The vehicle that the team built and raced looks like something NASA might have developed. With a computer programmed electromagnetic clutch and a thermo electric generator that uses heat from the engine exhaust muffler to generate electricity, this machine is something that most mechanical engineers could only dream of in a full career of auto design. And this, from school students.

We farewelled our Gojo Senior High School exchange students this week, as they headed home to Japan after another successful and rewarding visit to the school and with host families. This year marks the 23rd year of the Japanese student exchange program, making it one of the longest standing exchange programs in the region.

These trips not only improve the learning of a second language but foster a more open-minded attitude towards people of a very different background, feeding the culture of “acceptance” that even a world leader in Emotional Intelligence, believes is so ingrained in this school community.

FROM THE HEADMASTER

www.girton.vic.edu.au

Professor Marc Brackett tweeted last week that he was “incredibly proud of Girton Grammar who has shined…”. Without putting too much weight on social media comments, this, coming from one of

the world’s leading experts on the teaching of Emotional Intelligence, was immensely complimentary.

Professor Brackett spent a week at the school conducting various RULER training sessions but this time he was not here just to teach the teachers. This time, he wanted feedback on his world renowned program from students who have been using his methods for more than five years. Students provided frank and fearless feedback on what they think works in a school setting and what could be improved when it comes to teaching young people how to understand and express their emotions.

Students were also surveyed using a social media app developed by Yale University and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way Foundation” to explore how young people feel at school. “Accepted” was the top response from our students. This is in stark contrast to “tired”, the top rated response from 49,000 American high school students using the same survey method.

Acceptance from friends, from family even from strangers, is absolutely fundamental to humans.

Belonging to a group was essential for survival to our ancestors, helping humans survive harsh environments. Being part of a group still helps people feel safe and protected. On the flip side, rejection leading to isolation and loneliness leads to poor physical and emotional health.

For this school to nurture a culture where feeling accepted is the dominant emotion among students is a credit to every staff member and every student who attends this school. From a foundation of acceptance, every child has the opportunity to be exactly who they want to be and I can think of no healthier environment for a young person to flourish.

Three of our Senior students who have flourished well beyond the bounds of the classroom returned last week from competing in the Shell Eco-marathon in Manila - an international competition of Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV). The Girton Racing Team consisting of Ben Pignataro (11 Frew), Lucas Kirby (12 Jenkin) and Alexander Holmes (12 Jenkin), is the first ever Australian school team to make it through the gruelling selection process to compete in this prestigious event.

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Last week I was very fortunate to have been able to travel to Canberra to visit the Year Six students and teachers who were taking part in the annual

Year Six Camp.

Travelling to the Australian Capital Territory and learning about our Federal government, our history and what it means to be an Australian citizen was both exciting and educational for the students. What impressed me the most was the enthusiasm, behaviour and friendship displayed by the students. We know that Girton students are well respected in our own community but, having seen the exemplary behaviour of our Year Six students in Canberra, I can see why they are well respected wherever they go. From our bus drivers to the camp staff and volunteers or employees at each of our venues the common refrain was how polite and well behaved our students are.

I must also publicly thank Mrs Bath, Mr Gibbs, Mrs Moss, Mrs Geyer, Mr Di Fede, Ms Rey, Ms Moore, Mrs Lingard, Mrs Beever, Miss Maddern and Mrs Hodder who travelled to Canberra to facilitate this camp. With over 100 students to care for they had plenty to do and were always on duty. I have no doubt that the success of the camp was in no small part due to their professionalism, commitment and caring approach with our students.

We would also like to thank the Australian Government for their contribution in supporting this programme through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER). This provides a subsidy for each student to part fund our trip to the National Capital.

Finally I would like to thank Mrs Peter and Mrs Burge for stepping in to run Junior School Assembly and assist in running the Headmaster’s Tour Morning in my absence. It is good to know we have such talented and reliable staff who can and will step in when needed.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP

www.girton.vic.edu.au

On Monday 7th March we all (year 6) boarded a bus for the long, exhausting bus trip. After nine hours and a few breaks we arrived at the Bush Capital Lodge and to be honest the bus trip wasn’t so bad. We all got our suit cases and went inside to discuss who we were in a room with for the next three days. In my room I had Vivienne, Rosie, Ebony, Lily B, Kendall, Chloe C and Zoe. We all unpacked and got ready for the Mt Ainslie lookout. It was absolutely beautiful and the lookout showed the best view of Parliament House. Then after about an hour we went back to the lodge and went to bed.

