E l govern de la Generali-tat ha anunciat que laUPF podrà impartir la

seva llicenciatura en Medi-cina a partir de la tardor del2008. Deu anys després desol·licitar-ho, la Universitati el Departament de CEXSestan preparats per lideraraquest magnífic repte. Lamajoria dels actuals profes-sors ja es van incorporar te-nint en compte aquesta pers-pectiva. Tot arriba finalmenten el moment adequat, atèsque el nou context de l’espaieuropeu d’ensenyament su-perior permetrà oferir un in-novador grau en ciències bio-mèdiques. Mentre l’ensenya-ment de la medicina tindrà lamirada posada al segle XXI, laformació bàsica serà conjun-ta pels estudiants amb inte-ressos per la clínica o perla biologia humana. Tot elPRBB està d’enhorabona, jaque es podran completar elsingredients d’un projecte cien-tífico-docent que cada cop témés sentit.

the UPF will be able to teachMedicine starting from au-tumn 2008. Ten years afterrequesting it, the Universityand the CEXS are ready tolead this magnificent chal-lenge. The majority of the cur-rent UPF professors werecounting on this perspectivewhen they joined the univer-sity. Everything arrives finallyat the right moment, sincethe new European Higher Edu-cation Space will allow themto offer an innovative biome-dical sciences degree. Whilethe medical education willhave its eyes on the XXI cen-tury, the basic studies willbe common for students witheither clinical or human bio-logy interests. At PRBB weall have reasons to celebra-te, since now the ingredientsof our scientific-academicproject, which makes moreand more sense each day,will be complete.

Millores en els tractamentsde l’addicció a drogues i de l’hepatitis C

Mar, forma part de l’estudi euro-peu IATPAD, un projecte de 3anys en el que participen vuit paï-sos amb l’objectiu de millorarl’adhesió al tractament en pa-cients addictes a l’alcohol i lesdrogues. En la reunió del passatjuliol a l’IMIM es van presentarels resultats de l’anàlisi de lesxarxes sanitàries dels països par-

ticipants. Entre els factors limi-tadors de l’accessibilitat en desta-quen la por dels malalts al trac-tament i a ser jutjats i la no ade-quació dels centres de tracta-ment a les noves necessitats as-sistencials. També s’ha vist quecalen serveis específics per aadolescents i dissenyar elementsde cribatge eficients.

Dos grups de la comunitatcientífica del PRBB han es-tat recentment implicats

en millorar el tractament d’algu-nes malalties. El Dr. Ricard Solà,cap de la Secció d’Hepatologia del’Hospital del Mar, coordina el Pro-grama Multidisciplinari de Suportdurant el tractament de l’hepati-tis C. Aquest programa es basaen el recolzament del pacient perpart d’un equip format per metges,infermeres, psicòlegs, psiquiatresi farmacèutics, i ha aconseguitun augment en el compliment deltractament de l’hepatitis C.

Stress, smoking

and genetics

Stress is one of the main rea-sons for relapsing duringsmoking abstinence. This is

one of the conclusions of thework done by a group of rese-archers coordinated by Dr. RafaelMaldonado, director of the Neu-ropharmacology Unit of CEXS-UPF,and published recently in the jour-nal Biological Psychiatry.

The study done in geneticallymodified animals has provenwhat some clinical studies al-ready had hinted: that there ex-ists a genetic predisposition tofeel more or less stress, and thatstress is able to modify behaviourin an important way, to the pointof inducing the reestablishmentof an addiction to nicotine.

One of the objectives of theproject is to study which is theneurobiological substrate thatexplains the different individualvulnerability to suffer a nicotineaddictive process. The studiesshow how nicotine affects theendogenous opiate system,whose function is to mitigatethe pain and to increase thepositive emotions �

Improvements in the treatment to drug addictionand to Hepatitis C

Two groups from the scientificcommunity at PRBB have re-cently been involved in im-

proving the treatment of some di-seases. Dr. Ricard Solà, head of thehepathology section of the Hospitaldel Mar, is the coordinator of theMultidisciplinary Support Programduring the treatment for Hepatitis C.This program is based on the sup-port given to the patient by a groupformed by doctors, nurses, psy-chologists, psychiatrists and che-mists, and it has managed to in-crease the observance of the treat-ment in patients with Hepatitis C.

