POTTERY/Cont’d from Page 1spring quarter and a meet-the-art-ist reception will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in the LRC. The event is free to the community and refreshments will be served.

Preston was born and raised in southern Ohio. After years of work-ing in the construction industry, he decided to go back to college.

“Southern State Community College was a good fit for me be-

cause the cost was very affordable and in close proximity to where I lived,” he said. “I walked into art class that first day and thought ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ I did not really consider myself ar-tistic.

“My instructor, Nancy Ache, showed us how to throw clay on the wheel and that was it – I was bitten and forever changed. My passion and love for clay has been

driving me forward ever since.“Clay is an amazing and mag-

nificent medium. There is just something magical about putting your hands in mud and being able to create a piece of artwork. Most of what I love and make is func-tional pottery. I want you to be able to touch it and use it, as well as ad-mire it.

“I believe there is a piece of me in every pot that I make and when

you are attracted to a pot it is be-cause there is something in com-mon between you and me, and we have made a connection. When I make pots, I want them to be like people—all beautiful and unique.”

For more information about hours for the Eric Preston ex-hibition, please contact Carissa Thatcher, LRC manager, at 1-800-628-0307, ext. 3681, or [email protected].

Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

“Annie” is directed by Rainee Angles, with musical direction by David White. It will be performed Aug. 3-5, 2012.

For more information about “Annie,” the rehearsal schedule and other audition information, please visit www.sscctheatre.com.

ARTISTS/Cont’d from Page 1This year’s exhibit features three

divisions: competitive, student com-petitive and non-competitive. Local artists were invited to submit entries in a range of categories, including painting, drawing, mixed media,

printmaking, photography, sculp-ture, stained glass, pottery, jewelry, fine-art craft and woodcraft.

“This exhibition has shown steady growth in size and quality over the past 12 years and it quickly became my favorite in the series

of exhibitions that we host each year,” said Werline. “It is not only an opportunity for local artists to have their work exhibited, but also is an opportunity for the public to discover the rich artistic talent that is unique to the Appalachian region

of southern Ohio.”The public is invited to view the

exhibition from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. As the sched-ule is subject to change, please call Amanda Lewis at 1-800-628-7722, ext. 3520, to confirm gallery hours.

A Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides walk/run will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Southern State Community College’s Fayette Campus, 1270 U.S. Route 62 SW, Washington C.H. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and two routes will be available: a 5K (3.1-mile) route and a 10K (6.2-mile) route. The walk/run will begin at 10 a.m.

The event is being organized by the college’s SSCC Respiratory Club under the direction of assis-tant professor and program director Chyane Collins.

“I have helped treat patients with Cystic Fibrosis and, for the past six years, I have been helping teach my students how to diagnose and treat those with CF,” said Collins, who stated an additional motivator is the memory of her friend Mark Garland. “Mark was a good friend of mine and my extended family through high school, 4-H and FFA activities.” Gar-land’s parents, Jim and Melissa Garland, helped plan last year’s event and again have joined in on the plan-ning for the upcoming walk/run.

Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s annual nationwide walk/run event that raises money to help support vital CF research and care programs.

“Locally we raised $4,000 last year with our Great Strides event,” said Collins. “It’s more important than ever that we raise every dollar we can to fight CF. It truly takes the entire community to make the event a

success. We’re so grateful for every volunteer, donor and corporate sponsor who supports Great Strides.”

For more information about participating in or helping to sponsor the event, please call Chyane Collins at 740-333-5115, ext. 5620, or [email protected]. Participants may also register online at www.cff.org/great_strides/.