The next day we got woken to Mrs Moss screaming “Get up!” So we got up and got ready for the AIS. The AIS was huge! The first thing we did was go to the sportex section where they had interactive sport simulators. I went on the rowing simulator, the skateboard simulator, the cricket simulator, the football simulator and the soccer penalty simulator. After about 20 minutes we went outside to play some different sports (well, some were obscure) like European handball, Extreme Frisbee and non-obscure soccer. Then we had lunch and I went to the gift shop and got a souvenir coin.

We then went to Parliament House. Our group sat in the Senate.

Afterwards we all met up at the top of Parliament House. It had the most beautiful view. We then went back to the lodge and got ready for bowling. I was in a lane with Vivienne, Rosie, Ebony, Joanna, Chloe C and Zoe. In the end Vivienne won and we all went back to the lodge.

On Wednesday morning we had the Mrs Moss alarm again. We then went to old Parliament House. We had to wear these special gloves or what I like to call them Michael Jackson gloves. We did an information activity, it was so fun! Then we boarded a bus to the Royal Australian Mint. There was so much money. Soon after the tour we went to the Deep Space Centre. Xavier looked so excited I wondered if he would go off like a rocket. We had a challenge to find the first woman in space. Although the place was small trying to find the name was tricky. In the end someone got it right and got a NASA sticker. The lady then told us to sit in the theatre (which was actually rows of chairs and a huge interactive whiteboard) to watch a slide show about light and different lights like ultra violet. Then we went outside to get a photo (leaving Mrs Bath out the first time, hahahaha).

YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP

www.girton.vic.edu.au

Then the moment I have been waiting for… we were going to Questacon!!! It was awesome, there was an earthquake simulator that set your teeth on edge, a lightning show that left you shocked and a slide so high it gave you vertigo! At the gift shop I bought a magic slinky and a Questacon pen. After having the best time we went back to the lodge and went to bed.

On Thursday morning I was prepared for the Mrs Moss alarm but at her usual time she didn’t come so I dozed off back to sleep. Five minutes later when I started to wake up “Wake up!” I thought it was my dream but it was the Mrs Moss alarm. This morning we went to the War Memorial. Our tour started off with the Laying of the Wreath service. The service was so calm and peaceful. We then went to the discovery zone where we went into a helicopter used in WWII and a submarine used in the Cold war. In the submarine we all pretended that we were under attack and we had to get away. In the telescopes they had film that showed enemy ships.

About half an hour later we went back to the lodge and got ready for a bike ride. At first I fell over (I’m no Lance Armstrong) but after a bike change I was up and going again. And no one fell in the lake! We had to do one lap of the lake.

I finished the ride and really felt like that ice cream we were going to get. I got crème caramel flavoured, yum! We finished our ice-creams and got back to the lodge half an hour before the other group.

So in that time we packed our bags and got ready for red faces (or Year 6 has got talent). My cabin sang a little bit of ‘summer loving’ from Grease. Another cabin full of boys did teacher impersonations and yes Mrs Moss was impersonated as the

Mrs Moss alarm. Then we watched Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory (the one with Gene Wilder in it) the movie was great, we then went to bed for the last time at the lodge.

Finally the last time I was going to hear the Mrs Moss alarm so I braced myself I put my hands over my ear but it was Miss Maddern who woke us up ( she is a lot quieter than Mrs Moss). So we got up gave our suit cases to Mr D (who struggled with my suitcase).

We then got on the bus and said our good bye to Canberra. Then I braced myself for the nine hour journey home.

WOOD WORKING ACTIVITY

www.girton.vic.edu.au

FOR YEAR FIVE AND SIX STUDENTS:

There is an amazing new Junior School activity beginning in Term Two, for students in Year Five and Six. With the assistance of Mr Smith and the new work space at the ‘Old Girton Hotel’, boys and girls will have the opportunity to learn some woodworking skills. Mr Smith has set up an awesome space with benches that will allow up to 20 students to enjoy this hands on club. The children will work towards completing their own project.

This is a brand new club and we are looking for volunteers that would like to help during lunch times on a Friday from 12:15pm to 1:00pm. We are hoping there may be a retired handyman/builder or parents or grandparents with some spare time!

