour Our school was very proud to be included in the Dutch Principal Tour, which was attended by educational leaders from countries such as Norway and Denmark. Our school showcased some of the wonderful teaching and learning that takes place every day in classrooms. Teachers from different faculties demonstrated innovative practice related to current evidence based practice. LITERACY AND NUMERACY - NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (NAPLAN) All students in Years 7 and 9 across Australia will again sit for the national tests in Literacy and Numeracy. The tests will be conducted in Term 2 on Tuesday 14 May to Thursday 16 May. All tests will be held in the hall and in F block. Students will be able to catch up on Friday 17 May if they have missed one of the tests. More information can be found on the NAPLAN website- http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html Study Skills We have conducted and will conduct study skills seminars for all students using Elevate Education. Elevate’s study skills sessions are designed to achieve behavioural change amongst students. Gifted and Talented Education Already students have enjoyed the enrichment experience of excursions and extension of class work. Our Gifted and Talented program is led by Mrs Karina Dunne and we have a Year 7 and 8 Coordinator – Mrs Alex Jones and a Stage 5 and 6 Coordinator – Ms Sarah Parkinson. The team bring a wealth of experience and passion for providing opportunity, extension and enrichment of all students. The team recently attended professional development with Professor John Hattie on Maximising Learning Impact. Gifted and Talented Education at Endeavour is a particular focus and we look forward to an exciting year ahead with vast opportunity for all students. School Procedures Just a reminder to all parents and carers that the school has clearly defined procedures for lateness, using sick bay and early leave requirements. For students who become sick during the day, they are required to inform their class teacher who will organise for them to be sent to the sick bay where a trained first aid attendant will provide support and contact parents. Children should not contact their parents directly via their mobile phones. Any student who arrives late to school must bring a late note from their parent. Alternately, you may walk your child into the office and sign them in or phone the office to advise that your child has just been dropped off and is on their way in. When these procedures are followed, the partial absence is recorded as “explained” as opposed to “unexplained”. Partial absences can also include students with a request to leave school early. Students should be at school engaged in their learning for the vast majority of the time, unless they are sick. There is clear research to support the impact of regular absences on a child’s academic progression. If you have any questions about attendance, please contact your child’s Year Adviser, Head Teacher Welfare or the Deputy Principal responsible for your child’s year group. All students in Years 7-11 have now received their assessment booklets. The booklets have also been emailed to parents. At each Year group meeting, crucial issues such as penalties for lateness, malpractice, plagiarism, technology issues and other important factors were discussed with students. Each subject area is represented in the booklet and their relevant assessment schedule that outlines the timing and types of formal assessments they will be issuing for the year. I recommend that students and their parents read through the booklet and assessment schedules together to ensure that you are both aware of the school’s policy and procedures for completing assessments and note the timing of each subject’s assessments on a planner. I look forward to seeing all students return on Tuesday 30 April looking distinguished in the correct school uniform. Please check the school’s website on uniform requirements. I remind everyone that the school is a uniform school, which not only ensures the safety of our students but also provides a sense of belonging to a community that cares about promoting unity and inclusivity. We grow when we are out of our comfort zone; it’s the scary places that move us to our destiny. When we are stretched it takes us to the next level. Year 12 students have been in their comfort zone for their junior years and have now been thrusted out of their comfortable nest, protected, guarded and nurtured by teachers and taken into another zone where they can discover their wings. Independent learning and study, modelled and guided by teachers but purely driven by students is now the common experience. Our students will discover their wings as they strive to be independent and strategic learners, becoming more effective with their time management and successful with their study techniques. As they experience success step by step they will discover their strengths and talents, they will develop new muscles, they will not hit the ground but rather they will discover their wings and realise they were created to soar.

Sometimes it feels uncomfortable for students when teachers push them out of the nest, but the students will come out confident, wiser and ready for new opportunities in their life. Year 12 are midway along the pathway to finishing the HSC, they have been engaging in HSC Seminars to develop their examination strategies and techniques, using notes from the HSC marking centre, teachers have developed workshops focused on maximising marks and revising topics. Students have been shown the way and must now take the learnings, stretch themselves and grow.

