Series Editors
Hamid BeladiUniversity of Texas at San Antonio, USA
Kwan ChoiIowa State University, IA, USA
SynopsisIn recent years, the globalization of financial asset markets has become increasingly important
and has led to closer linkages among these markets. New global investment instruments
such as sovereign credit default swaps, exchange traded funds, and bond markets have been
created, enabling investors to fine tune their investment portfolios to their likings. Financial
investments have been further expanded to include real asset investments such as real estate
investments. It is important for global investors to make proper decisions in assessing theseinvestments in their asset allocations and for policymakers who can provide sound policy
guidance to cope with the globalization of the financial markets. This volume contributes to
a fresh perspective on the economic and finance research on international financial markets
and also the commodity markets. It enables scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to better
understand the changes and dynamics of commodity and financial asset trading following the
recent global financial crisis. This volume contains a comprehensive analysis of international
financial markets through a series of essays from leading researchers in the field.

Synopsis African American Males in PreK-12 Schools: Informing Research, Practice, and Policy
presents a comprehensive viewpoint on preK-12 schooling for African American males.
Including theoretical, conceptual, and research based chapters, this edited volume offers
readers compelling evidence of the education challenges and successes for this studentpopulation. Each chapter provides a richer perspective of the experiences of African American
males throughout their elementary and secondary education. Additionally, each chapter
includes strong implications for education research, practice, and policy, as well as concrete
recommendations to important stakeholders, such as educators, school counselors, parents,
etc. Collectively, the contributors communicate throughout the edited volume that educational
change is needed and that educational success is attainable for African American males. It is
intended that the edited volume will help inform education research, practice, and policy as
they relate to African American males. Equally important, it is envisioned that the readers will
develop a greater interest in the education of African American males.

Education for a Knowledge
Society in Arabian GulfCountriesInternational Perspectives on Education and Society,Volume 24
Editors
Alexander W. WisemanLehigh University

Saleh A. AlshumraniKing Saud University
SynopsisThe worldwide shift towards a knowledge society and information based economy requires
educational policymakers to re-evaluate their understanding of the knowledge and skills
students need in order to achieve national development goals. This shift has influenced
curriculum development, teacher preparation, and the role of formal schooling in creating
lifelong learners and an educational culture, which reflects both national development interests
and global norms. The Arabian Gulf countries, which largely comprise the Gulf Cooperation
Council (GCC) member countries, include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, theUnited Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Most of these Gulf countries have embarked on bold
national experiments to pilot technology and teaching in their schools as a way to transition
to knowledge societies. Their national interests and expectations have increasingly focused
on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in education and both the
regional and global context in which Gulf societies, economies, and political systems operate.

The Sustainability of
Restorative Justice Advances in Sustainability and Environmental Justice,Volume 14

Liam LeonardInstitute of Technology, Sligo, Republic of Ireland
SynopsisThere is a growing acknowledgment among professionals and academics that we need to
develop other responses to crime. This book provides an insight into the first introduction of
restorative justice to the criminal justice system in the Republic of Ireland. By analysing six
case studies of restorative conferencing events, the authors aim to address the salient question
‘How does restorative conferencing for young offenders facilitate an exchange process
whereby forms of reparation and social regulation may be achieved?’. The restorative justice
‘process’ has much to offer and the authors argue that this concept, particularly as it centres onthe greater use of non custodial sentences, will bring about changes not only in the law but will
have significant implications for social regulation.

Case Western Reserve University, USA
Danielle P. ZandeeNyenrode Business Universiteit, Netherlands
Lindsey GodwinChamplain College, USA
Michel AvitalCopenhagen Business School, Denmark
Brodie BolandCase Western Reserve University, USA
SynopsisThe Advances in Appreciative Inquiry series advocates a science of positive human
organizations, positive relationships and positive modalities of change, in order to create
world benefit for individuals, organizations and communities. The book series is dedicated
to the advancement of Appreciative Inquiry as an approach to organizational and human
development, and as an interdisciplinary, non-deficit theory of positive change processes in
human systems. Guided by the ethos of Appreciative Inquiry, the book series supports an
ongoing, distributed inquiry into the true, the good, the better and the possible. It is dedicated
to advancing a “scholarship of the positive” and “positive scholarship.” The book series
facilitates an emergent dialogue within the social sciences and supports innovative and
challenging scholarly work. The fourth volume, Organizational Generativity: The Appreciative
Inquiry Summit and a Scholarship of Transformation, revolves around three fundamental
aspects of organizational generativity, namely: generative knowledge and organizational
life, collective action and the appreciative inquiry summit, and sustainable inter-generative
dynamics. Appreciative Inquiry has touched and inspired the work of thousands who apply itsdevelopment principles in a wide range of settings including industry, government, spiritual and
not-for-profit organizations.

