OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

January 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As a family of faith, the Diocese of Charleston is more than a collection of churches and geographic boundaries. We are a community united in Christ, desiring to serve the Lord. Living as faithful disciples of Christ, we must strive to positively impact the lives of our brothers and sisters in both spiritual and physical need. One important way we can accomplish this is to support Christ’s mission through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal “Walk Humbly with your God.”

On the weekend of Feb. 18-19, we will take up a second collection in support of the Appeal. As you are aware, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is the primary source of funding to help sustain and expand the ministries of the 96 parishes, 21 missions, 34 Catholic schools, and multiple agencies throughout our diocese. These critical ministries are all doing important work but there is still much to do.

Please encourage your parishioners to be as generous as possible in this second collection and with their pledge efforts. Through the charitable works, outreach, and education offered as a result of BAA funding, we are making a difference and will continue to do so.

As Christian stewards, let us share the blessings that God has given to us. Together, we can keep the beacon of Christ’s light burning and continue to build up the Kingdom of God here in South Carolina. Thank you for your prayers and generous support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

In the Lord’s Peace,

Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone Bishop of Charleston

901 Orange Grove Road Charleston, SC 29407 (843) 225-7349 Fax: (843) 804-9463 www.sccatholic.org

Sometimes life feels like a three-ring circus. Catechetical leaders find themselves teetering on a tightrope strung between chaotic activity and daily regimens. It may be caused by juggling too many responsibilities or trying to tame the wild excesses of emotional upheaval set off by overload and stress. Being off balance leaves us weary, depressed, and longing for a bit of time on the sidelines. Now is your chance! Take time to step out of the center ring and move to the periphery for a day of rest and renewal. It is the perfect opportunity to restore your equilibrium, refresh your spirit, and reignite your sense of playfulness and joy.

Evangelization is an art form...

Weaving prayer into the daily fabric of one’s life is vital to growing as a disciple of Jesus. Catechists play a key role in teaching children to pray. In this interactive workshop we will explore how to help children understand the value of prayer as well as ways to incorporate different forms and expressions of prayer into catechetical sessions.

As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man. Proverbs 27:17 Imagine Catholic young men gathered from all around the state of South Carolina for a weekend that promises to change your life! This weekend will be a little of everything - from crazy games, to powerful talks, to small group discussions, mass, adoration, reconciliation, and great music. This retreat promises to be unlike any other retreat that you have ever experienced! This retreat is designed for young men in the 9th–12th grades. What makes this retreat so different from any other retreat is that it is designed for young men in mind! This is NOT a vocation retreat! This retreat is based on the verse from Proverbs 27:17. Come learn how to become the man that God has created you to be! You are not meant to be a lone ranger in your faith life! Come see why it is important to have brothers in Christ calling you to be the best you can be! At the same time, make new friends that will encourage and challenge you! This retreat is designed to challenge you not to conform to what the world says a man is, but rather come find out what it takes to be a Godly man! God calls all men to walk the walk, but very few are willing to be Godly men. Just like a prize athlete trains for an event, you are called to discipline, courage, and fortitude in order to be what God is calling you to. This weekend promises not to be an easy weekend if you take it serious, but if you are willing to be real, this weekend will definitely be LIFE CHANGING!!

Our Presenter for the Weekend Doug Tooke

Doug Tooke is the Director of Youth Ministry at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish and the owner of Monarch Catholic Ministries. With Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Philosophy and Theology and a Masters in Pastoral Ministry, he has over 20 years of professional ministry experience. He has spoken at World Youth Day, NCYC, NCCYM, Los Angeles RE Congress and continues to serve as a leader in the field. He is blessed by his wife Becky and five daughters Mederise, Lilian, Joelle, Ainsley and Gwendolyn.

For two simple reasons: 1) We all need to receive “MERCY” and we all need to give “MERCY.” 2) Even though we have finished Pope Francis’ call to the “Year of Mercy,” it is important that we continue to focus on this subject, especially in the times we live in! Pope Francis had this to say in his homily opening the Year of Mercy – “Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: Because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of closeness of God, a time to offer everyone, everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. May the mother of God open our eyes, so that we may comprehend the task to which we have been called; and may she obtain for us the grace to experience this Jubilee of Mercy as faithful and fruitful witnesses of Christ. We are called to be agents of MERCY! Come find out how you can live out this challenge to those around you. With all the hatred and unrest in the world we live in, come find out how you can stand out and be that change that our world so desperately needs! This weekend promises to change your life! Our keynotes for this weekend are going to challenge, encourage, and give you hope! From the high energy of Fr. Leo Patalinghug, the insanity and challenging of Chris Padgett, and the moving and life-changing story of Roy Petitfils! The weekend also will include the music of the Justin Dery band, the Diocesan Youth Evangelization Team leading skits, prayer, and fun games, the Diocesan Missionary Team along with many other speakers leading workshops, and, of course, parishes are given the opportunity to participate in the lip sync contest and team sports during free time.