During Term 2 we will be assisting students with the admissions to university process, University Admissions Centre UAC has opened and students have until September to apply for university. Information on applications for Early Entry into University are available from our Careers Adviser Mrs Kaladelfos. Students are encouraged to see the Careers Adviser and book an appointment for discussions and guidance on the UAC entry process.

It is strongly recommended that Year 12 students develop study timetables for the Term 1 holidays and to make revision notes, memorise concepts and practice applying skills and understandings to as many questions as possible. Science students have been provided access to the Macquarie University Study Lab, where they have access to animated Science concepts, revision notes and quizzes to assess their knowledge and skills of Year 12 Chemistry, Physics and Biology course content. We strongly encourage students to use the lab over the holidays to reinforce concepts and become fluent in their application of skills and understandings of course content ensuring they assess themselves as they complete each unit of study.

Year 10 have attended Elevate study skills workshops to assist them with their personal study techniques and time management skills. Students are encouraged to organise their course notes, ask teachers questions when they are unsure of concepts and access the Homework Centre for extra support when completing tasks. The Homework Centre is open each Monday 2pm – 4pm, Tuesday period 5 and Thursday during sport. Students are encouraged to attend. Year 10 have also been completing Literacy and Numeracy Minimum Standard Testing this term with many students successfully completing the assessments.

Year 8 students have been highly engaged with their academic studies, the work becomes more complex and time management becomes essential when juggling sporting commitments with academic studies. As the term comes to a close, we have found many students excelling in different areas and assessment tasks submitted have been of the highest quality.

For all students I ask parents to monitor the use of computer and internet games on the phones. Many students spend endless amounts of time engaged in gaming or on social media and have lost so much time, which could have been better used for study or training, developing themselves on both the academic and sporting arenas.

Regards

Year 8

Year 8 has been busy immersing themselves in their practical subjects this term. Textiles students were able to highlight their creative flare for fashion when completing their handbag project. This project gave the students the opportunity to be creative, independent learners and explore the aesthetic and functional aspects of textiles. Students completed all stages of the design process experimenting with fabrics, colouration and decoration. Applying these techniques ensured quality textile items whilst learning stitching techniques and how to use a sewing machine. Students were also taught correct ways of ironing to ensure that the quality of fabric is never compromised. I am sure this will come in handy! I was able to attend Mrs Jessop’s Textile lesson with 8T4 and to witness their handbag masterpiece come to life. It was great to observe the students in this experiential learning environment.

Language

This year our Year 8 students are introduced to studying language. Students study Greek with Ms Mouratidis. Learning languages provide our students with rich linguistics and a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. Students were even treated to tasty Tiropites and Greek salad in reward for those who topped their respective classes in their first Greek test of the year.

Year 8 History students have explored the study of the Middle Ages this term. Students have received a notification for their upcoming assessment creating a catalogue using primary sources from the Medieval period. They are embodying the role of a museum curator to provide information and images on an aspect of medieval society. We look forward to seeing their work!

A reminder for our Year 8 History students that the Australian History Competition is running next term. Please see your history teacher if you would like to participate. This is a great opportunity to participate in this external assessment and recognise individual achievements including a $250 prize for the National Champions of year group.

Extension Class

Term 1 has already been very busy and very productive for the Extension class team and the students. I would first like to introduce our Endeavour staff Extension team for 2019 and their respective roles: Jocelyn Gooch (Deputy) will be the Executive in charge of the Extension program Karina Dunne will be overseeing the Years 7-11 Extension & GAT student program Sarah Parkinson is coordinating the Years 9-10 Extension class Alex Jones is coordinating Years 7 & 8 Extension classes Lisa Cutcliffe (Head Teacher Learning Support) oversees the testing procedures for Year 6 incoming students, ILPs for our current Year 7-10 students and other essential learning support required. The exciting news of the term has to be the GAT students who took on other private and public schools in Sydney in the ANSTO Science and Engineering Challenge. Placing 3rd in five of the eight challenges, they went on to secure 2nd place overall. An article was printed in The Leader about this exceptional result. The students will go on to collaborate in the next level challenge at Wollongong University and hopefully qualify for a national final later this year (photos and more information on this can be seen in the STEM report in the log). The other exciting news is that after our hugely successful collaboration with Bradfield Snr College’s Creative Art seniors last year at the VIVID Zines Workshop, we have been invited back! This year, students from Visual Arts in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be heading to St Leonards again in Week 3 of Term 2 to attend workshops on postcarding and vignette writing with a new theme ‘Urban Codes.’ This event culminates in a market fair at Bradfield College where the students showcase their final products and can sell their own creative art pieces. More on this in next term’s Log. ENVIROMATH Excursion Term 1 Students in 7MathsJ and 7MathsK will be attending the gifted education program called Enviromaths at the Sydney Botanic Gardens on Friday 12 April (last day of term). More on this excellent day out in the Term 2 Log. Initiatives happening next term that have been distributed are:-

• Sydney Impact Fest - Emerging Technologies conference for students wishing to attend individually - CBD, 14 June 2019.

