Catechetical Sunday

|WELC OME TO MA RY QUEEN OF HEA VEN IN ELM HU RST, IL 2

Jesus asks Peter in this weekend’s Gospel, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter’s reply is direct, to the point, and an excellent testimony to his faith in Jesus. “You are the Christ,” he replies.

This weekend is Catechetical Sunday. Whether in a Catholic School or CCD/Religious Education/Faith Formation it was our Catechists who first helped us to formulate our answer to this important question. Who will we say that God is to us? In our

actions? In our spoken witness that we have a Christ (messiah/savior)? In our identifying ourselves as His by using the name Christian?

This year’s theme: “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ” calls us to awareness of the need for Christian witnesses and to pray for more to say that they are Christians. In his reflection on this day, Bishop Robert Barron writes:

“We are living in a secularized society which continues to squeeze Christianity to the margins, or completely out of engagement with Jesus Christ and the Church. We are losing baptized Catholics at an alarming rate. According to Pew Research, nearly one-in-four Hispanic adults (24%) are now former Catholics and most of them are “nones”, a term used for people with no religious affiliation. Many parents are saddened to report that their children are leaving the Church after preparing for and celebrating initiation sacraments, and after years of Catholic School or parish religion classes. Figures for Baptisms, Church weddings and weekly Mass attendance are down. Those who self-identify as atheists or agnostics (“Nones”) now make up roughly 23% of the U.S. adult population. Adults, especially young adults, are more likely to say they are not religiously affiliated than in past generations. (Michael Lipka. A closer look at America’s rapidly growing religious ‘nones’. . . , pew research center; 5/5/2017). Also growing in numbers are those who are baptized, and in junior or senior high school, who are increasingly stopping to self-identify as Christians and grouping themselves among the “Nones”.

At the same time, we are blessed with an incredibly generous cohort of faithful who are sacramentally graced to give Gospel witness in their homes, schools and workplace, if only they were invited, trained and supported in their outreach as missionary disciples. It will take the whole Church’s witness and engagement of the “Nones”, inside and outside the walls of the church and across society, to reach out, accompany them, and share the joy of the gospel with them.”

On this Catechetical Sunday, let us pray for our Catechists and for all Christians. May God help us to see the great need for Christian witnesses in our time so that all will say without hesitation, “You are the Christ” and “I am a Christian.”

Fr. Jason

F!:-* F'".!-:'& N%;3 A MESSAGE FROM MARY GLAUDELL; DIRECTOR

“ENLISTING WITNESSES FOR CHRIST” – CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Classes have started and what a joyful group of students. We at Mary Queen of Heaven could not do this without the help and support of our families especially our parents and guardians. However, we would not have a successful program without the dedication of those who answered the call to serve as a catechist or aide. September 16th is Catechetical Sunday and the theme is “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ”.

Please thank your catechists and aides who are witnessing the Gospel to our Mary Queen of Heaven children. Keep them in your prayers as we embark on our faith journey this year.

“I rejoiced greatly when some of you came and testified to how truly you walk in the truth. Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

3 John 1:3-4

PARENTS: Be sure to review all the information in your “packet” and return the acknowledgment form. Also, you can still volunteer to be a witness as an aide or designated substitute. Please contact the Faith Formation Office if you are interested in enlisting as a witness for Christ.

24TH SU NDAY IN ORDIN A RY TIME | SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 5

Come join us, the RCIA Team, as we look into some interesting topics for the month of September. We will be viewing some short videos, some by Bishop Robert Barron, author of the series “Catholicism” which aired on WTTW. Topics we will cover are: · What is Faith? · The Holy Trinity · Who is Jesus Christ · What about the Bible?

We will also be viewing a video each week which speaks to the readings of the day and what we hear in the homily.

You are free to come once, skip a week and come back, or just drop in to see one video and leave. You can be a full fledged Catholic or just curious as to what this is all about. You need not make a commitment at all and you need not be looking to join the Catholic church. Just bring your curiosity.

We meet after 8:30 Mass in room 13 of the school building. We will meet each Sunday of September. Further info will follow each month regarding what we will look at for the month. Come grab a cup of coffee and stay for a while.

MARY QUEEN OF HEAVEN Is joining together with the Eastern DuPage Deanery to Welcome

Deacon Keith Strohm as he presents INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP

What if there was more to being Catholic than simply belonging to a religious organization? What if there was a way to find out who we really are and discover our life’s purpose? The kerygma lies at the heart of all evangelization. The central message of the Christian faith is that all believers are called to proclaim. Deacon Keith will be talking about five paradigm shifts that church leaders must make in order to transform their parishes:

· From an institutional faith to an intentional faith; · From a culture of engagement to a culture of encounter; · From a focus on maintenance to a focus on mission; · From programs to people; · From avoidance to accountability.

Once leadership has made these shifts, they need to connect strategy, people, and operations so that they create a culture of discipleship and mission. This newly created culture and its principles should influence, inform, and guide the actions and activities of the parish. Monday, October 15th 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Immaculate Conception Chapel – 130 Arthur Street in Elmhurst

A free will offering will take place at this event. Registration is required. Please go to easterndupagedeanery.org to sign up by filling out a very short form.

A special invitation is extended to anyone involved in leadership including those involved in the parish council, finance committee, and all other committees and commissions within our parishes in the Eastern DuPage Deanery. All staff members are also encouraged to attend.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD Our young parishioners heard the miracle of Jesus opening the deaf man's ears so that he could hear. We talked about the example Jesus set in this story when he listened to the people who came to him using his ears, eyes, and heart.

Dear God, we thank you today for the gift of hearing. Help us to listen and appreciate all the wonderful sounds around us. Help us to recognize the gifts in each other. Help us to always listen to others with our ears and our heart. Amen.
