Synopsis

The Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2009 hashighlighted the resilience of the financial marketsand broader economies from the developingworld. This outcome owes much to the bitterexperience and economic strategies developedand implemented at both a national andinternational level following the Asian FinancialCrisis of 1997-1998. The objective of this volume

is to investigate and assess the impact of and response to thecrisis from an emerging markets perspective, including assetpricing, contagion, financial intermediation, market structure andregulation. Our hope is that the assembled papers will offer clearinsights into the complex financial arrangements that now linkemerging and developed financial markets in the current economicenvironment. The volume spans four dimensions: first, a series ofbackground studies offer explanations of the causes and impactsof the crisis on emerging markets more generally; then, implications are considered. The third and final sections provideinsights from regional and country-specific perspectives.

The Impact of the Global FinancialCrisis on Emerging Financial MarketsContemporary Studies in Economic and Financial AnalysisVolume 93

Jonathan BattenHong Kong University of Science & Technology, Hong Kong

Peter G. SzilagyiUniversity of Cambridge, United Kingdom

Synopsis

The theme of this volume is “Recovering fromFinancial Crisis.” The lead chapter sets thetheme by giving insight into the recent surge ingoing-private transactions (and thecorresponding reduction of Initial PublicOfferings). The author develops evidence(reaching back 25 years) that going-privatetransactions tend to be inversely related to the

return on diversified equity portfolios, suggesting that the recentupswing in going-private transactions in the USA is not simply theresult of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. The second chapteroffers insights into the recent round of hedge fund failures. Then, the third chapter offers new insights into some of the morecontroversial aspects of private equity arrangements – whenprivate equity arrangements are expressed as real options, theactions of the managing partners are more readilyunderstandable. The fourth chapter offers insights into whycommodity producers (such as oil companies) choose not tohedge, so that their stock can offer shareholders the opportunity togain valuable diversification benefits, using the stock as a pureplay in the commodity. Remaining chapters offer further insightsinto recent trends in IPO activity, lease versus purchase decisions, agency costs, project risk, and emerging markets.

Synopsis

Governance is very much a current concern inthe public interest. The global economicrecession, from which we are just emerging, hashighlighted failures in governance and regulationwith much blame being laid at the feet ofregulators and demands for perpetrators to besanctioned accordingly. A key to managing theprevention of future financial crisis is concerned

with the recognition and regulation of a truly global market forfinance, trade, labour etc. and accepting that there are differentperspectives from different parts of the world. Published inassociation with the Social Responsibility Research Network,Volume 2 in this new and exciting series recognises these issuesand takes a global interdisciplinary perspective to the matter ofgovernance in the business environment. Contributions rangefrom the UK, Portugal and Belgium to Brazil, Japan, China andMalaysia, and topics of investigation include: governance and themanagement of global markets; governance mechanisms ofstrategic alliances in the Japanese car industry; multinationalcorporations and democratic governance; market governance togovernance in the market – a return to the old order; and a socio-legal framework for governance.

Synopsis

Genetically modified (GM) crops are producedusing plant biotechnology to select desirablecharacteristics in plants and transfer genes fromone to another. Scientists are introducing genesto give plants resistance to herbicides, insects, disease, drought and salt in the soil. Theapplication of biotechnology to crop and foodproduction is one of the most significant

technological advances in modern agriculture.

The challenge is to strengthen the consensusof what economics has to offer in analysis of complex issuessurrounding the development of GM products. Motivation for thisvolume is to provide a new perspective on the most pressingpolicy questions regarding GM crops and to foster an intellectualclimate conducive to achieving meaningful progress and lastingsolutions. Synopsis

This volume publishes notes from MartinBronfenbrenner's course in the Distribution ofIncome as taken by Warren J. Samuels at theUniversity of Wisconsin in 1954. Bronfenbrenner, who received his PhD from the University ofChicago in 1939, was an unusually prolific authorwith wide-ranging interests. The New Palgraveentry on Bronfenbrenner notes that he was

probably unique in holding simultaneous membership in both theMt Pelerin Society and the Union of Radical Political Economists.Bronfenbrenner's work on income distribution is particularlyimportant as it modified neoclassical theory to be able to addressquestions raised by both classical and neo-Marxian analysts. Hedescribed his own work as being "summed up in the propositionthat the distribution of income and wealth is an important factor injudging an economic system on welfare grounds, but that suchemotive terms as 'maldistribution', 'exploitation', and 'poverty' areall subjective." This volume thus provides an important archivalsource for economists working in mid-twentieth century history ofeconomic thought as well as those interested in the evolution ofneoclassical theory and the nexus between economics and ColdWar politics.