• Hilarie Lindsay ‘Young writers’ short story competition’ registrations have been distributed. All entries should be in by 31 August.

iSTEM and STEM ENRICHMENT The NESA board endorsed iSTEM elective for Year 9 and 10 commenced this year with 30 students enrolling in the Year 9 course for 2019. The course comprises topics including mechatronics, coding, robotics, aeronautics, 3D computer aided drafting and 3D printing.

The course has a very strong focus on design and development and students will be implementing their learning by undertaking minor and major design projects across the two year in the subject.

First term has comprised an introduction to the fundamentals of STEM and students have undertaken a range of experimental, group work and inquiry-based learning activities.

Our capability continues to increase with acquisition of more equipment this term including STELR renewable energy kits, MAAS Thinkershield Arduino coding kits, SAM electrical kits and Pitsco hydraulic arm kits.

Students were also given the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality as part of the STEMShare Community Secondary Virtual Reality program. Endeavour is one of the first high schools to access this program where a range of STEM equipment is made available from the NSW Department of Education on loan.

The students definitely enjoyed their Virtual Reality experience and gained an insight as to how VR has implications for work environments of the future.

The STEM enrichment program for Year 7 also benefitted from this initiative and again the experience was a very popular one with the students. Coding has been a focus this term with the STEM enrichment class and the OZOBOT programmable robots and SCRATCH animation software have provided an engaging way for students to become familiar with the basics of coding.

Again, we would like to thank Toyota and Schools Plus who have made our STEM course possible through their grant scheme.

STEM Excursion Report

On Tuesday 26 March representatives from the Year 9 and 10 GAT classes attended a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) challenge at the ANSTO facility at Lucas Heights.

Schools from the Sutherland Shire, Inner West and Lower North Shore competed in a variety of challenges designed to test teamwork, construction, coding, mathematics and problem solving.

Of the eight challenges attempted on the day Endeavour performed exceptionally well, gaining top three places in five of the tasks and finished in overall second place.

The eventual winners were The Wenona School from North Sydney, while Endeavour’s second place made us the best Sutherland Shire School and the top State High School on the day.

The attitude, enthusiasm and teamwork displayed by the Endeavour students during the tasks was outstanding. Every group produced work of very high quality and were outstanding representatives of Endeavour Sports High School.

The next STEM challenge will be held at Wollongong University early in Term 3 and it was very pleasing to hear our students eagerly planning for this event and hoping to outdo their performance at ANSTO.

Winners of the STEM challenge at each of the events go to a national final held in Term 4. Hopefully an Endeavour SHS team will qualify for this event.

Modern Greek

Year 8 Greek classes have been having lots of fun learning to master a foreign language. This term they have covered the Greek Alphabet, Introducing themselves, Greetings, Asking and responding to “How are you?” They have learnt a variety of facts on Greece, the Greek flag and about an Orthodox Wedding ceremony as well as celebrations on Greek Independence day.

They have had dress-ups in Greek National costumes to mark Greek National Day and savoured a Greek BBQ of Lamb Souvlakia, pita bread with tzatziki sauce, Village salad and a bottle of natural Greek spring water.

The SILVER Special Education class have been learning Greek this term. They have also showed us their culinary skills when making Tiropites (Cheese Triangles).

(left) These students were treated to a mini Greek feast to celebrate their outstanding results in their first Language Test. Their happy faces reflect how proud they are of their achievements.

Looking forward to seeing further great results in Term 2 from the Yr8 cohort in Greek.

