Dear Friends and Neighbours How quickly time passes, its hard to believe a year has gone by
since we launched our first edition of the Elloe Oracle. My resolution for 2016 is to “make time” for the things and
people I didn't “find time“ for in 2015. Life is about making time for what matters most,
tomorrow isn't guaranteed and its loo late to change what happened yesterday so stop worrying about it and enjoy today -
don’t waste a minute of it!

New releases for Feb/Mar 2016 The Ladybird Book
of the Shed (Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups)This delightful book is the latest in the
series of Ladybird books which have
been specially planned to help
grown-ups with the world about them.
The large clear script, the careful choice
of words, the frequent repetition and the
thoughtful matching of text with
pictures all enable grown-ups to think
they have taught themselves to cope. A
little bit of fun for the young at heart.
The eight books in the series feature
original Ladybird artwork alongside
brilliantly funny, brand new text.

Salt and freshly ground black
pepper

Shake and strain into the glass. Garnish with lemon wedge.
Easter Feast Roast Lamb
Method 1. Preheat oven to 200C/Gas 6
2. With the tip of a sharp knife , make shallow scores
through the outer layer of skin and fat of the lamb
shoulder, but not into the meat, cross-hatching the
entire surface
3. Mix the camomile, thyme, rosemary, sage and
oregano together in a bowl, Season with salt and
pepper.
4. Press a handful of the herb mixture into the skin of
the lamb, massaging it in well all over the flesh of
the lamb
5. Sprinkle some of the herb mix across the base of a
casserole and place the lamb into the casserole dish,
then squeeze lemon juice over the top and any
remaining herb mix.
6. Drizzle honey over the top of the lamb and pour
over a little olive oil.
7. Pour water into the casserole dish and then put lid
on. Transfer to the oven and cook for 2 1/2 hrs.
Check the dish after 1 hr—the lamb should be
taking on a little colour, if the water has evaporated
then add a little more to maintain the dishes
moisture.
8. After 2 1/2 hrs cooking the lamb meat should pull
away easily from the bone..
9. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 4 to 5
mins.
10. To serve, pull large pieces of meat away from the
bone with a knife and fork and drizzle any
meat with the pan juices.

Post Office
operates in the
Village Hall On Tues from 2pm-4pm
Thurs from 11am-1pm.
Despite this being traditionally a quiet time for village social activities, Cowbit Village Hall has continued to be busy with regular and one-off bookings. The 2016 bookings diary is also now starting to fill, organisations and individuals looking to use the hall on specific days/times are recommended to book as early as possible. The basic cost is £8 per hour inclusive, with discounts for charities and village residents. Contact Darren Harper on 01406 380774 or by email at [email protected] The Village Hall Committee is still looking for a secretary. The role isn’t especially arduous in terms of time; the key job is taking minutes at hall committee meetings – around nine a year on average – and then distributing same, usually by electronic means. Anyone interested should contact Darren Harper as above. A provisional date of March 21 has been set for the Village Hall Committee AGM. The 2016 Village Hall Draw programme is now underway; tickets for the rest of the year (11 months from February to December) cost £11. There are two draws a month each with a £30 cash prize, except in December when there is one £30 draw and one bumper £200 one. All profits from the draw go towards hall running costs. Contact Chris Elliott on 01406 381018 or email [email protected] The Village Hall Committee, in conjunction with the church, hosted an old folks tea party on December 16; due to the hall’s current popularity this was held at Chris and Kay Elliott’s home, with Kay Ismail and Val Day helping provide refreshments. An excellent spread was provided and a good time was had by all; it’s now intended to make this a regular event for the senior citizens of our village. For regular news of what’s happening in Cowbit, look at