E l grup de la Dra. Isabelle Vernos, in-tegrat en el programa de BiologiaCel·lular i Desenvolupament del

CRG des del 2005, estudia el rol dels mi-crotúbuls al citoesquelet cel·lular. Elsmicrotúbuls ténen funcions molt impor-tants: donen forma a la cèl·lula, facilitenel transport de molècules dins la cèl·lu-la, i s’encarreguen del repartiment delscromosomes entre les cèl·lules filles du-rant la divisió cel·lular.

Quan una cèl·lula es divideix els mi-crotúbuls formen un fus, al centre delqual es col·loquen els cromosomes.Aquest fus mitòtic servirà de guia per talque la meitat dels cromosomes vagin acada nova cèl·lula. El grup de la Dra.Vernos, format per 10 persones de 6 na-cionalitats diferents, intenta entendrecom els microtúbuls, amb l’ajut de pro-teïnes associades (motors moleculars,kinases, fosfatases, GTPases), s’auto-or-ganitzen per formar aquesta complexaestructura.

Amb aquesta finalitat fan servir unsistema experimental molt curiós mit-jançant ous de granota. Es recullen ousno fecundats de Xenopus laevis, la gra-nota model per excelència, i se’n fa unextracte que permet de refer in vitro el ci-cle cel·lular. En efecte, en afegir-hi el nu-cli de l’esperma, aquest extracte es com-porta com ho faria l’ou fecundat: co-mença a «dividir-se» i forma un fus mitò-tic observable amb el microscopi. Així,es poden afegir i treure proteïnes de l’ex-tracte i veure l’efecte que en resulta.

Microtubule function and cell

division (CRG)

D r. Isabelle Vernos’ group is part ofthe CRG Cell and DevelopmentalBiology Programme since 2005.

They study the role of microtubules in thecytoskeleton. Microtubules have very im-portant functions: they shape the cell,they facilitate the transport of moleculeswithin cells, and they are in charge of thesharing of the chromosomes between thetwo daughter cells during cell division.

When a cell divides, microtubules re-organize to form a spindle, at the centreof which the chromosomes are posi-

tioned. This mitotic spindle will serve asa guide for half of the chromosomes togo to each of the two new cells. Dr.Vernos’ group, formed by 10 people from6 different nationalities, tries to under-stand how microtubules, with the helpof some associated proteins (molecularmotors, kinases, phosphatases andGTPases), self-organise to form this com-plex structure. For this, they use a verycurious experimental system based onfrog eggs. Non-fertilized eggs from Xe-nopus laevis, a frog that is generally usedas a model organism, are collected andan extract is made from them. This ex-tract is then able to re-create the cell cy-cle in vitro. Indeed, when adding a spermnucleus to the extract, the extract be-haves like a fertilized egg would do: itstarts ‘dividing’ and it forms a mitoticspindle which can be observed under themicroscope. Therefore, one can add orremove proteins from the extract andsee what the resulting effect is.

Dr. Vernos is a member of the Euro-pean Molecular Biology Organization (EM-BO) since 2005 and winner of the 2006Barcelona award to the university-com-pany cooperation for her collaborationwith the company ‘Biolink 2000’. Withthe help of the experimental model ofthe frog she has made the major discov-eries of her career. She highlights theidentification of several kinesins (a typeof molecular motor) in Xenopus, and thecharacterization of their role in the dy-namics and organization of microtubules.

