RESPONSIBILITY: Reporting to the Coordinator of Shelter Services, the Shelter Worker (SW) will provide assistance, support and advocacy to individuals accessing the shelter who identify as male or without a gender, “Non-Binary,” and are comfortable in a men’s shelter. The Shelter Worker will focus on building and maintaining relationships, providing a safe place to sleep; assisting in diversion, connecting to community support services for housing, and mental health and addiction when identified by the individual based on their needs.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education requirements: A post-secondary degree or diploma in human services or related discipline (minimum 2 years); or a post-secondary degree or diploma in human services or related field (1 year) plus 1 year experience working in the mental health/addictions field or 1 year experience working with marginalized populations.

Language requirements: Fluency in English is essential. Fluency in French is an

asset. Priority will be given to candidates who are bilingual in French and English as per our French Language Service Plan.

certification required

UNION MEMERSHIP: This position is included within the collective bargaining unit, (Ontario

Public Service Employees Union, Local 666).

SALARY: $17.9802 /hour

COMPÉTENCES : Exigences en matière d’études : un diplôme postsecondaire en services à la personne ou dans une discipline connexe (au moins deux ans); ou un diplôme postsecondaire en services à la personne ou dans une discipline connexe (un an) avec une année d’expérience dans le domaine de la santé mentale ou de la toxicomanie ou une année d’expérience dans un poste auprès des populations marginalisées.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Coordinator of Shelter Services, the Shelter Worker (SW) will work within a low barrier environment and provide assistance, support and advocacy to individuals accessing the service when identified by the individual based on their needs.

The SW will be required to work days, evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides support to individual to assist in their recovery

Providing assistance and support to individuals.

Developing and maintaining effective individual/ staff relations

Assisting all individuals with referrals to support services as identified by the individual

Recognizing and respecting individuals that are accepting service self-direction

Demonstrate harm reduction and recovery oriented practice (ROP) philosophy andpractices within daily work and interactions

Outreach services as required; building relationships with potential service recipientsand referring agencies

Participates in the safety of the program participants at all times.

2. Assists in the daily functions of the shelter

Ensuring individuals follow program rules and regulations.

Completing daily documentation as per program requirements

Cleaning/Sanitation duties as per shift rotation.

Communicate with medical services when medical issues are identified

Completion of a diploma or degree in a human services area (minimum 2 years).

experiencing homelessness and a demonstrated ability to form rapport with target population.

Experience within the Mental Health/Addictions setting considered an asset.

Certification in First Aid & CPR; Certification in NVCI an asset

Bilingualism (French/English) is essential for 50% of positions
