Last month’s Annual Conference in Portland, OR, was the most successful Annual Confer- ence in several years, even surpassing the Association’s centennial celebrations in Pittsburgh last year. I am delighted the conference was so well attended, despite the current economic conditions and escalating travel costs. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Technical Program Chair, Dr. Delbert Eatough; Technical Program Vice Chair, Kirk Stopen- hagen; the members of the Technical Council; and the members of the Local Host Commit- tee, headed by Angela Hansen and Dave Dornbush, for a job well done and thank them for all their hard work to make this event so successful. Now we look ahead to the 102nd Annual Conference & Exhibition next year in Detroit, MI. The internationally popular Mega Symposium returns to the Marriot Hotel at the Balti- more Inner Harbor, August 25–28, 2008, showcasing the latest developments in the use of state-of-the-art methods for reducing air pollutant emissions from fossil-fueled power plants. Cosponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, and the Electric Power Research Institute, the biennial Mega Symposium was initiated in 1997 to consolidate conferences addressing technical and policy issues associated with individual air pollutant emissions from power plants. That consolidation brought a “multipollutant” perspective to the conference. This year, the program has been expanded further to include greenhouse gases (GHGs). Both the 2007 U.S. Supreme Court decision designating GHG emissions as “air pollutants” and potential regulation of such gases under the Clean Air Act should be of considerable interest to our members. We anticipate that EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson or a senior EPA official will deliver the opening keynote address covering two important, timely issues: regulation of mercury emissions from power plants and plans to issue an “Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” related to potential endangerment of public health and welfare from GHG emissions. As usual, we also have an excellent, comprehensive technical program with nearly 200 technical papers on power plant emissions of criteria pollutants, mercury, and GHGs. The exhibition is already sold out, and I encourage you to check out the program and plan to attend this year’s symposium (more information can be found online at www.megasymposium.org). I look forward to seeing you in Baltimore. If you find me in the halls or the exhibition area, please stop me and tell me about your perspectives of the Mega conference. Last but not least, I am pleased to announce the election of four new members to the A&WMA Board of Directors for 2009–2011. My congratulations go to President-Elect Gwen Eklund and Board members Scott Golla, Ravi Srivastava, and Howard Saxion (see page 43). I look forward to working with them to improve A&WMA’s products and services. As always, I would welcome a note from you on whatever is on your mind relating to A&WMA products and services. message du président en français

Courriel: [email protected].