Her group also collaborates with re-searchers from around the world, withwhom Dr. Vernos contacted during her pre-vious years at Cambridge University andat the European Molecular Biology Labo-ratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany �

Vaig estudiar Biologia i després vaig fer la tesi enVirologia, sobre els mecanismes pels quals els virus es-tableixen infeccions persistents. És fascinant que unesentitats tan simples produeixin uns efectes tan devas-tadors que encara escapen al nostre control. Crec quesón un dels reptes del segle XXI.Quines diferències has vist entre treballar als EEUU i

treballar aquí?

Quan vaig marxar als EEUU hi havia a Espanya pocsdiners i un ambient molt pessimista, i la diferència mésgran que vaig notar va ser que als EEUU es valora la fei-na ben feta i estàs limitat només per tu mateix. Tambéhi ha més capacitat de mitjans, però ara aquí és real-ment fantàstic, estem al mateix nivell que qualsevolcentre estranger.Quin ha estat el millor moment de la teva carrera?

Ho és sempre que et planteges una pregunta i veus enun experiment una banda en un gel que et fa avançaruna mica més.Què haguessis fet si no fessis recerca?

Qualsevol cosa relacionada amb pensar, amb la creati-vitat. M’agrada molt l’art, la fotografia, la música, lespel·lícules, la filosofia, etc.Creus que el món de la recerca és igualitari?

Malauradament no és una qüestió d’opinió. La situacióreal ha estat presentada en estudis científics publicatsa Nature i Science que demostren que, a igual capaci-tat, les dones reben menys recursos.Com es pot combinar la recerca amb la docència?

És dur a vegades, però és una feina molt important i,de fet, una de les raons per les que vaig tornar delsEEUU per incorporar-me a la UPF fou el seu recolzamenttant a la recerca com a la innovació docent. És un temaque m’interessa molt i amb el que col·laboro amb el de-gà de la facultat.Què es podria millorar en el cas concret de la UPF i del

PRBB?

M’ho poses difícil, perquè és un lloc fantàstic! Seria moltbo comptar amb un P3, la instal·lació necessària per tre-ballar amb virus de bioseguretat 3. A més, una cosaque sí hauria de millorar és la interacció entre diferentsinstitucions amb serveis comuns, com confocals, pro-teòmica, etc. També que hi hagi llocs on penjar anuncisde places, seminaris, etc. de forma espontània.

Juana Díez va néixer a Torrevieja ara fa 44 anys.Estudià a les Universitats de Múrcia i Sevilla i vafer el doctorat al Centre de Biologia Molecular(CSIC) a Madrid. Treballà un any en l’empresaApplied Genetic and Immunology S.A., a Madrid,i al 1995 va marxar als EUA a l’Institut de Viro-logia Molecular de la Universitat de Wisconsin,des d’on va venir al CEXS-UPF ara fa 7 anys.

La Dra. Díez és responsable de la unitat devirologia i està interessada en la identificacióde noves dianes per a tractaments antiviralsmés eficaços enfront a virus RNA tals com el del’Hepatitis C. És també la coordinadora dels es-tudis de Microbiologia de la UPF.

Juana Díez was born in Torrevieja 44 years ago.She studied at the Universities of Murcia andSevilla and did her PhD at the Centre for Molec-ular Biology (CSIC) in Madrid. She worked in thecompany Applied Genetic and Immunology S.A.in Madrid, and in 1995 she went to the US, tothe Institute of Molecular Virology at the Uni-versity of Wisconsin, from where she came toCEXS-UPF 7 years ago.

Dr. Díez is responsible for the virology unitand she is interested in the identification of newtargets for better antiviral treatments againstRNA viruses such as that of Hepatitis C. She isalso the coordinator of the microbiology studiesat the UPF.

UK) is studying synaptic plasticity inthe hippocampus, and more specifi-cally the mechanisms and functionof LTP (long-term potentiation), onwhich he first published a detailedaccount in 1973. Specifically, how RNA bind-ing proteins regulate splicing of indi-vidual pre-mRNAs and the signalingevents that coordinate splicing net-works during development. His groupalso studies myotonic dystrophy, themost common form of adult onsetmuscular dystrophy, in which dis-rupted splicing regulation causes theprimary features of the disease.

