Using familiar and formal with greetings

There are different ways to say how are you in Spanish.

¿Cómo estás? and ¿Qué tal? are familiar greetings.

¿ Cómo está usted (Ud.)? is a formal greeting.

Using familiar and formal with greetings

Familiar greetings are used with: Family Friends Someone younger

Formal greetings are used with: A person you don’t know well(stranger) Someone older Someone for whom you wish to show respect (in

family or position of influence – i.e. President)

Subject Pronouns

Subjects are used at the beginning of a sentence to state who is doing the action.

Subject pronouns can replace a person’s name or description.

Masculine subject pronouns are used for all boys or a group of boys and girls.

Feminine subject pronouns are used for all girls only.

To say where someone is from, use:Subject + Form of ser + de + Country

For example:

I am from the United States.Yo soy de los Estados Unidos.

You (fam.) are from Peru.Tú eres de Perú.

To say what someone likes to do use the form of Gustar and an activity.

GUSTAR WITH ACTIVITIES

Ex. I like to dance. Me gusta bailar.

Ex. You (fam.) like to swim. Te gusta nadar.

When you are talking about a dislike, just add no out front.

Ex. He doesn’t like to sing.No le gusta cantar.

Ex. We don’t like to work.No nos gusta trabajar.