Father Leo Patalinghug Fr. Leo Patalinghug is a priest member of a community of consecrated life, Voluntas Dei (Latin phrase that means 'The Will of God'). This community is a Secular Institute of Pontifical Rite. He is the Founder, Host, and Director of Grace Before Meals, an international apostolate to help strengthen families and relationship through God's gift of a family meal. He is also establishing a non-profit organization called "The Table Foundation" with the mission to elevate culture and family life,

one meal at a time. Along with his priestly duties, Fr. Leo is the host for the TV Show Savoring our Faith on EWTN, Co-Host for the radio show Entertaining Truth on Sirius XM Radio, bestselling author, contributor for newspaper and magazines, and rated as one of the best speakers for the New Evangelization. Fr. Leo has been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, EWTN, and even the Food Network, where Fr. Leo defeated a world famous chef in a cooking competition called, "Throw Down! with Bobby Flay." His message combines faithful Catholic theology presented in a way that everyone can understand and appreciate. Using his unique background as a chef, a 3rd degree Black Belt Martial Arts Teacher, and former award winning choreographer for a break dancing group, Fr. Leo's presentations, retreats, parish missions, and keynote talks have brought diverse audiences closer to the Lord's Table.

Chris Padgett For over a decade I have been doing ministry around the country. It has been such a blessing. Using the medium of music and message I have attempted to communicate the truth of Christ’s love and forgiveness in a way that makes a difference. First with Scarecrow and Tinmen and then for over the last eight years on my own, I have been doing ministry. It has been amazing to connect with kids and adults in various parishes and youth events around the world. Doing keynotes and concerts, writing articles or giving interviews, it has all been utilized to convey the importance of who Jesus is and what He has, is and will do in the lives of His people. In Easter of 1999 I entered the Roman Catholic Church, which has been one of the most amazing adventures of my life. Many stereotypes and preconceived notions had to be modified for me to make such a transition, but the longer I searched, the more convinced I became. Roy Petitfils

Roy has twenty years of experience working with young people and young adults for twenty years as a youth minister, a professional educator and administrator, school counselor and now as a counselor in private practice. Roy’s blue collar roots, natural humor, contagious enthusiasm and diverse personal and professional background have made him a nationally sought after presenter and consultant. Roy lives with his wife Mindi of 10 years and their two sons Max and Benjamin in Youngsville, Louisiana.

We are really excited that Bishop Guglielmone will be our closing presider on Sunday!

WHAT is SEARCH? The Search for Christian Maturity (simply referred to as Search) is a retreat program offered by the Diocese of Charleston that enables high school students to explore in a deeper way their own faith. This is accomplished by having the searchers come to know themselves in a more personal and spiritual manner and to know God in a more loving and personal way. Search is different from most high school retreats because it is not only for high school students, but led by high school students. This leadership is a form of Peer Ministry. Peers have tremendous impact on each other and we want to foster that in a loving Christian environment. The Search weekend is an experience in Christian living. It is designed to help individuals see their value as members of the Christian community. Search strives to give the students the desire to see and bring Christ into their own lives and encourages them to share Christ with others.

Diaconate Formation Information Meetings

Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Office of the Permanent Diaconate

In communion with the bishop and priests, deacons are ordained for a distinct ministry, which is indicated by their name: they are ordained for service. They function in all three area’s of the Church’s life: transmission of the Word,

celebrating of the sacraments, and in the community’s active love. The deacon, therefore, is more properly defined in terms of who he is rather than of what he does. He is a visible sign of the Church's call to “diakonia” — service. He is

both servant and sacrament.

Candidate Qualifications Practicing Catholic for 5 years or more Between the ages of 30 & 55 Must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist & Confirmation, and

Education Department

Several principals of our schools have asked me to give retreats and/or formation seminars this past fall. I enjoy meeting with both elementary and secondary-school faculty. If you would like to schedule time for you and your faculty to have some quality time together, please do not hesitate to contact me at 843.834.2570. We have a beautiful Pastoral Center in West Ashley and various other places in our state to “get away” for part of a day or the entire day.

Parish Retreats/Seminars

I have also been invited to parishes to do parish-council retreats, staff retreats and formation seminars for parishioners. I find meeting the good people of South Carolina invigorating and a sincere spark in my spiritual formation.

How has God been forming you over Advent and the Christmas seasons? How would you describe your prayer life lately. Some tips after a 20-minute prayer time could be answering any of the following questions:

When you pray, what is the strongest feeling or thought becomes evident?

When did your heart feel at rest?

What do you think the Lord was sharing with you in your prayer time?

I ended my prayer time desiring….

Keeping a prayer journal is an excellent way to see the movement of God in your life…try it, and you may like it. May your ordinary time in the season of the liturgical calendar be extraordinary for you.

Peace and all good,

Sister Kathy Adamski, OSF Manager of Pastoral Formation
