1 Passive Cooling Technology From Emulex Labs Emulex – Reliability by Design

description

For the last several months, there has been a lively debate in the industry about Emulex’s choice to use heat sinks on our 8Gb/s host bus adapters (HBAs). In contrast, QLogic, another market participant, chose not to put a passive cooling device on their HBA. But their decision can leave customers burned.

Testing Procedure

No Airflow– Server fans blocked off to prevent airflow– Lab HVAC system may have had some effect

Heat Soak– A minimum of 10 minutes was allowed for the parts to reach a stable temp, HBA ports idle of

I/O traffic but ports are looped back

Calibration– Spot temps were checked with a Omega contact thermocouple– HBAs were painted flat black to prevent reflections– The cameras general emissivity was adjusted to .92 to match the reflection properties of the

painted surface and to coincide with the Omega temps

IR Camera– Electrophysics Hotshot HD-S

• 640x480 IR imager – +/-2c accuracy spec - -20c-350c calibrated

Heat stressed components generally exhibit lower reliability and system performance impacting:

– Device reliability– System availability– Network serviceability

Emulex 8Gb/s I/O controllerA operates cooler than QLogic’s 8Gb/s I/O controller, resulting in 166% greater MTBF performanceB

RAS Advantages of Emulex 8Gb/s HBAs

A: Junction Temperature

B: Calculation based on standard Bellcore methodology and assumes same die size
