ST LUKE’S CHURCH“Cast ne'er a clout 'til May be out!” the saying goes. Someone asked “Does it mean May blossom or the month of May?” This year definitely the latter: after a few days of heat and summer clothing I've returned to jumpers in the middle of the month.Rev Fran nearly completed her SPONSORED WALK over the early May Spring holiday: strong winds and blistered feet called a halt just a few miles from home and she plans to finish this short distance over the late May holiday. Total of monies raised for Stickney Church Cluster will be given next month.Bev Gosling and Angela Brady are running a SQUARES COMPETITION for Church Cluster Funds. 90 squares at £1.00 each with 3 prizes. The squares are filling up so get in touch if you are interested. We had a good PRIZE BINGO on 02 May raising £321.80p for Stickney Church and thank you for all the support. Likely time of arrival should be between 11.30am and 12.30pm. This is also St. Luke's GIFT DAY and your Church will be open from 10.00am to 1.00pm to receive envelopes with your donations and to offer free light refreshments. Our BINGO FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK will be held on Saturday 18 June at 7.30pm in Stickney Youth Centre and the proceeds will be presented to the cyclists on their sponsored ride from Nottingham to Skegness. The Longest Day of the YearThe summer/winter solstice occurs when the tilt of a planet, in either northern or southern hemisphere, is most inclined toward the star that it orbits, the Earth orbits the Sun. This happens twice each year (once in each hemisphere), at which times the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the north or the south pole.

The summer solstice occurs during a hemisphere's summer. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs sometime between June 20 and June 22 in the northern hemisphere and between December 20 and December 23 each year in the southern hemisphere. The same dates in the opposite hemisphere are referred to as the winter solstice.

The term midsummer refers to the day on which the summer solstice occurs, this day has the longest period of daylight.

Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

Gardening Tips for JuneJune, marking the start of early summer, is a landmark in the new season, a signal to celebrate the first tastes of success as spring-grown crops reach the edible stage and reward all our earlier efforts. There are signs too of future successes as you notice the flowers on the strawberries and the rows of nearly mature carrots. Also available now will be the juicy radishes, spring onions, baby beets and of course outdoor lettuces and other leaf crops.

Enough, however, of resting on our laurels; let’s see what we can do to ensure success going on through the Summer and into Autumn with our 'jobs for the month'.

1. Don't forget to weed ruthlessly and water regularly to give your plants their best possible chance to thrive.

2. This month you can test to see if early potatoes are ready by pulling back some of the earth which must be replaced to prevent the potatoes from going green. Continue to earth up main crop potatoes and water copiously at this stage.

3. Keep a careful watch for slugs, snails, blackfly, cabbage white caterpillars, carrotfly and other harmful insects. I have found that cabbage white butterflies can penetrate even the 1cm net covering, so use something like 'insect net' sold by Marshalls {other products are available!} fine old net curtains can also be useful as a barrier.

4. Net peas and fruit bushes against hungry birds.

5. Continue to sow beetroot in June - successive sowings will ensure a steady stream of young tender beet well into Autumn.

6. French beans are ready for a second sowing this month. Sow seeds in staggered rows at a depth of about 2" and at intervals of 6"-9" and keep them well watered.

7. Young courgettes are thirsty plants and need regular watering. A good tip is to heap a little soil around the stem to reduce the chance of water logging and mulch to retain moisture.

8. Thin vegetable seedlings sown in spring to give the other plants room to develop.

9. Tomatoes should be supported and tied in, while side shoots should be pinched out as they appear between the main stem and leaf branches.

In conclusion, a word from an appositely named writer, Richard Gardiner, who in 1533 wrote: "Sow carrots in your garden, and humbly praise God for them, as for a singular and great blessing."

Happy Gardening!

IS YOUR PROPERTY HIDING FROM HELP? Emergency services must be able to locate your road and property name or number in order to provide the service requested.

On many occasions we are not able to find a property due to the name or house number being obscured from easy view.

Take this simple test:

Stand on the roadside and see if you can clearly see your house name or numberIf not, valuable time could be wasted if the emergency services have to drive up and down your road trying to locate the correct house name or number.  This is particularly important if you are a single occupant and have not got a relative who can stand outside and flag down the emergency service.

It is good practice to have a house name or number located at the boundary of your property ie on your fence or drive way entrance and then another located on or near your front door.  Try to have the letters or numbers as large as your fixing location will allow.

Think! - if you can’t see your house number or name then the emergency services won’t see it either.

This year the Stickney Show has grown with many more things to be seen and to do. Fitness is a moving experienceWe are a new fitness and exercise business that has started in Stickney, based at Stickney Grange. I have a diploma in personal training with certificates in circuit training, nutritional advice and will have certificates in fitness testing, functional resistance training and TRX training soon.

