This has been very successful with many positive comments being received through our office. If you are not yet a member of this group I would encourage you to consider joining. We hope to increase the amount of information that is available to you through this means. I ask that you take some time over the next couple of weeks to remind your child about the importance of being a friendly member of our school community. This week it has been necessary to provide severe consequences to three children for targeting and harassing other students. I want you to be aware that we do take the physical and emotional safety of our children seriously. When we are made aware of situations involving our students, a thorough investigation of victims, perpetrators and witnesses is conducted. A decision is then made as to who is responsible and consequences are provided. The Privacy Act does not allow me to share perpetrators details or consequences to the victim’s parents. Not being able to inform you of another’s consequence does not mean one was not actioned. I know that receiving a phone call stating your child has been a bully is very difficult to hear. I can assure you blam- ing or threatening others does not change the facts and won’t change the consequence. On a brighter note we have beautiful children in our school and community. I always enjoy chatting with them about what is happening in their school and home life. Wayne A MESSAGE FROM OUR DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: Last week we had several opportunities to commemorate and remember those who made sacrifices to enable us to live the lives we do today. Many of our students wore our uniform at the ANZAC day march and marched proudly with us. Our senior leaders ran a moving and respectful assembly last Friday sharing some of our student’s insights and understanding of what ANZAC day is all about. Emu Park State School was also fortunate to receive a donation of several books presented during the town service. Many thanks to the following clubs and organisations for these great titles: Emu Park Lions Club “Do You Still Love Me? In Memory of Ross Coulter – “The Solider” By Chris McNab. Today Interschool Sport begins with many of our Year 5 and 6 students participating in football and netball com-petitions with the others Keppel Coast schools. Good luck to our competitors and thanks to Mrs Karner for her organisation to provide these students with the opportunity to participate. NAPLAN: On the 15, 16 and 17 May Year 3 and 5 students will participate in the NAPLAN tests. These tests consist of a Reading test, Writing test, Language Conventions (Spelling and Grammar) and a Numeracy test. These tests will provide the school and parents with information on how your child is progressing against national standards. Class teachers have been speaking with their students about the tests so they know what to expect. Parents can support and prepare their children by ensuring they are actively and consistently involved in their child’s entire education each and every day from Prep and beyond. Supporting them by ensuring good attend-ance at school, ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, reading to them regularly and listening to them read. If your child is participating in NAPLAN this year please check that they have 2 pencils, an eraser and a great atti-tude towards trying their best. Make sure they have had a healthy breakfast, a good sleep and have remembered their brain break for the day. It would be very helpful for all other students to be in classes, calm and prepared for the day as usual by 8:55 in respect of those students doing their tests. If you have any questions or concerns re-garding these tests please contact your child’s teacher. Ellen A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF L.E.A.P. Hi Emu Park community! Today was a wonderful display of the many and varied opportunities we provide to all learners across our Prep to Year 6 student body. We had close to 80 LEAP pin recipients stand tall and proud on assembly today, a reward for effort, par-ticipation and achievement in specifically designed LEAP Projects. Points accumulate over a student’s time at Emu Park and when they reach specific lev-els, they are acknowledged with a coloured pin to match the level. Some of the Projects include morning reading, robotics, Drumbeat, woodwork, Café, social skills programs such as Friends and All About Me and writing extension. Congratulations to the young people and to their families, especially those arriving to school for the early morning learning sessions. LEAP Projects are unique to Emu Park and are a way of delivering diverse learning opportuni-ties. We are proud of what we do! I take this opportunity to advise the students’ and families of Emu Park that I have received approval for long ser-vice leave, and I will embark on a few of my favourite things for the remainder of the 2018 school year. This is a wonderful opportunity for my family and I and I thank Wayne for making this possible and the wonderful team around us here at Emu Park for their hard work. We are currently in the recruitment process and we anticipate

that the new Head of LEAP should be appointed late next week. I wish to remain work-ing until the position is filled to minimize impacts on kids, staff and families. In the role of Head of LEAP I am privileged to work with so many people and share in the joys and challenges of life. I am fortunate to work with children, staff, families and community groups. Sometimes, I feel like I have 200 children of my own (instead of 2) as we constantly think and plan and try our best to support the many needs of the young people in our care. We have very clear processes and procedures for ensuring that all information is made transparent to my incoming replacement, allowing for a smooth transition for the children, families, staff and our many external agencies. This school is in incredible hands with Wayne, Ellen & Kel at the helm and it is at an exciting time of transformation. Our well-being aspect of the school is led by all staff but special mention to our committed Guidance Officer, Lori Harrison. I go on leave confi-dently knowing it is onwards and up for all of you and the young learners of Emu Park. Thanks for taking the time to read our school newsletter and LEAP News. Claire

A MESSAGE FROM OUR MASTER TEACHER: Many of our Year 6 leaders have jumped at an opportunity to coach in classrooms before school begins. Coach-ing varies but mostly incorporates assisting with reading, building fine motor skills or writing. To be able to coach, students had to make a commitment to turn up on time, every time, to class. They need to bring a happy attitude, follow instructions and build relationships with the little ones they are coaching. The year 6 leaders will be given lessons on how to give positive feedback and how to coach. They are expected to treat this opportunity as their first ‘part-time’ job, minus the wage ;)

Please come along to say ‘hello’, have a look at my room and the counselling room. I’ve also invited a number of agencies that support our local community. You may want to speak to them to see what they offer. We are going to have a representative from Livingstone Shire Council who can let you know about iCare, and the iCare packages available.