Lent—a time to reflect! Dear Friends, How quickly time flies, Christmas and New Year are but a fast fading memory and the Church is preparing itself for the biggest festival of the year which is of course Easter. Easter is what we call a movable Feast and this year it is early 27th March.
Of course there is a period of preparation before we get to Easter and that is the season of Lent, when traditionally we give something up. In my own case I give up meat for Lent (much to the consternation of Frisby's butchers). But really Lent is a time to reflect on how we live our lives and what we could do to improve it. The day before we begin the Lenten season traditionally there was a feast day (Shrove Tuesday) when people would have a "blow out" before beginning 40 days of fasting and preparation for Easter; can anyone else remember pancake races in North Street? Whatever you are doing this Easter, and if you do feel the need to learn more about the Christian faith, the churches in Crowland organise a four week Lent course consisting of four evening sessions of approximately two hours where we talk and discuss an aspect of Christianity at which anyone is welcome you can find the details on the Abbey web site www.crowlandabbey.org.uk or below. Finally I was at a meeting in Lincoln last week and my tutor for the day shared with me the screen saver that they have on their computer which is apt for an assistant curate it read;
LOVE PEOPLE, PRAY FOR PEOPLE
HAVE FUN ! Yours in Christ Mike Ongyerth Priest

has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades,

South Holland District Council The New Year has started off with review of South East Lincolnshire
Local Plan. The Local Plan sets out the vision for growth and identifies
key sites for development of housing, community facilities, shops and
employment. SHDC is working with Boston Borough Council covering
areas in both local authorities and how they will be shaped in the
coming years. If you want to find more information or submit comments, please go online to
www.southeastlincslocalplan.org.
Additionally, permanent displays will be available for inspection in SHDC Offices until
Friday 19th February. There will be a number of drop-in sessions in the area including Cowbit
Village Hall on Wed 10th February between 3:30pm and 7:30pm
An event will be held at the South Holland Centre on Wednesday 24th February where local
businesses have the opportunity to “Meet the District Council Buyers” As a procurer of a vast
array of goods and services, the event will allow local business to find out how to approach
the Council and offer the services they specialise in. With a view of keeping business local, it
is hoped the event will be well attended. Closing date for registration is 5:30pm on Monday
15th February. For more information and to book your place, please email
As SHDC finalises the restructuring of it’s management team, Andrew, Anthony and Rodney
were thrilled that Paul Jackson accreted the role of Place Manager. Many of you will not
know Paul, but those of us that do hold him in high regard. Prior to the restructure, Paul was
Planning Manager at SHDC and his new role will now include Building Control, Housing,
Communities and Environmental Services as well as Planning.
We look forward to continuing working with Paul for the foreseeable future.

The start of the new year has been busy in school. We have had a visit from the Dogs Trust with an assembly and class workshops telling children about the wonderful work that they do in looking after and rehoming dogs that have been abandoned or given up.
We are having a visit in school from Ark Farm at the beginning of February. We won a competition at
the “Kids Country” day at the East of England Showground last year,
and are very much looking forward to
welcoming them and the animals into school. Ark Farm
specialise in bringing a variety of friendly farm animals into schools, nurseries, etc., delivering a real hands-on educational and

WESTON PARISH COUNCIL
The January meeting saw two new Parish Councillors co-opted - Janet Bellamy to
the Weston Hills Ward and Chris Dicks to the Weston Village Ward. The Parish
Council is now back up to its full strength of 10 Councillors.
An application to a scheme being run by the British Heart Foundation has secured
another defibrillator for Weston Hills which, with the kind permission of The Bell
Inn, Austendyke Road, will be mounted on an external wall of the pub to ensure that
it is accessible at all times.
After consideration of the budget for the forthcoming year it was decided to reduce
the Parish Council Precept by £500 to £15000.
The next Parish Council meetings will take place on Monday 1st February at
Weston Hills and Monday 7th of March at Weston.
A full list of meeting dates for 2016 can be found on the Parish Council’s website.
There is always a 15 minute Open Forum at the start of the meeting for any member
of the public to have their say regarding matters which affect them.
South East Lincolnshire Local Plan Consultation 8 January 2016 South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee is a partnership of Boston Borough, South Holland District and Lincolnshire County Councils who are working together to create a single Local Plan for the area of South Holland and Boston
Borough. The Local Plan will guide development in South East Lincolnshire over the next twenty years, and will be very important in shaping how the area changes over this period. It will identify opportunities for growth and will set out clear guidance on what planning applications will be permitted, and where. PUBLIC CONSULTATION FROM 8TH JANUARY TO 19TH FEBRUARY 2016 As part of the preparation of the Local Plan, a public consultation is being held from Friday 8th January 2016 to Friday 19th February 2016. We need to know your thoughts on a variety of topics, including: -how many new homes should be built in South East Lincolnshire’s towns and villages -which sites are most suitable to accommodate new homes -where facilities such as schools, GP surgeries, and open space will be needed -- which areas of land should be developed to assist in the creation of the new jobs that will be needed -how to ensure the delivery of a Boston Distributor Road and Spalding Western Relief Road . You can see a paper copy of the Local Plan at : Council Offices, Priory Road, Spalding, Holbeach Library, Church Street, Holbeach, Spalding Library, Victoria Street, Spalding