Clontarf

Year 11 Transurban Employment Visit

We visited the Headquarters of Transurban for the official launch of their Partnership with Clontarf. Our lads did a tour of the office and learnt all about The Sydney Harbour tunnel as well as other main roads. The tolls and amount of traffic that use the tunnel 24 hours a day is more than you could ever imagine! Transurban are keen to offer opportunities to our lads to join their workforce.

Year 9/10 Super Training

We took four boys out to a combined morning training session with our Mt Druitt Academies, way out west. Our fellas got the chance to develop their social skills and fitness stamina as we trained early, swung away in Aqua Golf and got an extensive VIP tour around the NRL Panthers Centre of Excellence - What an experience!

Year 12 Leadership Camp

Every year our Year 12s attend a Pledge Camp with other NSW Clontarf Academies.

This year we had guest speakers from the Department of Education, The NRL Resilience Project, The Aboriginal Community, The Glen (drug and alcohol experts) and Michael Ingray from National Indigenous Culinary Institute. This camp is all about making the commitment to finishing Year 12 and walking across the stage at the end of the year.

Inaugural NBL Round

The Clontarf Foundation were special guests of the Sydney Kings and Gilead for the very first Indigenous Round on Sunday. The Kings took on the Cairns Taipans at Qudos Bank Arena in the last game of the regular season. Nearly 50 boys from six Academies across NSW attended the game. Preston Campbell addressed the boys in what was a very moving and beneficial talk. He highlighted what guides him - Respect, Responsibility and Reciprocate and the meaning of each. The lads went courtside to see the players warm up, and meet and greet at the end of the game. An awesome day for the lads and a big win for the Kings as they head to the finals.

Classroom Visits

We are available to support our Clontarf boys being settled into class and engaging in their schoolwork. Please drop in to the Academy Room or give us a ‘buzz’ via phone or email if you’d like a helping hand.

TSP Dance

TSP Dance jumped off the starter block with full speed ahead this term! Training and rehearsals have started with the new team, students have worked with industry professional guest choreographers and they have performed at both the ESHS Open Night and the Anti-Bullying Assembly.

Our new TSP Dance Team is looking strong and cannot wait to show you how hard they have been working. The Dance Company and Ensemble audition videos have been filmed and sent off to In The Spotlight Dance Festival. We can’t wait until we hit the stage with our new routines!

Students have also been selected to audition for the Schools Spectacular in both Combined Dance and Featured Dance segments. Good luck, Dancers!

This term provided students the opportunity to train with industry professionals, including, Jessica Hesketh (Ballet) and Ben Zammit (Contemporary). Students took away valuable knowledge in relation to technique and performance whilst engaging in these tailored workshops. The dancers recognise how lucky they are to be able to work with such established performers.

The dancers performed ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’ at the ESHS Open Night. They wowed the audience with their skill and passion, where everyone left with a positive lasting impression! Well done, Dancers!

Asha Rostron, Chloe Decampi, Ellie Bull and Tea Maros performed to the song ‘Brave’ at the ESHS Anti-Bullying Assembly. This was Asha’s first performance as an ESHS TSP Dance member. They did a sensational job representing the program and danced beautifully. Thank you for stepping up and performing a beautiful routine! Alexia Barrett and Steven Gamu also performed a stunning routine at our Anti-Bullying Assembly. This was Steven’s first dance performance at school. What a great achievement!

Congratulations to Year 7 student Asha Rostron who has been cast in the professional production of Jack and the Beanstalk Panto Musical Spectacular. She was also selected to assist Travis Wall at the Victorian Dance Festival. We are so proud of you, Asha!

Finally, our TSP Dance trials will be held on the 2 May 2019. Please look at our flyer above for more information.

Dave Howlett – News

Dave Howlett has taken a year of leave from Endeavour and is currently working as assistant coach to the Cronulla Sharks NRL squad. We wish him well in his current position.

Bronson Xerri – NRL Debut

Congratulations to Bronson Xerri, 2018 Graduate, on his NRL Debut for the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday 6 April, against the Parramatta Eels.

Thank you and Farewell

Daniel Hundt has been a valued member of the Endeavour TSP Rugby League family since 2016. Throughout this time, Daniel has worked tirelessly for the boys and our program both at an administrative level and as a mentor. Daniel has managed the finances of the

program; has acted in the role of Manager at our NRL Schoolboy games, Uni Shield, Buckley Shield; has been in charge of Endeavour’s squad for the Canberra 9s tournaments – of which we were 2018 Champions; has often been the designated bus driver, not only to Canberra and back but to various games both for junior and Opens games.

