Appendix A - Data Sources and Calculations

Occupation DataEMSI occupation employment data are based on final EMSI industry data and final EMSI staffing patterns. Wage estimates arebased on Occupational Employment Statistics (QCEW and Non-QCEW Employees classes of worker) and the AmericanCommunity Survey (Self-Employed and Extended Proprietors). Occupational wage estimates also affected by county-levelEMSI earnings by industry.

Location QuotientLocation quotient (LQ) is a way of quantifying how concentrated a particular industry, cluster, occupation, or demographic groupis in a region as compared to the nation. It can reveal what makes a particular region unique in comparison to the nationalaverage.

Job Postings DataIn partnership with EMSI's parent company CareerBuilder and other third party aggregators, EMSI collects its job postings databy scraping approximately 30,000 websites. EMSI then cleans the data and applies a two-step deduplication process to presentan estimate of total unique postings. Normalization of data fields is performed using machine-learning technologies, whichleverage not just job postings data but also CareerBuilder's extensive database of résumés and profiles.

Hires DataEMSI produces hires data using a proprietary methodology which incorporates data from the Quarterly Workforce indicators(QWI) and American Community Survey (ACS).