Friday September 21: Dr.Halazonetis (Departmentof Molecular Biology &Department of Biochemis-

try, University of Geneva, Switzerland)is trying to understand cancer at themolecular level and then use thisknowledge to develop novel cancertherapies. Specific projects pursued inthe laboratory address the molecularmechanisms by which cells respond toDNA damage and problems with DNAreplication. They also study thesecheckpoint pathways in actual humanprecancerous and cancerous lesions.

MARC TIMMERS, Thurs-day September 27: Dr.Timmers (Department ofPhysiological Chemistry,Universitair Medisch Cen-

trum, Utrecht, Netherlands) investi-gates the regulation of core promot-er activity by the B-TFIID and Ccr4-Not transcription complexes, and heapplies genomic (SGA and genome-wide localization) and proteomic (af-finity-purification coupled to MS) toolsto their study. He’s also interested inubiquitin modification pathways andthe menin protein, which is involvedin chromatin modification.

tern University, Evanston, Illinois, USA)focuses on the concrete mechanis-tics of gene regulation. When did you become interested in science and why?

When I was 7 I got as a present a book called«Why are things as they are?». Since then Ihave always thought that there is a reason for

everything, and I have wanted to find it.

What did you study at the University?

I studied Biology and then I did my PhD in Virology onthe mechanisms by which viruses establish persistentinfections. It is fascinating that such simple entities canhave such devastating effects which still escape ourcontrol. I think they are one of the challenges of the21st century.

Which differences have you seen between working in

the US and working here?

When I left to the US, in Spain there was a very pes-simistic environment, so the biggest difference I noticedwas that in the US the good work is valued and youare limited only by yourself. They have also bigger budg-ets, but now here it is really fantastic, we are at thesame level than any other foreign centre.

Which has been the best moment of your career?

It is every time that in an experiment you see that bandon a gel which brings you a bit closer to the answer ofthe question you had asked yourself.

What would you have done if you were not a resear-

cher?

Anything related to thinking, creativity. I love art, pho-tography, music, films, philosophy, etc.

Do you think that the research world is an egalita-

rian one?

Unfortunately this is not an opinion issue. The real sit-uation, proved with scientific studies published recent-ly in Nature and Science is, that with the same abilities,women receive less resources.

How can one combine research and teaching?

It is hard, sometimes, but it is a very important job, andactually one of the reasons why I came back from theUS to join the UPF was its support both to research andto teaching innovation. It is a subject that interestsme a lot, and where I collaborate with the School dean.

What could be improved at the UPF and the PRBB?

That’s a difficult question, because it’s a fantasticplace! It would be good to have a P3 (the necessaryinstallation to work with viruses of biosecurity level 3).One thing to improve is the interaction between thedifferent institutions that have common services, suchas confocals, proteomics, etc. Also, to have some placeto put up announcements for seminars, job offers, etc.in a spontaneous way �

Estrena europea del nou ASIMOElvira López

L a «Nit de la Recerca», les Jornades deRobòtica i la presentació en primíciaeuropea del nou robot ASIMO conflui-

ran a la plaça del PRBB entre el 27 i el 30de setembre. L’Ajuntament i la UPC orga-nitzen al PRBB les II Jornades de Robòticade Barcelona, en el marc de les quals, lacasa Honda presentarà per primera vega-da a Europa la nova versió del robot huma-noide ASIMO, un robot que pot caminar, có-rrer, parlar i interactuar amb les personesi que és l’estrella indiscutible de la robòti-ca mundial. ASIMO realitzarà unes 15 exhi-bicions, que aniran acompanyades de con-ferències i activitats relacionades amb elmón de la robòtica, com combats de «su-mo» de robots, així com d’uns tallers de ro-bòtica adreçats a nens de 6 a 12 anys,que realitzarà la casa Lego i on els nenspodran aprendre i jugar amb petits robots.