Daniel and his family are re-locating to the South Coast and he will be taking up a position at Bomaderry High School. Although we are sad to lose him, this is a great move for him and his family with new opportunities.

The mark of Daniel’s commitment to our program is very clear. With all that has had to be organised for this massive move, he has made the time to put systems in place to ensure a smooth handover of his role in our program.

We take this opportunity to sincerely thank Daniel for everything that he has offered the students and staff of our program. He is and will always be a highly valued member of our Rugby League Family.

On behalf of the boys and the staff in our program, THANK YOU Daniel. Your efforts have been greatly appreciated and you will be sorely missed. Good luck in all your new endeavours!

TSP Football

Welcome back to another big year at Endeavour Sports High School in our Sydney FC Football program. We have had a significant increase in numbers in all years with the program now having to place prospective players on our waiting lists. We have introduced a girls only gym session, which has been very well received with up to 40 girls attending those sessions to ensure they are in peak physical condition. These sessions marry well with the boys’ sessions, which are also permanent fixtures of a morning before school. Year 7 at ESHS 2019 sees the introduction of our Year 7 groups in both boys and girls. Each group has already adapted well to our program structure and are displaying a willingness to put into action the information they have been given. The sessions where they are combined with the Year 8 boys and girls are giving them great opportunities to compete against the quality competition at Endeavour Sports High School.

Sydney FC Schools introduction at Jubilee Stadium Year 7 boys and girls were presented to the crowd before a Sydney FC game early this year. A public acknowledgement of the commitment Sydney FC has made with Endeavour Sports High School in being a Sydney FC School.

Sydney FC wins the W League Teresa Polias, Captain of Sydney FC and ambassador for our Girls Program for Sydney FC was presented with the W League trophy after

the Grand Final. That trophy was then brought to the school recently for our students to parade. We are looking forward to the men’s team doing the same. Sydney East Trials

Trials for the inter-regional carnivals have now begun with many of our senior students now competing for positions in the Sydney East squads. In the girls, congratulations go to incumbent members of the Sydney East team, Melody Nelson, Alex Tims, Jade Lockton, Chantelle Symes and Felicity McNeil on once again being selected. This year they have been joined by Olivia Lysiak in making the Sydney East Squad.

In the boys, congratulations go to Daniel Goni, Matt Keremelevski and Cody Ashburner on their selection in the Sydney East team. We look forward to hearing of their success in the upcoming championships. Sydney FC Talent ID days Term 1 and 2 will see the beginning of the Sydney FC Talent Identification days where all our students, boys and girls will have an opportunity to play against the other Sydney FC schools and put into play all that they have learnt so far. We look forward to seeing their continued progress displayed on the field. Friday 12 April will see our Year 7 and 8 boys and girls participate in the Inaugural Sydney FC Cup, which will be hosted by Endeavour at the Kareela synthetic pitches. The Sydney FC Cup is a new concept combining 11 v 11 competitive mini matches with a talent ID and monitoring component. Sydney FC schools Bossley Park, Crestwood High, Illawarra Sports and Matraville Sports will participate in what will be a huge day of exciting and intense mini matches for what promises to become the most sought after school based Cup in the Sydney metro area. Special mention to Aimee Hall, Olivia Lysiak, Millie Boughton, Peta Trimis, Alexia Saltirov, Yasmin Farrell on their selection in the NSW Institute teams and to Dom Sameenang, Angelo Kalamvokis, Jacob Creman-Cowan, Hayden Matthews, Brae Ovens and Jake Girchwood-Reich on their selection in the Sydney FC Academy squads. TSP Cricket

It has been an extremely busy term for TSP cricket. As well as the usual jam packed game schedule, there have been some great developments off the field as well.

The squad has been training consistently throughout the week, utilising our usual net sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as well as complementing this with Wednesday mornings in the gym and Uni of NSW fitness training.

The $150,000 upgrade on the school nets has been a godsend and our state of the art facility, particularly the base structure, is firmly in place. Five individual synthetic nets of slightly different surfaces allow our squad to practise on surfaces that vary from spinners wickets to pace bowling decks. Soon to be added to the mix are go pro cameras and ipods, which will allow our players to analyse their bowling and batting techniques with specific feedback from our coaches.