Please let me know if you would like to be involved in this exciting initiative. My email is [email protected]

We are excited about the possibilities!

MIt’s almost that time of year again when Girton’s Tournament of Minds (TOM) teams will be starting auditions, and we’re always on the lookout for new members.

TOM is open to both Junior students in Years 4-6 and Senior students in Years 7-10. Teams of 7 compete in one of four areas: Applied Technology, Language Literature, Social Sciences and Maths Engineering. They prepare and perform their solutions for both a long-term problem (6 weeks’ preparation) and spontaneous problem (a matter of minutes).

The name ‘Tournament of Minds’ might give the impression that TOM is for highly academic students with an interest in maths and science, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. TOM is all about imagination, teamwork and performing. If you’re a confident performer, good at working in groups or enjoy solving problems with creative thinking, we want you!

Applications are open from Week 1 to Week 3 of Term 2 (Monday April 11th - Monday April 25th). Auditions will then run during Weeks 3, 4 and 5 on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30. These tryouts are easy to get involved in and lots of fun, so come along even if you’re not sure and you might surprise yourself!

Girton teams are often very successful in Tournament of Minds, with some groups even winning at the highest level in recent years. The journey from Regionals to States to Nationals is unforgettable no matter how far you go and you’ll forge plenty of new friendships along the way.

A TOUCH OF JAPAN IN BENDIGO

Japanese students and teachers from Gojo Senior High School in Nara, Japan, spent a week visiting Bendigo and beyond, as part of a student exchange program run by Girton Grammar School.

The Japanese students attended classes at Girton Grammar and stayed with host families as well as visiting a number of tourist attractions in Bendigo, the region and in Melbourne.

Girton Grammar established a sister school relationship with Gojo Senior High in 1992, making the exchange programs one of the longest running in Regional Victoria.

Gojo has been sending a group of 10-20 students to Bendigo every March over the past 23 years. In return, Girton students studying Japanese take part in a trip to Japan during the September-October holidays every second year and more recently, also during the Summer holidays. Students visit places like Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima and have an opportunity to attend Gojo High School and experience homestay in Japan.

Headmaster of Girton Grammar School, Mr Matthew Maruff said that such visits provide great benefits to students.

“These trips not only by improve the learning of a second language but foster a more open-minded attitude towards people of a very different culture.

“Over 23 years of student exchanges, the friendship between Girton and Gojo has continued to deepen and with the growing importance of Australia’s position on the Pacific Rim, this is an incredibly valuable experience for our students on many levels,” he said.

PROFESSOR MARC BRACKETT

When Professor Marc Brackett from Yale University’s Centre for Emotional Intelligence teamed up with American pop singer and songwriter, Lady Gaga, and surveyed 49,000 American high school students, they discovered that the most common words that students used to describe their emotions were “tired”, “bored” and “stressed”.

The survey explored how young people currently feel and how they want to feel in school, and the possible reasons for these emotions.

When Professor Brackett visited Girton Grammar last week, he decided to use the same survey to explore the same factors. He was thrilled but not surprised to find that Girton students described being “accepted”, “inspired” and “happy” as the top three feelings (in that order) associated with being at school.

Headmaster of Girton Grammar School, Mr Matthew Maruff, said that this was incredibly gratifying support for the RULER program that the school has been implementing though Yale University for the past 5 years.

“If ever there was validation that teaching our students to understand their emotions was

a positive thing to bring into the curriculum, this is it.

“It is particularly pleasing that being “accepted” is something that our students feel so strongly given this School’s approach to inclusive education.

“There is a cumulative benefit in the RULER approach that Professor Brackett is beginning to see very clearly in this school.

“For the first time, he sought feedback on his program from our students to help refine his work which he applies all over the world, such is the depth of implementation of the program at this school,” Mr Maruff said.

Professor Brackett spent time in the Junior School refreshing staff on the RULER approach, especially the “anchors”. He believes that the program is now well enough embedded in the school to start differentiating the approach between year levels and work has commenced on this more sophisticated and targeted approach.

The Senior School RULER team and Heads of House worked with Professor Brackett to identify strengths and areas for improvement as well as some new ideas for the Senior School, especially through “InspirED” - a partnership between Facebook

and the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence. InspirED is an online community designed by educators, teens, and experts in social and emotional learning (SEL) to help high school students and educators work together to create the best possible learning communities. Access to the community is strictly mediated by the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence and Girton Grammar is fortunate to have gained access to this dynamic community.