Synopsis

This book is the representation of a narrativeinquiry conducted with five ninth-grade boys whowere identified as displaying multiple literacies, looking specifically at how these boys storiedtheir literate identities. The author conductedseveral negotiation sessions with the boys andtheir parents at the school, as well as in theirhomes. These negotiations facilitated a

methodological concept that the book terms distillation: an interimstep for determining which narratives in an inquiry are emblematic. An analysis of the collected stories revealed that the boys' storiesmoved beyond current conceptions of either identity or literacyalone and instead offered a way of defining literate identity assimultaneously being and doing literacy. The question of how theboys story themselves, the original research question, is ultimatelyanswered using a meta-narrative, or archetype, where a herodistributes a boon or gift to his society. The implications for thisresearch include a need to examine classroom space in order tofacilitate the deployment of literate identity capital, as well asspace for living out the meta-narratives that these boys arecomposing.

Synopsis

More than identity politics, intersectionalityregards the inability of institutional structures toremedy discrimination because of theintersection between social dynamics which areoften discretely conceived (Crenshaw and Dill,2009). This intersection metaphor is worthexamining in the higher education context as weconsider that the majority of students on most US

campuses are women (Allen, et al, 2008), and an increasingnumber of these women are not White; yet, most campuses havesupport services targeted at African-American and/or multiculturalstudent affairs and women's services which are generally targetedat White women. This volume will focus on the subpopulation ofBlack female college students, examining institutional and non-institutional supports for their persistence to the undergraduatedegree.

Synopsis

One of the emerging reasons for the currenttrend of increasing impacts of disasters is theunpredictability of natural hazard events coupledwith the tendency of human settlements to moveto vulnerable locations including coastal areas insearch of economic gains. Urban areas are mostaffected due to concentration of habitat andresources. Whilst it is impossible to make urban

growth resistant, resilience is becoming more widely accepted andurban systems must be resilient enough to cope with the climate-related hazards. This book highlights the issues of resiliencethrough regional, national, city and community-based studies.Contributions come from academia, city government networks, citymanagers, non-government organizations and internationalagencies like the World Bank and United Nations. Thus, the bookreflects a unique aspect of multi-stakeholder perspective. It alsohighlights how to enhance actions at local levels, and how theplans can be implemented through multi-stakeholder collaboration. This is the first book to combine academic research and fieldpractice on the urban risk reduction, focusing especially on theclimate-related disasters in the Asian region.

Synopsis

This collection of especially invited papers aimsto explore the nature of the semantics/pragmaticsinterface by examining the extent to which theanalysis of certain expressions or constructionscan be pragmaticised. As the title of thecollection implies, it is expected that thetheoretical and descriptive burden will move fromsemantics to pragmatics. However, not all parts

of a linguistic system will yield to a pragmatic treatment. Thepossibility remains that certain expressions or constructions aremore economically and elegantly treated in semantic terms. Thus, this collection also contains papers that address the topic of“making pragmatics semantic”.

This collection contributes to the current interest in examining thedivision of labour between semantics and pragmatics in theanalysis of meaning. All the papers are at the forefront ofknowledge in these matters and each contains original empiricalanalyses and/or novel theoretical perspectives. The book isrelevant to courses in university departments of linguistics, modern languages, philosophy and psychology and to a widerange of university teaching and research.

Making Semantics PragmaticCurrent Research in the Semantics/Pragmatics InterfaceVolume 24

Ken TurnerUniversity of Brighton, UK

Synopsis

The book is interdisciplinary in focus and centerson enlarging teachers' understanding of howreading and writing can change lives and howthe language arts can contribute significantly toand change educational processes in the twenty-first century. Implicit in its argument is that, although the emphasis on science and math iscrucial to education in the digital edge, it remains

vitally important to keep reading and writing, language and story,at the heart of the educational process. This is particularly true ina democratic society because shaping stories through humanlanguage can enhance the quality of our lives, and teach ussomething important about what it means to be human andvulnerable. In this sense, stories allow for self-reflection and anincreased opportunity to enhance and understand emotionalintelligence and human community.

Synopsis

A large literature has been generated aboutsustainability, and many organizations, governments, communities, and citizens havefocused on it. Yet, given how quickly the limits ofthe current models of the global economy arebeing approached, we must accelerate the rateat which we learn to operate differently. In thisfirst volume of the Emerald series Organizing for

Sustainable Effectiveness, our goal is to learn from some of thepioneers articulating these challenges and organizing to addressthem.

There is an urgent need to grow the knowledge bases to guide thetransition. For this reason, each chapter in this volume is craftedto bring together the knowledge of practice and theory. Thechapters are based on rich empirical data about particular casesin which organizations are, individually or collectively, working tobuild a more sustainable future. The authors of these chaptersalso bring theoretical knowledge to bear on these case examples. In so doing, they test the applicability of the formal knowledgebase about management and organizations, while refining, modifying, and extending it to increase its usefulness inaddressing the challenges of organizing for sustainableeffectiveness.