El dia 28 de setembre a partir de les6 de la tarda, el PRBB serà la seu de «laNit de la Recerca» que es celebra en 31països europeus i compta amb la parti-cipació de més de 150 ciutats. A Es-panya aquests actes tindran lloc simul-

European première of the new ASIMO

T he “Research Night”, the Roboticsexhibition and the European pre-mière of the new ASIMO robot will

take place at the PRBB square from the27th to the 30th of September. The citycouncil and the UPC will organize at thePRBB the II Robotics Show of Barcelona,and in this framework, Honda will pres-ent for the first time in Europe its newhumanoid robot ASIMO. This robot isable to walk, run, talk and interact with

people, and is without doubt the world-wide star of robotics. ASIMO will doabout 15 exhibitions which will be ac-companied by activities related to theworld of robotics, such as ‘sumo’ com-bats by robots, as well as robotic work-shops for children from 6 to 12, pre-pared by Lego, in which they will be ableto learn and play with little robots.

On September 28 from 6pm, the PRBBwill be the venue for the “Research Night”,which is celebrated in more than 150 citiesin 31 different European countries. InSpain, the events will take place simultane-ously at the PRBB, at the Girona Universityand at the Ibaeta Campus in Donosti. At thePRBB, several technological installationsfrom the UPF will be exhibited: one of themwill be the “reactable”, the new and revolu-tionary musical instrument created by themusical technology research group from theUPF, which will animate the evening with aconcert. Do scientists close for holidays?

Scientists are passionate people who have a very busy life. They travel relativelyoften to international conferences, spending long hours on the plane every year,or they do stays in foreign labs for weeks or months. Some of them work in the

lab until very late, taking care of their cell cultures. Others even go to the lab on week-ends to do some extra experiments. Do they never «close for holidays»? And if they do,do they feel like traveling, as many other people do, or do they just want a bit of rest?

Ellipse has asked six scientists who work at PRBB what they usually do on theirholidays, and what they did this summer.

Els científics són persones apassionants i apassionades que duen una vida moltatrafegada. Viatgen sovint a conferències internacionals, passant moltes horesde l’any en avions. També fan estades a l’estranger durant setmanes o mesos.

Alguns treballen al laboratori fins a ben entrada la matinada, tenint cura dels cultiuscel·lulars. D’altres fins i tot s’escapen els caps de setmana a fer algun experi-ment. És que mai tanquen per vacances, i si ho fan, tenen ganes de viatjar, com mol-ta altre gent, o volen senzillament una mica de repòs?

Al’igual que els éssers vius formatsper milions d’aquestes micromè-triques unitats, les cèl·lules nei-

xen, creixen, es reprodueixen i moren. El«cicle cel·lular» es divideix en la interfa-se, el temps que passa entre divisions, ila fase mitòtica, en la que la cèl·lula esdivideix físicament. La interfase està for-mada per la fase G1, quan la cèl·lulacreix; la fase S, quan la cèl·lula duplicael seu ADN; i la fase G2, en la que lacèl·lula és ja madura. La fase mitòticaes divideix en la mitosi, durant la qualels cromosomes es reparteixen entre lesdues cèl·lules filles, i la citocinesi, en laque té lloc la divisió física de la cèl·lulamare. El cicle cel·lular és ordenat i estàestrictament regulat. Aquesta regulacióés essencial, ja que el descontrol del ci-cle cel·lular és la causa principal del càn-cer: quan hi ha errors en el cicle, lescèl·lules canceroses no paren de divi-dir-se i el tumor creix.

Als centres del PRBB hi ha moltsgrups que estudien temes relacionatsamb el cicle cel·lular. Alguns d’ells són elgrup del Dr. Gil (IMIM), que estudia la

connexió bioquímica entre la mort cel·lu-lar programada i la regulació del ciclecel·lular en el ratolí, i els grups de la Dra.Hidalgo i el Dr. Ayté del CEXS-UPF, que in-tenten entendre el control del cicle cel·lu-lar en el llevat, un organisme model moltútil en aquest camp. El Dr. Posas (UPF)també fa servir el llevat per estudiar elcontrol de la progressió cel·lular per partde la proteïna Hog1 MAPK, mentre quela Dra. Muñoz (CRG) està interessada enel paper de les MAPKs en el control de laproliferació i diferenciació del teixit mus-cular. Un altre exemple és el grup de laDr. Vernos (CRG), que estudia en grano-tes el repartiment dels cromosomes du-rant la mitosi.