“Our Senior students revealed to Professor Brackett that they want the skills to navigate the major social issues that will face them as they approach adulthood.

“They want to put themselves in the strongest possible position to make the best decisions about the types of things that are often associated with impulsive actions, such as alcohol and drug use.

“The fact that these students are even seeking out the support now, that they will need in order to face these issues in the future is such a positive outcome, demonstrating emotional maturity that will help them on a daily basis at school and at home,” Mr Maruff said.

This venue demonstrates that Melbourne has “come of age” when an Australian designed and built theatre can be appreciated as one of the best of its kind in the world.

After lunch we were shown around the three theatres within the Arts Centre Theatres building. We could not go into the Hamer Hall as there was a concert on at the time. Mr Benrie Manchee, Lighting Operations Manager, led this tour. We went into the Playhouse

from the ground eliminating any noise caused by traffic, trams or thunderstorms. The wall panelling in the Elizabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of an instrument. The woodgrain design is part of the overall acoustic treatment. We visited the lighting and audio control rooms and the ABC radio control room. In this room one could “hear the silence”.

Theatres can be such architect’s follies, with poor sightlines, sound problems, etc. The MTC has avoided such pitfalls

We left the Southbank Theatre and walked next door to the Melbourne Recital Centre. These two buildings were both part of the same project and were opened together.

Mr Michael Pearce warmly greeted us and proceeded to show us the venue. We saw the two visible springs that isolate the venue

On Tuesday March 1st, Mr McMillan and Mr Davis accompanied 14 students to backstage tours of the MTC, Melbourne Recital Centre and The Arts Centre.

The tours began at the Melbourne Theatre Company. The Southbank Theatre opened in 2009 and contains two performance spaces: the 500-559 seat Sumner, and the 150 seat Lawler. The walls of the Sumner are perforated with lettering which are lines from Australian plays.

We were met by Mr Kerry Saxby, The Technical Manager. Mr Saxby was part of the design team and explained how they had set out to remove all hindrances that may impact on the Set and Lighting designers. The entire stage is made from 43 rectangular panels that can be removed to accommodate traps, lifts or other custom structures. The proscenium arch is adjustable and can be set from 11 metres to 16 metres wide and from 0 metres to 9 metres high.

Mr Saxby showed us the side lighting positions, one of the lighting bridges and a patch bay. There is an autograph wall just like the one in the Capital.

This is a delightful venue decorated in shades of grey. The acoustics favour the spoken word, as it should in a drama theatre.

first. Mr Manchee spoke about this venue and how it is the more traditional of the three venues. Next we went into the Studio. Mr Manchee showed us the extent of the lighting and how they were all in use as part of the production.

This was followed by a walk through backstage areas and into the auditorium of the State Theatre. This is a large auditorium. Mr Davis pointed out the location of the Lighting Control Room and where he used to sit when he was the lighting operator there.

We then went onto the stage. There was maintenance taking place and we could not walk onto the stage. We did stay in the wings and Mr Manchee spoke about this venue. The stage is on level 2 of the building and the stage grid is at level 10. The StKilda road entrance is level 6. We then had a demonstration of the lift used to bring a truck or semi trailer down to the stage from the Level 5 Sturt Street loading bay. This lift is air craft carrier technology, an hydraulic scissor lift capable of a 25 tonne load. The final part of the tour was the follow spot room. To get there we exited the building and walked around to the balcony just above StKilda Road and into a side door. There is an entry room with a kitchen and toilet on one side and the follow spot room in the other.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP PARENT ADVISORY GROUP

The Digital Citizenship Parent Advisory Group hosted a successful parent education and information session On Tuesday March 8. Current parent Mr David Ashman discussed ways of controlling internet content at home. Ms Amanda Lilburne then demonstrated the Honeycomb ePlanner and discussed the Flip the Classroom model of learning. After a minor technical glitch, Lachlan Trounson (10 Riley) and Lincoln Coad (10 Jones), both from the student Co-Curricular activity GirtOnline, then demonstrated the various ways iPads are used at Girton. This was followed by over half an hour of questions from the audience. It was great to see parents, students and staff interacting and learning together in this way. I would like to thank the current members of the Parent Advisory Group, our speakers, as well as Mr Trevor Parry and Leo Hams (8 Jones) for their assistance on the night. EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES 2016

Our School’s Pastoral Care system includes my specialised services which include consultancy, counselling and educational assessments for students of all ages in both Junior and Senior School.

