EMGA Update 03 August 2017 No. 20-17
Vic Kregel
Tournament Update Thank you to the 98 players that were brave/optimistic enough to challenge the weather and play in today's Round 1 of the 2017 Vic Kregel Championship. My admiration to all of those that showed up in shorts. Fortunately, Mother Nature did shine down on us with only about a 15 min shower around our 4th hole. Attached are the results from today. Remember we are paying 1st through 5th place for both Net and Gross in each flight (you can only win one or the other) so good luck in Round 2. The Kregel trophies will go to the Gross winner of the Championship flight and the Net winners of the other 4 flights. If you were not able to play today, the sign-up sheet for Round 2 is still in the book in the senior locker room. While you will not be eligible for any of the Net or Gross purse, you will still be eligible for any Pins and Skins winnings. The EMGA will also be hosting a lunch after next week's round. As we only have 5 slots left, please e-mail Don Knight at [email protected] if you have not yet RSVP'ed for lunch. Please also e-mail Don if you will no longer be attending lunch to help save the Club money. With registration down this year, we have every dollar budgeted with no management reserve. On a sad note, we unfortunately had to disqualify six players today for turning in improper scorecards - all due to not posting a score for every hole. This is not something your Tournament Committee took lightly in doing. However, after a lengthy discussion we felt our allegiance needs to be with the 92 other players that did follow the rules, just as we have done in the past on other tournaments. Those rules are included below. So please, please, please - in all future Tournaments remember. It is the Players responsibility to ensure his scorecard is properly filled out. Once it is turn into the Tournament Committee, we are bound by 6-6c to judge it as submitted.

6-6. Scoring in Stroke Play
a. Recording Scores: After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker must sign the score card and hand it to the competitor. If more than one marker records the scores, each must sign for the part for which he is responsible.
b. Signing and Returning Score Card: After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible.
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 6-6b: Disqualification.
c. Alteration of Score Card: No alteration may be made on a score card after the competitor has returned it to the Committee.
d. Wrong Score for Hole: The competitor is responsible for the correctness of the score recorded for each hole on his score card. If he returns a score for any hole lower than actually taken, he is disqualified. If he returns a score for any hole higher than actually taken, the score as returned stands.
Your Tournament Committee

Kregel Tournament Luncheon Plan your day so that you can stay and enjoy the luncheon after golfing on August 10th. First, I ask sincerely for you to show our speakers the courtesy of staying in the Eisenhower room after you have eaten and listening to what they have to say. I was a bit disappointed last year when a number of men ate and left. Jim Lamberson has put together an excellent agenda for the luncheon. We will be presenting Mr. Jim Smith, Vic Kregel’s son-in-law and a great supporter of EMGA, with an Honorary Membership in EMGA. All past presidents of EMGA in attendance will be asked to come forward to participate in the presentation. Our guest speaker will be Don Horn, former Green Bay Packer and Denver Bronco quarterback. Don graduated from San Diego State University where he quarterbacked the Aztecs to an undefeated season and the No. 1 ranking “Small College” NCAA National Championship in 1966. He was named first team All-American QB by the Associated Press. He played for head coach Don “Air” Coryell at SDSU. He was a No. 1 draft pick by Vince Lombardi’s Packers, a member of the Super Bowl II World Champion Packers in 1967 and twice named the NFL Player of the Week while understudying the legendary Bart Starr in 1968 and 1969. He was traded to the Denver Broncos in 1971 where he quarterbacked for the Broncos in their developmental years with greats such as Haven Moses, Floyd Little and others. This preceded the presence of Craig Morton and the emergence of John Elway, the “Three Amigos” and other Bronco greats. Unfortunately, he suffered a severe knee and shoulder injury midway through the season with Denver which ended his time with the Broncos. Today Don Horn invests his time and energy supporting U.S. military veterans, retired professional athletes with health issues and speaking about character and patriotism across the country. I am absolutely sure that you will enjoy hearing Don Horn speak. Jim Barager ([email protected]) President, EMGA

Home & Away This week (Wednesday, 2 August) we played at the Club at Pradera. Though they play a different match points system than we do, we had a lot of fun. We count three points per match (one each for front 9, back 9, and total) and they count 1 point per hold (18 points per match). They use 90% of handicap and play off the low handicap of the foursome. Using that points system, Pradera bested the EMGA team 56.5 points to 51.5 points. Converting those number to our three-point system, we lost by a 9.4 to 8.6 margin. Adding that result to the Home score of 14 points to 4, we end up with an overall bragging rights points victory this year of 22.6 to 13.4. They don't pay out Best Net Ball or Skins at Pradera, but only team victories based on the points. The EMGA team of Bill Ebersohl and Joe Staten tied for first place with 12.5 points. They split the first and second place cash prize with a Pradera team, pocketing $45 each. Congratulations Bill and Joe.
We will play Kissing Camels on Monday, 14 August at home and Tuesday, 15 August at Kissing Camels Golf Course. We will wear white shirts at home and Blue shirts at Kissing Camels. We will have an 8:00 shotgun start at home (check in about 7:00 at the Falcon's Nest) and play at 8:30 at Kissing Camels (get there in time for coffee, pastries, and warmup before the shotgun start). We will field a team of 18 players this year. The team includes Joe Beaudoin, Roger Beusch, Marty Bunker, Alan Crow, Bill Ebersohl, Ron Fortin, Tony Goodman, Joe Hampton, John Hayes, John Horsman, Jim Huffman, Mike Knaub, Don Knight, Jim Prior, Joe Staten, Fred Steffers, John Szostak, and John Weidner. If you can't play, please contact us as soon as you know.