The life of a cell

All living organisms are formed frommillions of micrometric units, cells,which are constantly growing, re-

producing and dying throughout the life-time of an organism. The cell cycle isdivided into the interphase —the timebetween divisions— and the mitotic

phase, in which the cell divides physi-cally. The interphase is formed by thegrowth stage (G1), the duplication stage(S), during which the cell duplicates itsDNA, and the maturity stage (G2). AfterG2, the mitotic phase, which can be di-vided into 2 stages, begins. The firststage is mitosis, in which the chromo-somes are shared between the twodaughter cells. The second stage is cy-tokinesis, during which the mother cell

divides physically. The cell cycle is or-dered and strictly regulated. This regula-tion is essential, since the chaos of thecell cycle is the main cause of cancer:when there are errors in the cycle, thecells don’t stop dividing and the tumourgrows.

At the PRBB centres there are manygroups performing research into differ-ent aspects of the cell cycle. Amongthem are Dr. Gil’s group (IMIM), who fo-cuses on the biochemical connection be-tween programmed cell death and the cellcycle regulation in mice, and the groupsof Dr. Hidalgo and Dr. Ayté from CEXS-UPF, who are trying to understand thecontrol of the cell cycle in yeast, a mo-del organism widely used in this field.Dr. Posas (UPF) also uses yeast tostudy the control of cell progression bythe protein Hog1 MAPK, whilst Dr.Muñoz (CRG) is interested in the role ofMAPKs in the control of proliferationand differentiation of the muscle. Manolis Kogevinas (CREAL) recomana:Albergínies farcides de verdures

El nom d’aquest plat típic de la cui-na grega estival (Albergínies Imambayildí o «la delícia de l’Imam») in-

dica que és d’origen turc. La crònica diuque un Imam (sultà), atret per la delíciadel plat, es va desmaiar menjant unagran quantitat d’albergínies farcides. Ésveritat que si fregiu els ingredients ambmolt d’oli, aquest plat pot ser una micaindigest.

Ingredients: 6-8 Albergínies, 3 tassesde cebes tallades a trossets petits, 1llauna de tomàquet (de 500gr) o tomà-quets frescs madurs, 1 tassa de julivertfresc, 2-3 tasses d’oli, 4 dents d’all, sali pebre.

Intenteu aconseguir albergínies peti-tes, llargues i fines. Talleu la punta de

l’albergínia i feu un tall al llarg sense ta-llar fins el fons. Saleu el tall i poseu lesalbergínies en un recipient amb aiguasalada 15 min per a que perdin una mi-ca l’amargor. Assequeu-les i fregiu-lesamb una mica d’oli. Retireu-les de lapaella quan s’hagin daurat lleugera-ment, i col·loqueu-les en una safata alforn. Sofregiu les cebes fins que esti-guin transparents, afegiu l’all, els tomà-quets en trossets, el julivert i una micade sal i pebre. Deixeu coure uns 20 minfins que perdin l’aigua. Farciu les alber-gínies. Si voleu poseu-hi una mica de for-matge ratllat, pa ratllat i oli. Poseu-les alforn a 2000C uns 30 min. Podeu acom-panyar-les amb arròs blanc i amb for-matge feta.

Manolis Kogevinas (CREAL) recommends: Aubergines filledwith vegetables

The name of this typical summerdish of the Greek cuisine (Imambayildí aubergines or «the Imam de-

light») shows that it is of Turk origin. Thestory says that an Imam (sultan), at-tracted by the delightful dish, faintedfrom eating too many filled aubergines.Indeed, if you fry them with a lot of oilthis can be quite an indigestible dish!