The consultancy services involve regular meetings with the Pastoral Care team throughout the School. Staff present student issues for discussion and support plans are made collaboratively.

Counselling Services may be initiated by parents or staff. This generally involves matters which are complex, and possibly requiring Mental Health Care Plans from General Practitioners. Such issues may include stress management, separation, anxiety, depression and grief.

Educational Psychology assessment work may also be initiated by parents, but may also occur following teacher concerns being expressed to their Head of House, LRC staff or following consultation with myself. Early identification of Specific Learning Difficulties can do much to address student skill levels and to assist them achieving their potential.

Should you require further information or support for any aspect of your child’s social or emotional development, learning or behavioural difficulties, please email me directly on [email protected] or on 0419108460.

Lachlan Moran who competed in the Australian Clay Target Association Victorian State Titles for Sporting Clays held at the Woodvale Club. Lachlan normally competes as a Sub Junior (U15’s) but on this occasion he competed against adults in “C” grade. It was a 100 target competition and at the end of the competition Lachlan was placed equal 1st, in “C” Grade. A shoot off for 1st place between Lachlan and an adult ensued and after a tie in the first round with both competitors missing only one target out of ten a second shoot off was called by the referees. Lachlan missed only one target in the second round with his opponent missing three and he won the event.

Evelyn Crawford (9Je) who recently participated in the Pony Club of Victoria State Show Jumping championships. This is a team event with each team comprising the best four members in their zone at a given grade. Evelyn’s team, representing Central Zone, achieved third place in the C grade show jumping.

Jacob McKenzie (7M) who has been accepted for the Children’s Chorus in the Australian Opera Production of La Boheme.

Girton Bulls U16 Boys and Girton Aces U16 Boys Basketball team who will be playing in a Grand Final today.

Amber Lyons (8Je) (pictured above) who competed in six state titles in track cycling over the summer and achieved one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Her results have placed her in a position where she was selected in a team of four Victorian under 15 girls who will

travel to the national titles in Tasmania (amongst about 20 riders from Victoria).

Emma Purcell (9Jo) (pictured above) who has recently been selected to represent Bendigo in the Under 16 Rep Squad for soccer. Also Emma competed in the

Grace Phillips (12M) (pictured) and Oliver Northam (12A) who performed for the afternoon at the “High Tea at the Shamrock Hotel”, a fundraiser for Weekend to End Women’s Cancer, benefitting Peter MacCullum Institute. They represented themselves and the school with dignity and talent.

Tully Scanlon (10Je) (pictured) who has been selected in the Victorian state junior and youth boxing team to go to the 2016 national titles in Qld in May.

Tully has proven himself in competition both in Victoria and interstate over the last twelve months culminating in his team selection after the recent Victorian team selection trials. He had his first state team training information session and sparring on Saturday .

He is enjoying the extra time and focus that the Girton elite sports programme has given him, and hopes this combined with his gruelling training regime can carry him to a gold medal in May , one better than his silver medal in the 2015 national titles.

Years 9/10 tennis players competed against seven other Bendigo schools in the Kel Pell (9/10 boys) and Molly Sandner (9/10 girls) cups. The Molly Sandner Cup is the longest running interschool girls competition in the Southern Hemisphere in any sport. Our girls were undefeated for the day, and after a seven year absence have finally returned the trophy to the Girton Gymnasium trophy cabinet. The girls’ final match was against CCB who at that stage were also undefeated. At one set apiece and the deciding set tied at deuce at 4-all when ‘time’ was called, the competition was decided by the next two points—which Girton won! The boys also did themselves proud, winning five of their seven matches and placing third of eight competing schools.

Alexander O’Shea (11A) who has been selected as an emergency member of the Australian Science Olympiad team following the Earth and Environmental Science Summer School.

Alexander said: “The whole school was a high intensity two week program where we learnt the equivalent of a first year university course in earth and environmental science. Essentially we covered the geosphere, hydrosphere and celestial sphere. We also had practical excursions and field work based on the theory we learnt. It was a fantastic experience and despite all the hard work I will never forget it.”