St. Mary Weston at Christmas The church looked a picture during the Christmas tree festival. Many Thanks to Baytree for donating the trees and all those who sponsored the individual trees and donated prizes for the Raffle and Tombola. a special thanks to Mary Hodgkin, for the mince pies and cakes for refreshments and for being in the church to make serve them. About £700 was made- a good
effort. The attendance was not as high as we would have liked but those who came were very complimentary about the appearance of the church. The Carol Service was extremely well attended and around 150 people were present. The church was lit by candles and Christmas trees and looked magical. The Junior choir sang some carols , and there were some individuals who sang solos. Well done to all of them! A fitting way to celebrate the birth of Christ. The Junior Choir also sang at the arrival of Santa at the opening of the Baytree Winter Wonderland, and were very well received.

Sometime before Christmas one of our Teaching Assistants (Miss Eason) suggested that we hold a
Polar Express Day. With her support and creativity we organised a Christmas Craft and Fun day where all the activities were
based around the film “The Polar Express”. It was a really lovely time just before the holiday where children could explore the magic and sparkle of Christmas. The
children enjoyed watching the film, while eating a biscuit and drinking their hot chocolate – and then Santa came!
On behalf of the school I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year.
The start of a new year presents me with the opportunity to reflect upon all the changes we have been making to improve things for our school community.
The PTA and I are hoping to organise a
Spring Fete which will take place on
23rd April to coincide with St George’s Day and our
forthcoming
St George’s Day Parade.
We would love members of our local community to join us and help us to
organise this event. Could you: Bake cakes for us?
Help to make and serve teas and coffees? Run a stall (tombola, games, raffle, etc.)?
Ask local community groups to donate prizes or run a stall?
Come along and spend money? Offer fundraising suggestions?
The children in Mrs Palmer’s
class were absolutely
wonderful when performing their
play called “The Nativity”! The
singing was beautiful, the costumes were fantastic
and everyone with speaking parts read their
lines really carefully – Mrs Palmer, Mrs Webb and myself were very proud of all of them.
Since September we have introduced: An annual calendar of events sent out termly; Weekly newsletters to keep parents fully informed
about school activities and plans; Facebook and Twitter pages which share the exciting
events taking place at school; Termly theme days which have included dressing up in
costumes, cookery and craft; A reinvigorated curriculum which requires children to
make decisions about what they would like to learn, and how they would like to present their work;
Access to “Teach Your Monster To Read”, a website which helps children develop their reading skills;
Woodland Education – messy (but fun) opportunities for children to engage with the outside world. It has been highly beneficial in helping children to develop teamwork and communication skills, understand how to be safe in the woods, and develop an appreciation of the wonderful fresh air and sticky mud;
Regular cookery lessons to develop basic life-skills; The new School Council and Eco Council; Junior Police Community Support Officers (JPCSOs) who support children at playtimes who need comfort or are having a hard time. I am confident that as these initiatives become embedded we will see a huge impact in children’s learning, behaviour and personal
development.

Elloe Oracle Elloe Oracle is a community newsletter, run by a volunteer committee of local people. It is not a commercial operation ,nor are we a Church Magazine but a community initiative for the people of Cowbit, Weston, Weston Hills and Peak Hill. Competitively-priced advertising is available in sizes ranging from full page right down to ‘classified’, and besides supporting
the local community, advertising in Elloe Oracle is an extremely cost-effective way of
getting your message to local people. As well as conventional advertising we are also able
to offer sponsorship opportunities, our ‘featured ad’ opportunity, and we can also
arrange for your ‘flyers’ to be delivered with the magazine, again at very competitive cost. As well as the printed magazine we have our
own Facebook page and Twitter account, and the whole magazine is available online so it
can be seen by people outside our delivery area .
To find out more about the many commercial opportunities available, call
Darren Harper on 01406