Ingredients: 6-8 Aubergines, 3 cups ofonions cut to small pieces, 1 tomato tin(500gr) or fresh tomatoes, 1 cup of freshparsley, 2-3 cups of oil, 4 garlic cloves,salt, pepper.

Try to get small aubergines, long andthin. Cut the tip of the aubergine andmake a cut along its length, being care-ful not to cut it through. Add salt to thecut, and put the aubergines in a contain-er with salty water for 15 min until theylose a bit their bitterness. Dry them, andfry them in a bit of oil until they areslightly brown. Put them on a containerin the oven. Fry the onions until they aretransparent, add the garlic, the tomatoesin pieces, the parsley and a bit of saltand pepper. Let it cook for 20 min untilthey lose the water. Fill in the auber-gines; you can add some grated cheese,grated bread and oil. Put in the oven at2000C for 30 min. It can be accompa-nied with rice and feta cheese �

CAMPIONAT VÒLEI PLATJA / BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

El 26 de juliol va acabar el campionat de vòlei platja del PRBB, després de nouintenses setmanes amb partits cada tarda. Els 24 equips inicials (unes 250persones) es van dividir en 3 lligues —els Cracks, els Casi-cracks i els Casi-

que-no— segons els seus resultats de la primera fase. La final dels cracks, el mateix dia 26, fou un partit superemocionant de 5 sets on

els «Just doping» varen guanyar als «Rabenessen de Caramel» (els organitzadors delcampionat) ben bé pels pèls. Tots dos equips, però, van celebrar l’haver arribat a lafinal, i varen gaudir de la festa que va tenir lloc a continuació, on es varen repartirels premis als guanyadors de cada lliga. Els «Evoleibol» van ser els campions delscasi-cracks, i «Los chanclas» varen quedar en segon lloc.

També van rebre premis l’equip més original (Pintxos murinos), el més compe-titiu (Just doping) i el de més “bon rotllo” (Punk Cakes). A més, tots els parti-cipants en el campionat varen rebre unes «xancles PRBB» per gaudir de la restade l’estiu.

La festa va estar amenitzada per dos grups en els que tocaven membres dels cen-tres del PRBB. El primer grup, Arial Black, un grup d’indie-pop-rock format fa 4 anys,tenia al Dr. Daniel Turró, del CMRB, com a guitarrista, i a en Victor Vicens, psiquiatrede l’Hospital del Mar, als teclats. En el segon grup, el grup de punk-hard-rock PuriLópez, l’Eulàlia Salichs (CRG) tocava el baix i en Ferran Aragón (UPF) portava la veucantant. La festa, animada pels dos grups i els seus fans incondicionals, va conti-nuar al màxim d’intensitat fins la mitjanit.

The Grand Finale

On July 26, the PRBB beach volleyball championship finished after nine inten-sive weeks, with games every evening. The 24 initial teams (about 250 peo-ple) were divided into 3 leagues —Cracks, Casi-cracks and Casi-que-no— ac-

cording to their results during the first round.The final of the Cracks was a very exciting game of 5 sets, in which «Just doping»

won «Rabenessen de Caramel» (the organizers of the championship) for very little dif-ference. Both teams, though, celebrated to have arrived to the final, and enjoyed thefollowing party, during which the prizes were awarded to the winners of each league.«Evoleibol» were the casi-cracks champions, and «Los chanclas» were second.

The most original team (Pintxos murinos), the most competitive (Just doping) and themost laid-back (Punk Cakes) also received an award. Furthermore, all the championshipparticipants received a pair of «PRBB sandals» to enjoy the rest of the summer even more.

The party was animated by two groups in which members of the centers of thePRBB played. The first group, Arial Black, an indie-pop-rock group formed 4 years ago,had Dr. Daniel Turró, from the CMRB, as a guitarist, and Victor Vicens, a psychia-trist from the Hospital del Mar on the keyboard.