Contemporary Perspectives
on Organizational SocialNetworksResearch in the Sociology of Organizations,Volume 40
Editors
Dr Daniel BrassUniversity of Kentucky, USA
Dr Giuseppe LabiancaUniversity of Kentucky, USA
Dr Ajay MehraUniversity of Kentucky, USA
Dr Daniel HalginUniversity of Kentucky, USA
Dr Stephen BorgattiUniversity of Kentucky, USA
SynopsisSocial network analysis has transformed the study of organizations over the past 30 years.
Rather than focus on individuals or teams, network scholars view the organization as a nexus
of relationships. As its popularity increases, the scholarship is evolving in many directions
including new theory on network dynamics, multilevel thinking, multiplex networks, digital
networks, instrumental and affective ties, and cross-cultural considerations, in addition to
advances in methods and measures, and new organizational applications. This compendium
of essays points the way to contemporary issues in organizational social networks. Research
in the Sociology of Organizations is an established international, peer-reviewed series that
examines cutting edge theoretical, methodological and research issues in organizational
studies. The series is especially concerned with specifying the unique contributions of
sociological theories and research techniques to the analysis of organizations. In addition to
publishing high quality original research, each volume aims to foster debate about the value
of new theories and research to the growing international community of organizational studies
scholars. Each volume is designed around carefully selected and interesting themes that
aim to facilitate the development of new research communities and perspectives within theorganizational studies field. All contributions are peer reviewed to ensure high quality, and are
individually downloadable through your library website, enabling wide distribution and easy
access.

Understanding Terrorism:
A Socio-EconomicPerspectiveContributions to Conflict Management, PeaceEconomics and Development, Volume 22
Editors
Raul CarusoCatholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan, Italy
Andrea LocatelliCatholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan, Italy
SynopsisThe recent proliferation of studies on terrorism has brought scholars from different fields
and approaches to converge on this phenomenon. While the renewed attention on the
problem, especially in the wake of 9/11, has produced valuable contributions, it has also led
to unintended consequences for the academic community. Most importantly, the impressive
amount of scientific publications involved as a side effect the growth of parallel, separate and
impermeable bodies of literature. As a result, economists, social and political scientists have
developed theories, evidence and, in a sense, even a peculiar jargon of their own. Starting
from this assumption, the book aims to bring scholars with different expertise and background
around the same table, showing how their individual perspectives can contribute to a broader
understanding of the issue at stake. In other words, the aim that inspires the book is thatthe multi-disciplinary nature of terrorism requires a concerted effort by social sciences – in
particular, economics and political science. The book deals with a number of issues – from
the definition and forms of terrorism, to its economic determinants, from the distribution and
forecast of terror attacks to the measurement of their impact on societies.

The United States in DeclinePolitical Power and Social Theory, Volume 26
Editor
Richard LachmannUniversity at Albany, State University of New York, NY, USA
SynopsisIs the United States in decline? If so, what are the causes and dimensions of that decline and is
it irreversible? Will American decline be accompanied by the rise of a new hegemon? To what
extent are that rise and decline merely concurrent processes, determined by forces internal
to each polity, or are American decline and the rise of its competitors both manifestations of
a single global dynamic? The essays in this volume address those questions by examining
the rise of finance in the U.S. and worldwide, the U.S. government’s actual industrial strategy,
China’s failure so far to challenge the dollar’s status as the world reserve currency, and the
contradictions in American strategic doctrine as the Pentagon responds to failures in recent
wars and to China’s growing power. Two articles address the restructuring of politics in the U.S
since the 1960s to explain governmental paralysis and the simultaneous disorganization and
political success of corporate elites. This volume concludes with a comparison of U.S. decline
and that of its once superpower rival, the Soviet Union. The contributors to this volume clarify
our understanding of the current state and future trajectory of the United States and the effect
of decline on its citizens and the world.

SynopsisThis volume of Research in the Sociology of Work starts with a deceptively simple question of,
“Do events and experiences during adolescence influence the work outcomes of individuals
when they reach adulthood?” While at first glance simple, the question has a wide range of
theoretical and practical implications, which are covered in a compelling set of contributions.
The volume contains new and exploratory research related to this fundamental question and
highlights the opportunities for further research on the topic.

Contemporary Destination
Governance: A Case Study ApproachBridging Tourism Theory and Practice, Volume 5

Synopsis“Governance is about managing networks”. This quote from political scientist Rod A.W.
Rhodes pioneered a whole series of governance studies in different disciplines. Accordingly,
destination governance describes the collective management of tourism destinations.
Promoting collective action in tourism destinations means dealing with a myriad of different
actors and applying various instruments. Probably the most basic requirement is to takeinto account the peculiarities of every single destination. Therefore, this book approaches
the issue of contemporary destination governance from a case study point of view focusing
on 16 destinations. Contrast to other publications in the field of destination governance, the
book concentrates on the discussion of cases and the peculiarities of destinations which
influence the destination governance. It demonstrates how different theories from the fields of
organizational studies, strategic management, tourism research and sociology can enlighten
our understanding of particular real world situations. Last but not least the bottom-up approach
supports practitioners and students by making otherwise complex theories accessible to a
broader audience.

Tourism as an Instrument of
Development: A Theoreticaland Practical StudyBridging Tourism Theory and Practice, Volume 6
Editors
Eduardo Fayos-SolàUnited Nations World Tourism Organization
Maria D. AlvarezBogaziçi Üniversitesi
Chris CooperOxford Brookes University
SynopsisThis book, which has benefited from professional know-why and know-how of its authors
in the United Nations World Tourism Organization and several universities, articulates and
debates the concept and methodology of tourism assisted development. The study examines
the theoretical bases of contemporary real case development projects and illustrates the way
tourism can effectively and efficiently focus on development issues, while minimizing undesired
impacts on the natural and cultural environments. It analyzes the key role of institutions, both
in setting the framework for tourism competitiveness and sustainability and in addressing the
main strategic concerns of development. Theoretical considerations on the role of tourism as
a tool for development related public and private policies are followed by a methodological
framework for tourism policy and governance and application of these in real world situations.
Several chapters offer practical recommendations, particularly in relation to tourism strategic
positioning, competitiveness, and sustainability, and case studies exemplify a range of issues
raised in tourism assisted development.
