Lowering Total Cost of OwnershipIn addition to capacity, speed, and quality concerns, there is also a focus on achieving the lowest possible total cost of ownership. This includes maximizing the re-use of existing infrastructure, minimizing cost and energy requirements on any new build-out, and avoiding conflict with existing 10Gb/s and 40Gb/s signals. To address this, key features of LGS Innovations’ 100G/400G+ solutions include:

» Higher integration and longer transmission reach » Lower network complexity, operational costs, and power consumption » Compatibility with lower-speed transport infrastructures (such as 10G and 40G)

Designed to address the booming bandwidth demands driven by streaming technology, web applications, file sharing, and high definition video, LGS Innovations’ 100G solutions protect the investment to scale networks to 100G/400G+ without performance degradation, and provide an economically viable platform for new optical networking deployments.

Technically Superior OpticsBecause LGS Innovations offers both 100G optical transport and 100G Ethernet technologies, we can provide significantly higher integration and network coverage with lower operational costs and power consumption. The optical component leverages PDM-QPSK with coherent detection for best-in-class 100Gb/s transmission.

LGS Innovations is able to offer the unmatched end-to-end scalability, performance, and low cost-per-bit transport of the Nokia optical solution. Breakthrough innovations such as optimized modulation formats, which reduce the negative effects of dramatic increases in line rates, and coherent detection, which doubles the transported capacity and increases the spectral efficiency allow federal agencies and commercial organizations alike to realize 100G/400G+ communications.

Other technological advances include photonic OAM with Wavelength Tracker to monitor and trace each wavelength at any point in the network, dispersion compensation, and superior tolerance for optical noise. Transmission distances can be extended without costly regeneration, and the signal can pass through more ROADMs. The Nokia optical 100G solutions also boast the best ability to achieve fast wavelength reconfigurations.

Nokia 1830 Photonic Service SwitchThe Nokia 1830 PSS represents a new type of photonic switching access platform for metro wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Implementing Zero-Touch Photonics, they transform traditional WDM into a cost-effective, low-footprint and fully flexible transport layer with complete visibility and control of individual wavelengths. This transformation simplifies broadband service delivery and facilitates bandwidth expansion in optical transport network (OTN) IP networks. The 1830 PSS helps to deploy high-capacity networks and leverage their assets while lowering the cost and saving space and power per transported bit. It plays an important role in maintaining low TCO for 100G optical networks.

The Video AdvantageThe jump from 10G or 40G to 100G and beyond significantly increases transmission speeds, enabling one network fiber to transport 8.8 TB/sec. This accelerated exchange of data can easily enable a dramatic increase in the use of high-bandwidth applications like video in areas as diverse as battlefield medicine, equipment training, VTC, and video surveillance. It only takes one second to transmit a 90-minute HD video using a 100G interface. 100G/400G+ video solutions from LGS Innovations provide intelligent processing of video flows with fast channel change and retransmission to optimize user experience for hosted and walled-garden video and IPTV content. With a high percentage of internet traffic video-based, the changing landscape of networking demands the best-available solutions for video transmission.

High Availability for Continuity of OperationsBoth the 1830 Photonic Service Switch and the 7750 Service Router have numerous “high availability” features that support Continuity of Operations (COOP). Photonic switching means that the 1830 PSS allows full networking flexibility; any service client can be transported over any wavelength in any direction, circumventing any possible interruptions. If a ring is cut, the 1830 PSS will instantly switch traffic onto remaining fiber links. Similarly, the 7750 SR has resilient hardware architecture supporting redundancy and easy replacement of all router hardware elements. Modular software design ensures continuous non-stop routing and service. In addition, the 7750 supports Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (defined by Internet Engineering Task Force RFC 2338), which allows deployment of another router at a separate physical facility to act as a back-up, taking over functionality in case the initial router fails. In both cases, the equipment is designed to keep the 100G network running smoothly despite system malfunctions.

Proven Experience

360networks360networks, one of the largest U.S. providers of wholesale telecommunications services, has selected a distinctive combination of both the 1830 PSS and the 7750 SR to offer greater bandwidth capacity and IP-based Ethernet services across its 18,000 miles of network. This deployment supports 360networks’ delivery of regional Layer 2 Ethernet with very low latency and no congestion to intelligently manage traffic and support new bandwidth-hungry applications, such as live-streaming high-definition video. CBT is a comprehensive and integrated IP/Optical solution spanning the data plane, the control plane, and the management plane. It slashes transport costs and dramatically reduces operational complexity in core networks. “The popularity of such services as high-definition video and interactive gaming are prompting consumers to expect much greater quality and speed from their service providers while enterprise customers are demanding greater reliability for applications such as tele-presence and tele-health,” said Brady Adams, chief technology officer for 360networks. “Nokia’s CBT solution and its 100G proposition help us manage traffic growth and enable us to develop the technologies and platforms that meet our customers’ growing demands.”

It is a critical tool that supports and facilitates research, education, collaboration and innovation and stretches nearly 3,600 miles.

Dresden and Bergakademie Freiberg High-Performance Data CentersNokia technology supported the connection of two high-performance data centers of the Dresden and Bergakademie Freiberg technical universities in Germany. This 37-mile link also used both IP and optical technologies. The extremely high bandwidth of 100G communications technology improves the cooperation between research facilities and facilitates more advanced Cloud service delivery options, paving the way for the proliferation of collaborative multimedia applications. Specifically, this new broadband link will provide the research data centers an environment in which they can evaluate bandwidth-intensive applications and services under realistic conditions.

Nokia’s 100GigE has been validated by independent testing companies Isocore and Ixia. The test results show that a 7750 SR 100GigE IMM implementation provides not only a high-speed trunk, but also offers flexibility and capabilities for high capacity services support while offering quality of service. It passed all tests and remained stable under considerable stress through numerous iterations and test cycles. Nokia’s optical 100G solution has also demonstrated its effectiveness for major operators in the Far East.

Environmentally ResponsibleLGS Innovations is incorporating advances in energy efficiency into its 100G/400G+ offerings. The technology itself is designed for efficiency; 100G wavelengths per bay footprint is a best-in-class benchmark, and a single-carrier coherent architecture is the most energy-efficient configuration for achieving 100G. Pioneering advances in power efficiency are incorporated into each member of the Nokia 7750 SR family, reducing the expense of both powering and cooling when comparing products with less advanced silicon technology. With environmentally sensitive manufacturing processes, careful materials selection, and a view to sustainable product life cycle management, the components of a Nokia 100G network assist our customers in reducing their environmental impact.
