January 2011 Cat Chat -...

Going into 2011 we would like to thank all of you for supporting our program and believing in our mission to help the homeless cats in Berks County. Among our many accomplishments In 2010, we proudly opened our third adoption center at the Exeter Petco. Also in the past year, we were able to reach out to other vari- ous rescue groups and partner with the Humane League of Lancaster, Huntington and Berks County Humane Societies, Animal Rescue League and additional out of state organizations. 2010 has proved to be our most fulfilling year yet. As our President Linda Rosencrans states “ It is a rewarding experience to know a cat is now safe and healthy due to something you had a part in. We know we cannot save then all, which we never like to admit, but the ones we save are in deed ap- preciative for it, no matter where or how they came to us. The main thing is, they are free from harm and living a happy life thanks to our volunteers tireless work and dedication.” We move forward into 2011 geared with the same ambition we have had in the past and equipped to take on as much as our team can handle. We continue to strive day in and day out to make a difference. Because of your sup- port our vision becomes reality and we can’t thank you enough for allowing us to continue in our mission! The Volunteers of 1X1

Page 2 Cat Chat

Our volunteers make One by One what it is. They are a wonderful group of car-

ing, compassionate individuals who truly devote their time and energy to our pro-

gram. At any moment, they step up to the plate time and time again to care for

these homeless pets. They work hours at events, clean and feed at our adoption

centers, open their home to those unwanted. They go beyond all means to make

sure that each and every cat gets the time and attention they deserve. They are

amazing!

How is their thanks shown? Each and every time a cat is adopted, that’s how.

Every time they’ve taken one off the street, out of a shelter, each life they have

struggled to save. The moment that cat is adopted is the most rewarding feeling

a volunteer will ever feel. That is, until the day a letter arrives, an update, a

picture of them in their happy home. It is then, that they feel complete and their

heart can rest.

One by One thanks each and every one of their volunteers for what they do every

day to help this program. No matter what small role you play everyone is impor-

tant to what we do and how many lives we save. From the bottom of our hearts

we THANK YOU!!

Valuable is the work you do

Outstanding is how you always come through

Loyal, sincere and full of good cheer

Untiring in your efforts throughout the year

Notable are the contributions you make

Trustworthy in every project you take

Eager to reach your every goal

Effective in the way you fulfill your role

Reading with a smile like a shining star

Special and wonderful – that’s what you are!

Tender Hearts by Dee Clair

Page 3 Volume 1, Issue 4

I greet each day inside my cage

And wait for God to write my page

I wonder if you’ll come today?

And let me feel the light of day

My whole life has been dark with pain

And those who caused it

What did they gain?

They stole my trust, my livelihood

And all because they simply could

I yearn to run through scented fields

Without a cage and lock to yield

To chase a squirrel that can’t be caught

To earn a love that can’t be bought

But the darkest days have a light

In the quite mornings that follow night

You come to visit every day

Without a motive, without a pay

You carried me when I was weak

Brought trust I was too pained to seek

You healed my wounds that took their toll

You rescued my slowly dying soul

And now I listen for your voice

Knowing that you’re here by choice

You didn’t know me at the start

And yet I’m planted in you heart

I’m learning to accept your praise

And not avert my fearful gaze

Forgive me if I cower still

My life has been against my will

I feel that you are growing tired

Within this fight that you’ve been mired

If you can keep your doubts at bay

It would mean the world if you could stay

I can’t predict how this will end

But I know this of you , my friend

You selflessly all played your part

You saved me with your tender heart

What is the best part of being a 1X1 volunteer?

Seeing cats that are homeless get adopted

Seeing cats that are sick or abused get

well or learn to trust again.

Seeing cats get a second chance is the

most rewarding feeling.

Watching a kitty and his/her new family

fall in love!

How has a foster cat touched your life?

After 10 years of rescuing to find an ultimate

teacher of forgiveness. One of my fosters,

Mario faced the horrors at the hands of a

hoarder who lived in terrible living condi-

tions. Mario loves everyone, from dogs to cats

and especially people. Come to visit and

Mario will be the first to greet you. Once you

pick him up he wraps his arms around you for

a hug. Does he know you...no! Is that forgive-

ness or what? He was left without a single

scar. Foster? Not no more, he was not leaving

my house...and my heart!

What 1X1 volunteer you know goes over and

beyond?

Shelley N. for starting a low cost spay/neuter

clinic in Berks!

Linda R—for all her fundraising efforts!

Kathy W - for starting our Petsmart adoption

centers!

To name a few… There are too many to list!!

Think your seeing double?

You are! These two precious brothers are

up for adoption at our Temple Petsmart!

We are gearing up and getting prepared and ready for the

busy Spring months ahead and we need your help! The

more volunteers we have the more lives we can save.

If your thinking “I really want to help” but don’t have time?

No sweat, feeding the cats at one of our adoption centers

takes one hour a shift. One shift a month is a big help in

our books!!

Okay so you think you have no skills?

Well, you have a smile on your face don’t you? So put it to

work by greeting people and handing out information at

one of our events!

I want to help but am afraid to get too attached to the cats?

We have plenty of opportunities available none cat related.

So what’s holding you back? Let us know and we can find

the right opportunity for you!