We offer a number of fitness services from personal training and training programme design through to fitness testing and nutritional advice. My main focus at present is running circuit training/boot camp sessions, every weekend to start with, but will be looking at expanding to sessions during the week and in the evenings. Our circuit training sessions are designed to exercise the whole body, but there will also be sessions designed with specific targets in mind, for example cardiovascular.

You do not have to go to a gym to be active or to carry out fitness, so our circuit training sessions are run outside, at the far end of the car boot sale field. All we ask is that you do YOUR best.

Find us on Facebook at Allum Active, where you can view photos of some of our previous sessions. All of our circuit training sessions will be advertised on Facebook so feel free to look and book a slot on one of these sessions.

Alternatively you can call us, if you would like more information, on 07977 460781

MEETINGS HELD ON THURSDAY 12 MAY 2016

Annual Parish MeetingApologies were received from Cllr Perham and Dist Cllr AshtonPresent: Cllrs Edwards, Spring, Littlewood, Dodds, Wood and Bolland Also present: Dist Cllr Jones and 1 member of the public.

The Chairman read out her Annual Report to Parishioners:

“We ended last year with a Council that was bereft of Councillors so I was very grateful to Councillor Wood and Councillor Lewis for volunteering to come back on until such time as we had enough Councillors to keep going, as otherwise the Council would have closed down and all our affairs would have been dealt with by another council, eg Stickford. Unfortunately Tony was only able to attend one meeting before he had to resign due to ill health. We were all shocked and saddened to hear of his death a short while later.

At the first meeting of this year we welcomed 3 new Councillors, Councillors Edwards, Littlewood and Spring. In September we welcomed Councillor Dodds and the return of Councillor Lamy Edwards who has since resigned, I would like to thank her for her work over the time she was back on the Council. More recently we have welcomed back Councillor Perham who served on the Council for a long time before needing to resign due to work commitments. We are now up to now up to 7 Councillors with room for one more.

There haven’t been any earth shattering events this last year. There have been the usual problems of planning applications, some granted and some not and of course we have the never ending problem of pot holes and poor road conditions. These are unlikely to be solved in the near future due to the District and County Councils lack of funds.

We lost our grass cutter for the Cemetery who had always done a good job. Our replacement grass cutter was then unable to do it due to ill health. We now have a firm who seem to be doing a good job.

Last year we were a member of the Parish Paths Partnership, this meant we told our grass cutter to cut the paths and were reimbursed the cost, due to monetary concerns this has now been scrapped and we are reliant on the County Council to cut them.

As you may have heard the County and District Councils are looking at passing services down to Parish Councils. They have already taken the step of not paying for any Parish elections, so if an election is called the Parish will have to foot the bill. The Parish Council has put money aside for such an event. There is an ongoing problem with the Picnic Area, namely what is going to become of it. Despite many emails to all concerned to try to ascertain what is going on, no-one has replied to inform us of any plans or a request for a meeting. We will keep trying to find out exactly what the County council are intending to do with it.

We were able to stop the building of 100 houses off the Main Road, although 50 are on schedule to be built at some stage in the future. We owe thanks to Mrs Arnold who managed to put our objections in such a way that the Planning Committee were swayed in our favour. There has been permission given for a few smaller developments which should almost take us to the limit required by ELDC over the next ten years. We would like to than Mr Tempest for his sterling work as a litter picker. As I travel round the village there is little evidence of litter either on the Main Road or on Hall Lane. The cemetery is also

Page 21: Mixed Fruit Ice Lollies - Lincolnshire County Councilparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../128/Parish_Magazine1234…  · Web viewWord Search. Football ... Sheets will cost £2.00 each

free from litter. Thank you to Mr Dear for his work in the play park and the Garden of Remembrance, they always look really well cared for.

Thank you also to George Bolland who clears the litter from the play park every week and checks the equipment to see that it is safe.

We must thank the people who deliver the magazine every month, Peter Hood, Coral Elderfield, Linda Wooding, Julie Dawson, Nick Gosling, Kim Pennells-Clark and George Bolland, who between them, deliver 500 magazines.

Thanks also to the Jubilee Committee who have been working hard on the Summer Show.

Finally I would personally like to thank all the Councillors for all their hard work for the Parish and Mrs Arnold who works so hard on behalf of the Council and the Jubilee Committee.”

The member of the public reported:The April minutes are not on the website, but the March minutes have been duplicated. He has contacted the Countryside Agency to question the purpose of the large industrial waste wheelie bin sited at the picnic site.Annual Parish Council Meeting

Cllr Bolland will continue as Chairman with Cllr Edwards as the Vice Chairman.