Organizing for SustainabilityOrganizing for Sustainable EffectivenessVolume 1

A.B. (Rami) ShaniCalifornia Polytechnic University, USA

Synopsis

Since the mid-twentieth century, organizationaltheorists have increasingly distanced themselvesfrom the study of core societal power centers andimportant policy issues of the day. This has beendriven by a shift away from the study oforganizations, politics, and society and towards amore narrow focus on instrumental exchangeand performance. As a result, our field has

become increasingly impotent as a critical voice and contributor topolicy. For a contemporary example, witness our inability as a fieldto make sense of the recent US mortgage meltdown andconcomitant global financial crisis. It is not that economic andorganizational sociologists have nothing to say. The problem isthat, while we have a great deal of knowledge about finance, theeconomy, entrepreneurship and corporations, we fail to addresshow the knowledge in our field can be used to contribute toimportant policy issues of the day. This book brings together someof the very top scholars in the world in economic andorganizational sociology to address the recent global financialcrisis debates and struggles around how to organize economiesand societies around the world.

Special Issue: Social Movements/LegalPossibilitiesStudies in Law, Politics, and SocietyVolume 54

Austin SaratAmherst College, USA

Synopsis

The common theme of this volume is that thecritical theory of the Frankfurt School is asimportant today, if not more so, as it was at itsinception during the 1930s. It looks at thedistinguishing features of this tradition and how itis critical of, yet also complementary, with otherapproaches in the social sciences, especially insociology. The vanishing point of critical theory is

not the replacement of diverse endeavors to illuminate the natureof modern society, rather, its purpose is to bundle overlyfragmented perspectives that have been developed in theoreticalsociology. Essays included address: the problematic analysis ofpolitical economy at the center of the early Frankfurt School, andthe subsequent neglect of political economy; the continuingimportance of alienation and reification as focal points of criticaltheory; differences in modes of critical theorizing during thetwentieth century (with special emphasis on Lukàcs, Adorno,Habermas, and Postone); globalization as an analytical andnormative challenge critical theorists are uniquely positioned toconfront; and the most problematic feature mainstreamapproaches in the social sciences have in common.

Synopsis

Volume 36 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction issolely devoted to the Blue-Ribbon Papers, underthe special issue editorship of Lonnie Athens.Nine papers are published in which hotly-contested issues are raised that, even if onlyresolved partially, could permanently change thefuture direction of interactional thought. Amongthe questions addressed are: whether there ever

existed a genuine sociological school of thought based on“interactionsim” at the University of Chicago, whether HerbertBlumer misinterpreted the major thrust of George Herbert Mead’sthought, whether conventional or radical interactionism is the mostinsightful perspective from which to examine crucial life decisionsthat are conflict-ridden, whether George Herbert Mead’s andGeorge Santayana’s perspectives converged with or divergedfrom each other's and with radical interactionism, whetherlanguage develops primarily from the inside out or from theoutside in, whether personal economics is mainly responsible forself-esteem and the over all functioning of the self in everyday life, and whether filming constitutes a method of recording data thattraditional ethnographers should include in their tool-box?

Cultural Differences in a GlobalizingWorldMichael MinkovInternational University College, Bulgaria

Synopsis

The policy and technological context within whichFDI takes place has changed dramatically in thelast two decades. Countries around the worldhave become more open to FDI, and revolutionsin information and communications technologyhave lowered the costs of internationalization. Asa result, global FDI flows have swelled but, justas important, the forms that it takes have

become more complex. For instance, emerging markets are nowspawning MNEs of their own, governments and private equityfirms are engaging in FDI, global sourcing is becoming central tothe strategies of many firms, and offshoring encompasses manyservices, including high-end R&D work. In turn, thesedevelopments are exposing the limitations of the field's theoreticalfoundations. This Festschrift in honour of Professor Yair Aharoni,a pioneer in the field of international business, looks at several ofthese new trends in FDI, what they will mean for firms andgovernments, and the opportunities created by thesedevelopments to enrich or extend extant theory. The Discovery of Tourism EconomicsTourism Social ScienceVolume 16

Larry DwyerUniversity of New South Wales, Australia

Synopsis

Urban mobility is currently a major problem allover the world. Space is limited, and individualsaim for a level of quality in mobility that is onlyachieved by largely motorised solutions, whichhave a detrimental effect on the urbanenvironment. Careful analysis of urban mobilitysystems across the world reveals that consistentand effective policies can only be defined and

implemented if the various components of the system and theirinterrelations are considered. This book addresses the problem ofmanaging urban mobility systems in a novel way by consideringthe complexity and diversity of the conurbation and agentsinvolved in a UMS, putting forward the evidence that urbanmobility must be managed at system level.
