Summer: English for Academic Purposes
We are located in the centre of Edinburgh, the vibrant capital city of Scotland. Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament and is an important centre for business, learning and the arts. It is a city rich in history with a lively cultural and social life and a reputation for warm and friendly people.
We are one of the largest university centres for English language teaching in the United Kingdom offering General, Academic and Specialist English courses for international students and teachers. We have over 30 years’ experience in teaching English as a foreign language.
English for Academic Purposes is a pre-sessional programme for undergraduate and postgraduate international students who plan to study at the University of Edinburgh.
The aim is to improve students’ all round proficiency in English language and develop their study skills to enable them to fully participate in all aspects of a university course taught in English.
• Minimum age is 18 years
• Maximum class size is 15 students
• Attendance certificates are provided to students who attend 80% of classes

English for Academic Purposes Pre-summer Course – late May

Course includes
IELTS 5.5-6.5
Morning
• Intensive training in academic language skills
• Activities to enhance grammar and academic vocabulary
Afternoon
• Either IELTS preparation or General English skills and interest options
Students joining any of our summer EAP courses may continue on to other EAP courses running during the summer. Students are grouped according to English level for the pre-summer and courses 1 and 2. Students are grouped according to subject area for course 3.

Course MaterialMuch of the material used in the EAP programme has been written by ELTC staff. This includes the second editions of two books in the Cambridge University Press study skills series: Study Listening and Study Speaking.
End of course English testingTowards the end of the summer programme, students coming under the Integrated English for Academic Purposes scheme or with conditional places at the University of Edinburgh are assessed on three measures:
• EPTB - a test of listening, reading and grammar
• a written project based on specialist course work
• an oral presentation based on specialist course work
Alternatively, students can make their own arrangements to take IELTS at the local test centre for the relevant fee.
Foundation Academic EnglishThis academic English programme runs all year and is intended for international university students who want to improve their General and Academic English to prepare for a university course in English medium. See our website for full details.