On Thursday 4 April, the nets were officially opened by the principal Mr Kozlowski, with special guests in attendance and The Leader newspaper covering the event. With the addition of new bowling machines and cameras, it is anticipated that this facility will greatly aid in the development of skill acquisition for all of our squad.

Hunter Sports High School visited on Tuesday 2 April, taking the opportunity to train with our boys in our normal Tuesday afternoon time slot, before playing a mixed junior second 11 game on the school oval on Wednesday. It was a great opportunity to showcase the new facility to their squad and engender positive ties with other elite sports schools. It also gave a few of our new Year 7 players an opportunity to display their talents in their debuts for the school. There were some outstanding performances from during the game. Jack Heslehurst taking 4/25, Kyan Holder taking 2/15 and Kobey Freer scoring an impressive 45.

Both the senior and junior squads played against Hills Sports High School recently at Whalan Reserve.

The juniors fought hard and had a narrow loss, whilst the seniors were outclassed by a Hills team boasting several first grade players. The good news in such scenarios is that all players get to compete against the cream of NSW schoolboy cricketers, gaining invaluable insights in what it takes to play at the top level and developing pathways towards those standards. In saying that, this was a young squad with no Year 12 students and several Year 8 & 9 students. There is a bright future for this young group and the program and we are extremely excited for the 2019/20 season.

Unfortunately rain cancelled the under 15’s 20/20 competition that was scheduled to be played at Hawkesbury and also washed out our Davidson Shield game against Westfields Sports High School. On a more positive note, our second eleven squad will travel to Hunter on Monday 8 April with an overnight stay followed by a game on Tuesday. These trips are fondly remembered by our players as they combine a great squad bonding experience with an opportunity to play good quality cricket against other sports schools.

Congratulations must go to Akash Biradar, Declan Hart and Jamaine Melchior who played in the 2019 NSW CHS School Boys competition for Sydney East who finished as Champions. All the boys performed exceptionally well during the competition with both Akash and Declan finishing in the top five wicket takers. Declan Hart was selected in the NSW CHS 2nd XI team to compete at the NSW ALL Schools Campaign while Mr Laws was the NSW CHS 1st XI Coach who finished as the champions.

Next term will see our fitness program in full swing. This will involve numerous sessions at the beach with sprint training, sand hills and longer esplanade runs mixed with some skill set acquisition. This will complement our Wednesday morning strength and conditioning sessions and ensure that reasonable levels of fitness are maintained in the off-season.

The benefits of the early morning strength and conditioning work have been noticeable and attendance rates have been impressive given the logistics of getting to school at that time of the day. We hope to run an indoor comp Term 3 if the facility at the back of the school is available.

During the off-season, all players will have exposure to the Cricket NSW pathway with several Elite players coaching days planned. These days will take place at the SCG where the Cricket NSW coaching staff provide first class coaching for the day. The day will include Nets sessions, Media and Interview techniques, Nutrition seminars, Current and Ex Australian and NSW player discussions regarding what it takes to be an elite athlete and the day will conclude with a tour of the SCG including the dressing rooms.

We look forward to the pre-season focusing on nutrition, fitness and skill refinement as we prepare for a successful 2019/20 cricket season.

Fitness Centre

Girl Power!!! 2019 has seen an exponential growth in girls using the Fitness Centre, which is so pleasing. Some 30 – 40 girls from a variety of sports including, Football, Rugby, Netball, Swimming and Cheer have been taking advantage of our ‘Girl Only’ Thursday morning session in the Fitness Centre. The girls have been introduced to training programs with a focus on preparation for elite performance including injury prevention, agility and movement patterns, building strength and power development. As a direct result of this, and equally as pleasing, has been the number of these girls who have chosen to add an additional strength and conditioning session to their weekly training schedules, not scared now to mix it with the boys in the gym. Keep up the fantastic work girls. I am also pleased to report, that all 15 TSPs are now being catered for in the Fitness Centre with every sport having the opportunity to participate in their own sports specific training program, either during TSP class time or during their own scheduled sessions throughout the week. Until next term, from the Fitness Centre, keep training hard (and don’t slack off over the holidays)…. and remember…. “Make everyday a PB!” Mr B Hopkins ESHS High Performance Manager

