There is also a RSL march on Sun-day 18th April lining up at 230pm ad-jacent to the fire station in Evan Strret Penrith This is an alternative to the dawn service on Anzac Day

school have taken on the reponsibility of signing the Beacon Foundation lsquoNo Dole Charterrsquo for the 7th year running

The Beacon Foundation is a nation-al not-for-profit organisation that seeks to influence the attitudes and culture of Australians so that each young per-son develops an independent will to achieve personal success for them-selves and their community

The Beacon Foundation works with 115 schools and Nepean High is rec-ognised in the top 16 across the coun-try This is due to the leadership of the

school and the support of the local businesses

Ms Denise Charlier the Educa-tion and Business Liaison officer at the school has won the 2009 Beacon Co-ordinator of the year from the 115 schools across Australia

Closure of Mitchellrsquos Pass

Mitchellrsquos Pass between Lennox Bridge and Emu Plains is remaining closed until further notice in the inter-est of public safety as a result of a rock fall that occurred on a section of Mitchellrsquos Pass due to heavy rain on the weekend of 6 and 7 February

The investigation is likely to take up to 6 months Mitchellrsquos Pass remains open from Glenbrook Road to local traffic only

There were some excellent speeches including Ms Kate Murphy from the Beacon Foundation who was an ex student from Nepean High She encouraged the students to make the most of their opportunities

River Road Riparian

projectIn the past nine months bushland

management works within the River Road Riparian Corridor have included

Bushland contractor work north of the M4 road bridge focussing on spraying extensive areas of weed vines in particular Madeira vine main-taining and extending areas that were worked in the previous year and main-taining planted areas where secondary weeds were encroaching

Bushland contractor work south of the M4 road bridge within areas of remnant bushland The areas were identified where there is a native can-opy and the potential for regenera-tion of shrubs and native ground layer

plants Since weeds have been controlled eg Lan-tana in these areas there is an abundance of native regeneration

The Conservation Vol-unteers of Australia (CVA) National Green Jobs Corps have also undertaken weed removal works predomi-nantly Lantana in an area immediately south of the M4 road bridge Once they have completed this work they will be planting local provenance natives back into the area to assist with

stabilising the river bank Council is grateful for the work that these young people are assisting with as they learn lsquoon the jobrsquo new skills about contribut-ing to the environment

Council is also pursuing any grant funding opportunities available to sup-plement Council funding with a view to accelerating the works program

Airing of Quilts

The Arms of Australia Inn Muse-umrsquos grounds will again be decorated with hundreds of wonderful quilts on

Saturday April 10 and Sunday April 11 The quilts are all made by the

Caring Hearts Community Quilters and are made for charities in the lo-cal area and will be on show at the Inn from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 12 to 4pm on Sunday

The 12 dedicated self funded la-dies have made in the vicinity of 600 quilts since 2005 when the group was started This year they are working on quilts for the Blue Moun-tains and Springwood Hospitals for their Palliative care wards and the

Womenrsquos Crisis Centre in Richmond In addition to the magnificent quilts

there will be music from the Swing West Jazz Orchestra on Saturday from 12-1pm and the Concert Band on Sun-day from 12-1pm

The Emu Plains Lions Club will again be providing a Sausage Sizzle and there will be trading and gift stalls raffle and Devonshire teas

Blue Mountains City Council com-missioned a geotechnical assess-

ment of the site which has now been completed

Mayor Cr Adam Searle stated ldquoThe assessment has concluded that the road is not safe to reopen due to the likely occurrence of further rock falls and the major risk this poses to users of the roadTherefore Mitchells Pass Rd will need to remain closed for an indefinite periodrdquo

Mayor Searle advised that Coun-cil plans to undertake further detailed investigation of the stabilisation works required to safely reopen the road and the costs associated with these works anticipating that the costs will be significant

ldquoAt the conclusion of these inves-tigations which is likely to take 4-6 months further advice and information will be provided for the Councilrsquos con-siderationrdquo he said

ldquoUntil this time the section of Mitch-ells Pass Rd between Lennox Bridge and Emu Plains will remain closed to all public access (as per Section 115(2) of the Roads Act 1993) until otherwise advisedrdquo

New Vet at Orchard Hills

I would like to introduce myself as the new vet at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital When Janet Colless retired in January I purchased the business and I am thrilled at the opportunity to care for your furry family members

I grew up in the Blue Mountains and after graduating from Sydney Uni-versity with first class honors I worked in the Campbelltown region the Blue Mountains and Liverpool in general practice For the last year and a half I

Exhibition of early sporting memorabilia

This year marks the 200th anniver-sary of the beginning of Lachlan Mac-quariersquos term as the fifth governor of the colony of New South Wales

The National Trust Heritage Fes-tival 2010 will be holding a variety of community-hosted events across met-ropolitan and regional NSW

To mark the anniversary the Arms of Australia Inn Museum will be hold-ing a display of early sporting pho-tographs which will include cricket rowing harness racing and basketball as well as other items of sporting inter-est from the Nepean area

Seniors Fire SafetySeniors (those aged 65 years and

older) are more likely to be injured or killed in a house fire than any other group Therefore the NSWFB sees it as vital to try to help seniors to reduce the potential for tragic situations in the future The majority of residential fires begin in the kitchen and are often the result of cooking being left unattended on the stove Other common causes of fire include electrical appliance fail-ure overloading powerpoints and ap-pliances not being switched off at the power point

NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mul-lins said there were simple steps that seniors and everyone else could take to improve safety measures in the home

Install and maintain photoelectric smoke alarms which can be hard-wired and interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound

If yoursquore unable to maintain your smoke alarms due to infirmity then contact your local fire station Fire-fighters assist the elderly to check that smoke alarms are working and change batteries The SABRE (Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement for the

Elderly) program is designed to sup-port the elderly residing in their own homes and without family relatives or friends who are able to assist to live independently and remain valuable assets in the community

Develop and practice a home escape plan regularly and if you live alone involve your neighbours

Install deadlocks that can be opened from the inside without keys Where the door needs a key to oper-ate leave keys in locks or nearby so that you can find them easily in an emergency

If you have difficulty hear-ing then consider installing special smoke alarms which have a flash-ing strobe light and vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow while you sleep and will activate when the smoke alarm sounds