TSP Basketball

2018 was a great year for our Basketball Program. Our Junior and Senior Girls progressed to the final 8 in the State Championships; our Junior Boys were undefeated champions in the Sydney Cup against Private GPS schools, whilst our Senior Boys without our starting point guard were able to make the semi-finals ; our Under 17 Boys were Champions in the 3 on 3 Hustle championships at the National All Schools Championships and our 6ft 7in guard/forward, Tuburu Naivalurua was Div 2 Highest scorer with an average of over 25 and double-doubles in every game at those championships against some of the best schools in Australia. So far this year we have welcomed a great bunch of keen young Year 7 athletes, and some from other years. Young ex-student Dylan Davoodifar has joined the coaching staff to lend his experience in guiding our future development. BNSW State Coach and ex Endeavour Captain, Lauryn Curtin continues to run early morning sessions to provide our players with access to BNSW and BA playing philosophy. Our Senior Boys recently were undefeated Sydney East Champions. Our Senior Girls also achieved this status. Congratulations on an outstanding effort, and we aim to progress through the next knockout games and into the Final 8 series. Congratulations to our multiple players who made Sydney East to represent at the upcoming State Titles in Term 2. In the first weeks next term, we will cement our relationship with both BNSW and the Sports Schools as we have organised a Sports Schools Training Day run by the elite BNSW Coaching Staff led by Brett Coxsedge to be held at Sutherland. We will also be having practise games against Westfields and Erindale College from Canberra, with whom we hold regular development games and share accommodation when at the National All Schools Championships in Melbourne. We have developed a great group of athletes who share a positive attitude. Every player should be able to grow and develop to their potential as we go forward. Paul O’Neill Coach/Mentor

TSP Baseball

TSP Baseball has had a productive start to the year. The squad is hard at training working on improving overall strength and conditioning in the gym, as well as specialised skill development in their preferred positions. Members of the team have experienced great success with six of the team members making their respective club grand finals and four of those Jonothon Wackwitz, Joshua Fitzgerald, Liam Hart, and Patrick Glasheen ending up victorious.

Brad’s NSW team ended up winning the national competition. Fellow team member Bradley Thurecht also had the honour of being selected to play in the NSW country team representing himself well.

The junior players in the program are anticipating their first sports high school gala day of the year, with the senior players looking forward to completion in both the knockout Proud Shield Tournament and Combined Sports High Schools Tournament.

With Term 2 fast approaching the team is excited to begin training in the newly constructed batting cages, with the assistance of a brand new Atec pitching machine. Looking forward to the development of the squad, with the use of a world-class training facility.

TSP Cheerleading

We have had an exciting start to the year with the addition of 10 new cheerleaders to the program across Years 7-10. We have four competitions booked in and we are adding a new bow into the mix to finish off our stunning outfits. It is definitely a family affair this year, with two sets of twins and a set of sisters. When we say our team is like family - we mean it! The standard is the highest we have seen this early on in training and the girls are excited about creating a new routine. TSP Hockey

This year we welcome Year 7 student Annie Flack to the TSP Hockey program. Annie has already proved to be an asset to the program, having settled into the program immediately and improving her skills out of sight.

On 14 March TSP Hockey students spent the day at Sydney Olympic Park for a Sports High School Skill Development Day. High Schools from around the state such as Westfield SHS, Illawara SHS, Hunter SHS and New England Girls School came to take part in a development day run by Richard Willis (Pathway Manager HNSW) and coached by Hockey NSW coaches such as Alan Charlton, Greg Doolan, Paul Schofield and Blair Chambers. Students also had the opportunity to display their skills in front of Hockey NSW CEO David Thompson. The day consisted of a five-station rotation focusing on athlete skill development, a hockey game awareness video presentation and an interview with Hockeyroo Kate Jenner. At the conclusion of the day, the students took part in a 9-aside interschool challenge where Endeavour SHS won 1-0 in both their games against Westfields Sports HS. A great day was had by all.

On 28 March, the TSP Hockey students trialled for the Open boys and girls Sydney East Hockey Team. All students stood out and put in an extremely good effort. The day saw Hannah Russell, Alex Singleton, Chelsea Da Silva, Sienna Da Silva, Christine Flack and Annie Flack make the side. We wish them the best of luck representing Sydney East next term.
